T o install batteries (or r eplace them if the “Low Battery” symbol appears on display), pr oceed as follows: 1. Remove battery compartment cover by gently pushing down on arr ow and sliding cover forward.
Using the corr ect cuff size is impor tant for an accurate r eading. A cuff that is too lar ge will pr oduce a r eading that is lower than the corr ect blood pr essur e; a cuf f that is too small yields a measur ement that is higher .
T AKING YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE T ips for Blood Pr essur e Monitoring: ☞ Relax for about 5 to 10 minutes befor e measur ement. ☞ Remove constricting clothing and place cuff on bar e arm. ☞ Unless your physician r ecommends otherwise, use left arm to measur e pr essur e.
☞ IMPORT ANT : Measure pressure at the same time each day . 4. Pr ess the POWER button. 5. W atch for all display symbols to appear briefly , followed by a zer o, indicating that monitor is r eady for measur ement.
7. Sit quietly during measur ement. Pr essur e values ar e displayed at left, then right, along with ❤ symbol blinks and beeps with pulse beat. NOTE: If you wish to stop inflation at any time, press the exhaust valve to release air . 8. W ait for the long beep, indicating that the measurement is complete.
10. Remove cuff and make a note of your blood pr essur e and pulse rate on the chart (see page 16), indicating date and time of measur ement. W e advise that you r ecor d the date and time after each measur e- ment because an accurate blood pr essur e history r elies not on single or sporadic r eadings but on a pattern over time.
CHECK/ADJUST EXHAUST VELOCITY Exhaust velocity is the rate at which the air pr essur e in the cuf f deflates during the course of measur ement. It is pr eset at the factory and generally does not need any further adjustment. NOTE: The exhaust rate of your monitor was preset and tested at the factory to ensure proper measurement.
4. W atch the display screen. As pr essure automatically decr eases, diastolic numbers should decline in incr ements of 2 to 5 mmHg. If the exhaust velocity range is not within 2 to 5 mmHg, make the following adjustment with the unit turned off: 1. The adjustment scr ew is located on the exhaust valve attached to the inflator bulb.
What Is Blood Pressure? Blood pr essur e is the for ce exerted by blood against the walls of the arteries. Systolic pr essure occurs when the hear t contracts; diastolic pr essur e occurs when the hear t expands. Blood pr essur e is measur ed in millimeters of mer cury (mmHg).
Assessing High Blood Pressure The following standar ds for assessing high blood pr essur e (without r egar d to age) have been established by the National Institutes of Health JNCVI.
Why Measure Blood Pressure at Home? It is now well known that, for many individuals, blood pr essur e r eadings taken in a doctor’ s office or hospital setting might be elevated as a r esult of appr ehension and anxiety . This r esponse is commonly called “white coat hypertension.
