4 BEFORE YOU BEGIN Thank you for selecting the new PROFORM ® 1280 S e lliptical exerciser . The PROFORM 1280 S elliptical exerciser is an incredibly smooth exerciser that moves your feet in a natural elliptical path, minimizing the impact on your knees and ankles.
5 ASSEMBL Y T o hire an authorized service technician to assemble the elliptical exerciser , call toll-free 1-800-445-2480. A ssembly requires two persons. P lace all parts of the elliptical exerciser in a cleared area and remove the packing materials.
6 2. Move and lift the left Flex Bar (14) out of the way and slide the Left Stabilizer Cover (31) onto the Front Stabilizer (3). Slide the Right Stabilizer Cover (1 16) onto the Front Stabilizer in the same way .
7 133 58 137 67 58 123 67 5. Identify the Incline Axle (137), which is the longest remaining axle. Slide an M6 W asher (58) onto an M6 x 18mm Button Screw (67). T ighten the Button Screw into one end of the Incline Axle. Apply a small amount of grease to the Incline Axle.
8 8 8. Apply a generous amount of grease to the Pivot Axle (108) and to the two M8.5 W ashers (53). Insert the Pivot Axle into the Upright (2) and center it. Reapply grease to both sides of the Pivot Axle. Identify the Left and Right Handlebars (9, 10), which are marked with stickers.
9 12. See step 13. Remov e the six M4 x 16mm Screws (66) and the Left and Right Handlebar Covers (109, 1 10) from the Console (5). Attach the CD Holder (1 14) to the Console (5) with two M4 x 12mm Screws (84) as shown.
10 14. Plug the Power Cord (96) into the Power Socket (140) at the rear of the elliptical exerciser . 15. Make sure that all parts of the elliptical exerciser are properly tightened. Note: Some hardware may be left over after assembly is completed. T o protect the floor or carpet from damage, place a mat under the ellip- tical exerciser .
1 1 HOW T O USE THE ELLIPTICAL EXERCISER HOW TO PLUG IN THE POWER CORD This product must be grounded. If it should malfunction or break down, grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. This product is equipped with a cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug.
12 FEA TURES OF THE CONSOLE The advanced console offers a selection of features designed to make your workouts more enjoyable and effective. When the manual mode of the console is selected, the resistance of the pedals and the angle of the ramp can be changed with the touch of a button.

14 The small display will show your pedaling pace ( in revolutions per minute). The indicator bar i n the small display will increase or decrease in length as you increase or decrease your pedaling pace. Note: When you use a Heart Rate program, the small display will show your heart rate instead of your pedaling pace.
15 Each Smart program will automatically change the resistance of the pedals and prompt you to increase or decrease your pace as it guides you through an effec- tive workout. Follow the steps below to use a Smart program. T urn on the console. See step 1 on page 13.
16 Heart Rate program 1 is designed to keep your heart rate between 60% and 90% of your maximum heart rate during your workout. (Y our m axim um heart rate is estimated by subtracting your age from 220. For example, if you are 25 years old, your maximum heart rate is 195 beats per minute.
17 The program will continue in this way until the large display shows that no time remains in the p rogram. Note: If you stop pedaling for a few sec- onds, the program will end. T o use the program a gain, reselect it and start it at the beginning. Follow your progress with the large display .
18 A djust the volume if desired. T o adjust the vol- ume, press the V olume – and + buttons on the CD player . Follow your progress with the large display . See step 4 on page 13. Measure your heart rate if desired. See step 5 on page 14. T urn on the fan if desired.
19 HOW TO CONNECT T O YOUR COMPUTER N ote : If your computer has a 1/8” LINE OUT jack, see instruction A. If your computer has only a P HONES jack, see instruction B. A. Plug one end of a 1/8” to 1/8” stereo audio cable (available at electronics stores) into the jack beneath the console.
20 • Make sure that the audio cable is properly connected and that it is fully plugged in. T o stop the program at any time, stop pedaling a nd press the pause button on your VCR. T o restart the program, press the play butt on on you r VCR and begin pedaling.
21 THE OPTIONAL CHEST PULSE SENSOR T he optional chest pulse sensor pr ov ide s hands-free operation and continuously monitors your heart rate d uring your workouts. T o purchase the optional chest pulse sensor , cal l the toll-free telephone number on the front cover of this manual.
22 Inspect and properly tighten all parts of the elliptical e xer ciser regularly . Replace any worn parts immedi- ately . For smooth o peration of the elliptical exer- ciser , inspect and clean the ramp regularly using a soft cloth and mild detergent.
23 CONDITIONING GUIDELINES The following guidelines will help you to plan your exercise program. Remember that proper nutrition and adequate rest are essential for successful results.
