4 BEFORE YOU BEGIN Thank you for selecting the new PROFORM ® 1280 S elliptical exerciser . The PROFORM ® 1280 S is an incredibly smooth exerciser that moves your feet in a natural elliptical path, minimizing the impact on your knees and ankles.
5 ASSEMBL Y Assembly requires two persons. Place all parts of the elliptical exerciser in a cleared area and remove the packing materials. Do not dispose of the packing materials until assembly is completed. In addition to the included allen wrenches, assembly requires a phillips screwdriver , an adjustable wrench , and a rubber mallet .
6 2. Move and lift the left Flex Bar (14) out of the way and slide the Left Stabilizer Cover (31) onto the Front Stabilizer (3). Slide the Right Stabilizer Cover (1 16) onto the Front Stabilizer in the same way .
7 133 58 137 67 58 123 67 5. Identify the Incline Axle (137), which is the longest remaining axle. Slide an M6 W asher (58) onto an M6 x 18mm Patch Screw (67). T ighten the Patch Screw into one end of the Incline Axle. Apply a small amount of grease to the Incline Axle.
8 8 8. Apply a generous amount of grease to the Pivot Axle (108) and to the two M8.5 Small W ashers (53). Insert the Pivot Axle into the Upright (2) and center it. Reapply grease to both sides of the Pivot Axle. Identify the Left and Right Handlebars (9, 10), which are marked with stickers.
9 12. See step 13. Remov e th e si x M4 x 16mm Screws ( 66) and the Left and Right Handlebar Covers (109, 1 10) from the Console (5). Attach the CD Holder (1 14) to the Console (5) with two M4 x 12mm Round Head Screws (18) as shown.
10 14. Plug the Power Cord (96) into the Power Socket (140) at the rear of the elliptical exerciser . 15. Make sure that all parts of the elliptical exerciser are properly tightened. Note: Some hardware may be left over after assembly is completed. T o protect the floor or carpet from damage, place a mat under the ellip- tical exerciser .
1 1 HOW T O USE THE ELLIPTICAL EXERCISER HOW TO PLUG IN THE POWER CORD This product must be grounded. If it should malfunction or break down, grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. This product is equipped with a cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug.
12 FEA TURES OF THE CONSOLE The advanced console offers a selection of features designed to make your workouts more enjoyable and effective. When the manual mode of the console is selected, the resistance of the pedals and the angle of the ramp can be changed with the touch of a button.

14 The small display will show your pedaling pace (in revolutions per minute). The indicator bar in the small display will increase or decrease in length as you increase or decrease your pedaling pace. Note: When you use a Heart Rate program, the small display will show your heart rate instead of your pedaling pace.
15 Each Smart program will automatically change the resistance of the pedals and prompt you to increase or decrease your pace as it guides you through an effec- tiv e wor ko ut . Programs 3, 4, and 5 are weight loss pro- grams; programs 6, 7, 8, and 9 are aerobic programs; and programs 10, 1 1, and 12 are high-performance programs.
16 Heart Rate program 1 is designed to keep your heart rate between 65% and 85% of your maximum heart rate during your workout. (Y our m axim um heart rate is estimated by subtracting your age from 220. For example, if you are 25 years old, your maximum heart rate is 195 beats per minute.
17 The program will continue in this way until the large display shows that no time remains in the program. Note: If you stop pedaling for a few sec - onds, the program will end. T o use the program again, reselect it and start it at the beginning. Follow your progress with the large display .
18 HOW T O USE IFIT .COM CD PROGRAMS When you use an iFIT .com CD program, a certified personal trainer will guide you through your workout while the program interactively controls the resistance of the pedals and prompts you to increase or decrease your pace.
19 HOW TO CONNECT THE ELLIPTICAL EXERCISER TO YOUR VCR OR COMPUTER HOW TO CONNECT T O YOUR VCR Note: If your VCR has an unused AUDIO OUT jack, see instruction A below . If the AUDIO OUT jack is being used, see instruction B. If you have a TV with a built-in VCR, see instruction B.
20 HOW T O USE IFIT .COM VIDEO PROGRAMS T o use iFIT .com videocassettes, the elliptical exerciser must be connected to your VCR. See H OW TO CON- NECT TO YOUR VC R on page 19. T o purchase iFIT .com videocassettes, call toll-free 1-888-533- 1333. Follow the steps below to use an iFIT .
21 Our Web site at www .iFIT .com allows you to play iFIT .com programs directly from the internet. T o use programs from our Web site, the elliptical exerciser must be connected to your computer . See HOW TO CONNECT TO YOUR COMPUTER on page 19. In addition, you must have an internet connection and an internet service provider .
22 Inspect and properly tighten all parts of the elliptical exerciser regularly . Replace any worn parts immedi- ately . For smooth operation of the elliptical exer- ciser , inspect and clean the ramp regularly using a soft cloth and mild detergent. Other parts of the elliptical exerciser can also be cleaned in this way .
23 CONDITIONING GUIDELINES The following guidelines will help you to plan your exercise program. Remember that proper nutrition and adequate rest are essential for successful results.
