5 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8900 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Installing This section of the guide contains instructions for connecting y our OneT ouch 8900 scanner to a USB port. The P aperP ort CD includes all the necessary installation files, as well as P aperP ort software files and other softwar e files.
STEP 2: C ONNECTING THE S CANNER 6 3. F ollow the instructions on the screen to install the P aperP or t software on y our computer . During installation, a message tells y ou to connect the scanner to the computer . 4. F ollow the steps in the next section to connect the scanner .
7 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8900 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE T o connect the OneT ouch 8900 scanner to a USB port: 1. Plug one end of the USB cable into an av ailable USB port. Some new er computers also have keyboar ds with USB ports. Y ou can plug the scanner into the keyboar d instead of the USB port on the computer .
STEP 2: C ONNECTING THE S CANNER 8 3. Plug the other end of the USB cable into the scanner ’ s USB port. If the plug does not attach easily , make sure that you are plugging it in correctly . Do not for ce the plug into the connection. 4. Plug the po wer adapter cable into the po wer jack on the back of the scanner .

Y our computer recogniz es that a scanner has been plugged into the USB port and automatically loads the appr opriate software fr om the CD to run the scanner .

If the scanner is properly connected, the scanner icon looks like the one in this figure.

17 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8900 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE C ONFIGURING THE S CANNER T o configure the scanner , you display the Confi guration dialog bo x and then select options for the scan buttons. Y ou display the Configuration dialog box from either the shortcut menu or the B utton P anel.
C ONFIGURING THE S CANNER 18 A BOUT THE C ONFIGURATION D IALOG B OX The Configuration dialog box sho ws the curr ent settings for each scanner button. The tabs across the top of the dialog bo x corr espond to the buttons. Clicking a tab sho ws the current settings for the corr esponding button on the scanner .
19 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8900 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Select Configuration —the list of the button ’ s scan configurations. The configuration settings include: color , black and white, or grayscale, resolution in dots per inch (dpi), page siz e, brightness, and contrast.
C ONFIGURING THE S CANNER 20 G ETTING H ELP Y ou can get help with the scanner ’ s features or any of the options on the Configuration dialog box using either of the follo wing methods: ■ When the Configuration dialog bo x is display ed, pr ess the F1 key on your keyboar d.
21 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8900 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. Click a selection in the S elect Configuration list to choose a new scan configuration for the selected scanner button. The configurations in the list ar e preset for the application y ou select in the application list.
C ONFIGURING THE S CANNER 22 A DJUSTING S CAN S ETTINGS AND P AGE S ETTINGS When scanning using a configuration that y ou created y ourself , you can adjust that configuration ’ s scan settings and page settings. F or example, if the scanned image is too dar k, you can adjust the brightness of the scan setting.
23 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8900 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. Click the Edit button. The dialog box appears for adjusting the scanning settings of the selected configuration. 4. Adjust the scan settings that y ou want. M ode —Select B lack/White to scan in black and white.
C ONFIGURING THE S CANNER 24 5. Click the P age Settings tab to adjust the scan page settings. P age Size —Choose a page siz e from the drop-down list. The outlines on the pictur e repr esent the various page siz es. Clicking one of those outlines also selects it as the page siz e for the scan.

If the B utton tab on the P references dialog bo x is not selected, click it. Sho w All Destinations —Clicking this option automatically selects all the destination applications categories.

S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 30 S CANNING AN I TEM WITH THE T WAIN B UTTON The following steps explain ho w to scan an item using the T wain button in the P aperP ort software. Y ou can scan many types of items, from small business cards to A4-siz ed pages.
31 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8900 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Y ou can now scan manually b y previewing the image and adjusting the scan settings to your liking, then click Scan or A utoScan .
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 32 T o scan manually: 1. On the Scan M anager , select a configuration for the scan. F or example, select Color/Custom to scan a color item with the preset C ustom scan settings. That configuration ’ s settings appear as a list.
33 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8900 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE T o scan automatically: 1. Click A utoScan . The scanner uses your pr eselected resolution setting for the configuration you selected. S ee “S etting P r eferences ” on page 48 to set the A utoScan settings.

T o adjust a setting: 1. Click a setting in the list of settings, or click its corr esponding button on the right side of the Scan M anager .
A DJUSTING THE S ETTINGS ON THE S CAN M ANAGER 36 S AVING A N EW P ROFILE If you adjust the scan settings y ou can save them as a pr ofile for later use. T o sav e a new pr ofile: 1. Select a configuration on the Scan M anager , such as Color/Custom.

43 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8900 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE A DJUSTING O UTPUT S IZE The item you ’ re scanning may not fill the scanner glass. I n that case y ou can preview the item and use the A uto T rim option to automatically eliminate the unwanted sections of the image.
A DJUSTING THE S ETTINGS ON THE S CAN M ANAGER 44 T o Auto T rim an item: 1. Click A uto T rim . 2. Click T rim . The scanner senses the edges of the item on the glass and draws a dotted line around the image in the windo w . Check to make sure the dotted line encloses the image that y ou want.
45 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8900 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. P ut the pointer on the image and drag the mouse to enclose the section you want in the scanned image. As you drag the mouse, a dotted bo x appears on the image and the size settings change to r eflect the new output size ar ea.
