T o inst all the software: 1. S tart Microsoft Windows an d make sure that no other applications are running.
Installation 10 DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Guide 3. On the Main Menu, select Inst all Products . 4. Make sure the boxes for Nuance PaperPort ® and Scanner Driver are checked. 5. Click Inst all Now . The PaperPort inst allation begins: 1. The Select Language window opens.
DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Gui de 11 Installation 3. Read the PaperPort license agreemen t and select I accept the terms in this agreement , then click on Ne xt . If you choose not to accept the license agreement, the inst allation will terminate and the PaperPort sof tware will not be installed.
Installation 12 DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Guide 3. On the Xerox License Agreement windo w , read the license agreement. If you accept the terms, select I Agree . If you choose not to accept the license agreement, th e installation will terminate and the scanner driver will not be installed.
DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Gui de 13 Installation 6. Click Next . During inst allation you will see this window asking you to select one of the images for your Color S pace setting. The Color S pace setting sets the gamma value for the scanner so scanned items look good on your monitor .
Installation 14 DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Guide S tep 3: Connect the Power Supply Connect the power supply and power cord, and plug the power supply into an electrical outlet. T o connect the power supply: 1. Plug the power supply into it s power port on the scanner .
DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Gui de 15 Installation S tep 4: Connect the USB Cable and T urn on the Power The DocuMate 510 scanner con nects to any available USB port. Check your computer ’s manual for USB port location s. 1. Remove any protective t ape from the USB cable.

The Ready light comes on in dicating that the scanner is receiving power . If you are using Windows XP Service Pack 2, and have plugged the USB cable into a USB 1.

Y ou can use PhotoImpression to change a photo’ s brightne ss and contrast, sharpen the image, change its color tones, remove red-eye from pictures of faces, and crop and resize the image.

T o scan from the One T ouch Button Panel: 1. Load a stack of document s in the Automatic Document Feeder , or place a document face-down on the Flatb ed glass.

DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Gui de 39 Scanning T ext Document s Properties These properties apply to Microsof t Word, Microsof t Excel ® , and the other applications indicat ed by their icons in the list. The properties apply to the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) settings for the applications.

Click in the Color document handling settings b oxes for the options you want. The options will apply to all the applica tions in the group.

If a CD burner is attached to yo ur computer , and your computer is runnin g Windows XP or Windows Vista , you also use this dialog box to sta rt the Burn to CD process.

Choose the file size/image quality option for your scanned images. Minimize Size —Smallest file size, lowest image quality .

Scanning 48 DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Guide Scanning with Optical Ch aracter Recognition (OCR) Optical Character Recogn ition (OCR) converts text and n umbers on a scanned p age into editable text and numbers. Y ou can the n work with the text and numbers to edit, spellcheck, change font or type size, sort, calculate, and so forth.
DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Gui de 49 Scanning 4. Select the option you want for the OCR conversion of you r documents. Auto orient p age —Select this option to check the pa ge orientation and a utomatically rotate an improperly orient ed page ima ge so the text is recognizable by the OCR process.

DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Gui de 53 Scanning Creating a New Scan Configuration The scan configurations are where you select the scanning resolution, brightness, mode (color , black&white, or grayscale), and a number of other settings. Note the lock icon on th e preset configurations.
Scanning 54 DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Guide The Scan Configuration Pro perties dialog box opens. If the Scan Settings t ab is not selected, click it. 4. On the Scan Configuration Properties dialog box, type a name. 5. Select scan settings for the new scan configuration.

The Contrast setting does not apply to the Black&White mode. 6. If you want to lock the configuratio n, click the Key icon to change it from a Key to a Lock.
Scanning 56 DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Guide When using the AutoCrop to Original option with the Automatic Document Feeder , make sure to adjust the paper guide s on the scanner so the page is not skewed when it feeds int o the scanner . Skewed pages may no t crop properly .

For example, if you are scanning a lett er with a red watermark, you can choose to filter out the re d so the scanned letter just shows the text and not the red watermark.
Scanning 58 DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Guide The Device Settings T ab A Device Settings t ab appears on the Scan Configuration s dialog box when your selected Destination Application sends the scanned image to a printer , fax application, or other device.

Scanning 60 DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Guide Editing or Deleting Scan Configurations Editing and deleting is normally for t he configurations you create, not for your scanner ’s pre- set configurations. T o edit or delete a scan configuration: 1.

Scanning 62 DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Guide Configuring Before Scanning Choosing Configure Before Scan simply opens a scan ning interface when you click a button. Y ou can then use the interface to change the Resolution, Scan Mode, and other settings.

Click on the button you set to use the Configure Before Scan option. In the example shown on the previous p age, the scanning option 9 has been set to use Configure Before Scan.

DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Gui de 65 Scanning Scan and Burn to a CD If you have a CD burner att ached to your computer , you can scan directly from your scanner onto a CD. This feature is available only on computers running Windows XP or Windows V ista.

Scanning 68 DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Guide Scanning with Event Forwarding If you want to specify an applicati on to use for scanning at the st art of the process, you can use ev ent forwarding. The scann er will feed in the first p age, but will then stop until you select the application to use.

Scanning 70 DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Guide Creating an HTML Web Page from Y our Scanned Documents If you scan a document, whether a single p age or multiple pages, you can have the pa ges converted directly to HTML formatted pages for posting directly to your web site.

Scanning 72 DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Guide T ransferring Scanned Documents to S torage With the T ransfer to S torage scanning process, you can scan documents and save the m in a folder in one step. The process is ideal for archiving document s without having to manually save or process them in any other way .

T o help you remember which folder it is, give the new configuration a name that ind icates the folder name, such as “S torage for Business Receipts.

Scanning 78 DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Guide T o Use OCR Before T ransferring to Storage If the documents you want to transfer to storage are text documents or spreadshe ets, you ca n have them co nverted by the OCR process prior to being stored. 1.

Scanning 80 DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Guide 2. Click the Properties button. Y our scanner has a built-in power saving f eature that is set to power down after 15 minutes of idle time. Y ou can change the time before the scanner powers down, from 1 minute to a maximum of 10 hours.

The PaperPort application you receive d with your scanner uses the TW AIN interface for scanning.

Scanning with the TWAIN Interface from PaperP ort 86 DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Guide Scanning from the TW AIN Basic Interface The Basic Interface can sca n a preview of the image so you can adjust its ap pearance before scanning the final image. Af ter adjusting the appearance, you click the Scan bu tton on the Basic Interface to scan.
DocuMate 510 Scanner User’s Gui de 87 Scanning with the TWAIN Interface from PaperPo rt 6. Adjust the Brightness , Contra st , and Resolution until the picture is what you want. Y ou can also change the picture type again, for example, from color to grey scale.

Open the TW AIN Interface from PaperPort or other application that uses the TW AIN interface.
