DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 5 Installation S tep 1: Assemble the Scanner T o assemble the scanner: 1. Remove all shipping t ape from the top and bottom of the scanner . 2. Carefully remove the protective fo am from the ADF cover release, then press the release and open the Automatic Document Feeder cover .

If you choose not to accept the license agreement, th e installation will terminate and the scanner driver will not be installed.

Y ou can use the Xerox DocuMate 252 TW AIN driver to scan from TWAIN applications. Y ou will not be able to scan with the b uttons on the scanner .

Installation 14 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide S tep 4: Connect the USB Cable and T urn on the Power The DocuMate 252 scanner con nects to any availa ble USB port. Check your computer ’s manual for USB port location s. 1. Remove any protective t ape from the USB cable.

The status lig ht comes on and flashes indicating that the scanner is receiving power . If you are using Windows XP and have plugged the USB cab le into a USB 1.

Click OK . Y ou can also click More to see a quick overview about accessing and navigating the One T ouch Button Panel.

The OmniPage Pro User Guide opens for you to view and save to your computer . 12. When you are finished saving the OmniPage Pro User Guide, return to the Installation menu a nd click Exit .

Scanning 24 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide Scanning If you selected the recommended Full Inst all option (see page 10), then you have several dif ferent options to scan with your Xerox DocuMate 252 scanner . Each method scans equally well, so use the one with appropriate options f or the item you are scanning.
DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 25 Scanning Load and Scan Document s When you press either the Simplex or Duplex button, documents are scanned using the scan setting s indicated by the LED number . The scanned images are the n sent to a software ap plication (known as the Destination Application) on your computer .
Scanning 26 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide 3. Check the LED number to make sure you’re using the scan setting you want. T o choose a new scan setting, press the Destination Selector buttons. 4. T o scan a one-sided document, press the Si mplex button.

T o check the scan settings before scannin g, press, hold down, and then release, either the Simplex or Duplex button . The One T ouch Properties window opens for you to view and change the settings before scanning.

DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 31 Scanning The Default One T ouch Settings on Y our Scanner When you receive you r scanner , its settings are preconfigured to scan items for various basic tasks, such as email or fax, then send the scanned image to an appr opriate, preselected Destination Application.
Scanning 32 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide Configuring the One T ouch Buttons Each One T ouch button configuration consist s of a Destination Application , a Scan Configuration , and a Document Format . The One T ouch Properties window is where you select t hese three elements for a button.

Scanning 36 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide The scan configuration list is preset for the application you select in the Select Destination list. If you select a dif ferent application, the configurations are fo r that application. However , you can create your own scan configurations as well.
DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 37 Scanning Setting Destination Ap plication Properties The dif ferent types of Destination Applications have various properties that you can select. 1. On the One T ouch Properties window , click a Destination Application.

Click OK or Apply on the One T ouch Properties window . When PaperPort opens af ter you finish scanning, the thumbnails of your scanned document s are on the Desktop in that folder .

Scanning 40 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide Image Document s Properties These properties apply to OmniPage Pro that yo u received with your scanner , plus Microsoft Paint and other image processing applications. 1. Click in the Color document handling settings b oxes for the options you want.
DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 41 Scanning Storage Properties These properties apply to the De stination Application named T ransfer to S torage. If a CD burner is att ached to your compute r , you also use this dialog box to start the Burn to CD process.
Scanning 42 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide If you have a CD burner att ached to your computer , the option Show message when ready to burn 5" CD (700MB) , should also be selected so you will see a message when it’ s time to click the Burn to CD button.
DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 43 Scanning 3. If you need to change your email client, or any other internet options, click the Internet Options button. The Windows Internet Options Cont rol Panel opens. Click the Programs tab and choose a new em ail client from the Email list.

BMP and TIFF are standard image file formats generally used if you want to do additional image processing, such as photo touch-up or co lor correction.
DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 45 Scanning 3. Choose the file size/image quality option for your scanned images. Minimize Size —Smallest file size, lowest image quality . Normal —Medium file size, some loss of image quality . Maximum Quality —Largest file size, no loss of image quality .

Y our selection of a file type pert ains only to the button currently selected on the One T ouch Properties window .
DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 47 Scanning Searchable PDF —The .sPDF file format used by Adobe Acrobat and OmniPage Pro. This format conve rts scanned text into PDF with text search and OCR cap abilities. It is only available if you have instal led OmniPage Pro on your computer .
Scanning 48 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide Selecting Options for a Button The One T ouch Options determine the types of Destination Applications available for a button, as well as the location of the files of your scanned items. T o select options: 1.
DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 49 Scanning • Image Editors include Microsof t Paint and other drawing and graphics applications. • T ext Editors include Microsoft W ord and W ordPad, Microsoft Excel, and other word processing and spreadsheet applications.

DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 51 Scanning Creating a New Scan Configuration The scan configurations are where you select the scanning resolution, brightness, mode (color , black&white, or grayscale), and a number of other settings. Note the lock icon on th e preset configurations.
Scanning 52 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide 5. Select scan settings for the new scan configuration. Mode —Select a scanning mode: • Black&White to scan in black and white. For example, letters and memos are usua lly scanned in black and white.
DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 53 Scanning Drag the sliders to the right or lef t to adjust the brightness and contrast of the scanned image. The Contrast setting does not apply to the Black&White mode. 6. If you want to lock the config uration, click the key icon to change it from a key to a lock.
Scanning 54 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide • Straighte n Image —Select this option to let the scanner automatically determine if a p age is skewed, then straighten its ima ge. The scanner detects page edges and can sense when the p age is fed through at an a ngle.
DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 55 Scanning • Color Filter —Color filter is the ability of your scanner to automatically remove a color from a scanned ite m. For example, if you are scanning a lett er with a red watermark, you can choose to filter out the re d so the scanned letter just shows the text and not the red watermark.
Scanning 56 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide The Device Settings T ab A Device Settings t ab appears on the Scan Co nfigurations dialog box when your selected Destination Application sends the scanned image to a printer , fax application, or other device.

T o help you remember which folder it is, give the new configuration a name that ind icates the folder name, such as “S torage for Business Receipts.” 6. Click the Scan Settings , Page Settings , and Advanced Settings tabs, and select the settings you want.

DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 63 Scanning Configuring Before Scanning Choosing Configure Before Scan simply opens a scan ning interface when you press or click a scan button. Y ou can then use the interface to ch ange the Resolution, Scan Mode, and other settings.
Scanning 64 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide Scanning with Optical Ch aracter Recognition (OCR) Optical Character Recognitio n (OCR) is like a printer in reverse. Instead of printing what’ s on the screen onto p aper , OCR converts text and numbers on a scanned p age into edit able text and numbers.
DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 65 Scanning T o scan with OCR: 1. T o scan using the buttons on the scanner , press the Destination Selector until the LED is at 6, then press the Simplex or Duplex button.
Scanning 66 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide Selecting OmniPage OCR Options The OmniPage OCR Options are only ava ilable if you have installed OmniPage Pro on your computer . Scanning to PaperPort to use its OCR cap abilities does not of fer the options in this section.
DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 67 Scanning 6. Choose the options you wa nt from the OCR window . Languages in Document —Select the language(s) in the documents to be scann ed. These are the languages that will be recognized during the OCR process.
Scanning 68 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide Font Matching —Y our computer system usually has a number of fonts available for t he OCR pr ocess to use to recognize text. However , not all of the font s may be selected for the OCR process. Using Font Matching you can select the font s on your computer that match the font s in your document s.
DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 69 Scanning When bringing in a new image —Click the menu arrow and select where you want new pages adde d to your current document. The choices are Af ter last p age , Af ter current pag e , Before current p age , and Before first p age .
Scanning 70 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide 8. Click the Format tab and cho ose the options you want from the Format window . Note that as you select format s, the image changes to represent the selection so you can see, a t a glance, what the layout will look like.

Scanning 72 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide 2. Using the arrows, choose a One T ouch button to use for the sPDF or nPDF scanning. 3. Select a Destination Application that uses a text format as th e page format. 4. Right-click on the text format icon.

T o search for the text, open Adobe Acrob at Reader or Adobe Acrobat. 10. From the Adobe Acrobat File menu choose Open , and open the file you just scanned.
Scanning 74 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide 4. Select Burn to CD as the Destination Ap plication. The Burn to CD Destination Application is only available if yo u have a CD burner attached to your computer , but you do not need to have a CD in the burner t o select the destination.

Scanning 76 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide Scanning with Event Forwarding If you want to specify an applicati on to use for scanning at the st art of the process, you can use ev ent forwarding. The scann er will feed in the first p age, but will then stop until you select the application to use.

Scanning 78 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide Creating an HTML Web Page from Y our Scanned Document s If you scan a document, whether a single p age or multiple pages, you can have the pa ges converted directly to HTML formatted pages for posting directly to your web site.

Y ou may also want to write down the address shown in the Address bar to make sure you ’ll know where to find your new HTML page later on.
Scanning 80 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide T ransferring Scanned Documents to S torage With the T ransfer to S torage scanning process, you can scan documents and save the m in a folder in one step. The process is ideal for archiving document s without having to manually save or process them in any other way .
DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 81 Scanning T o T ransfer Documents to a Server or Mapped Drive When selecting the storage loca tion for scanned document s, you can select a local folder , or a folder on a server or mapped drive.Y ou select a mapped drive using the Browse button.
Scanning 82 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide T o Use OCR Before T ransferring to Storage If the documents you want to transfer to storage are text documents or spreadshe ets, you ca n have them converted by the OCR process prior to being stored. 1.
DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Gui de 83 Scanning Checking the Hardware and Se tting the Lamp Power Saving 1. Right-click on the One T ouch icon and choose Show Hardware from the pop-up menu. Y ou can also click the scanner icon at the top of the One T ouch Button Panel.
Scanning 84 DocuMate 252 Scanner User’s Guide 2. Click the Properties button. Y our scanner has a built-in power saving feature that is set to power down after 15 minutes of idle time. Y ou can change the time before the scanner powers down, from 1 minute to a maximum of 10 hours.

The options on the TW AIN interface are: • Mode —Select a scanning mode: Black&White to scan in black and white.

For example, a note written with a light pencil may need to be scanned darker to im prove legibility .
