W HAT ’ S IN THE B OX Before starting the assembly and installation, check the contents of the box to make sure that all par ts are included.

6 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Installing Installation is a quick, four-step process: 1. Assemble the scanner 2. Connect and power on the scanner 3. Install the software 4. Connect the USB cable to y our computer S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER All the components to assemble the scanner ar e included in the bo x.
S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER 7 2. S lide the locking tab on the bottom of the scanner to its unlocked position. 3. I nsert the slots (A) on the Paper Guide onto their tabs (B) on the scanner and slide the Guide down into place. The catch tabs (C) “ snap ” into place.
8 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 4. I nsert the Paper Guide Extension into the P aper Guide and “ snap ” its tabs into place. 5. I nsert the Paper S top onto the back of the scanner and slide it downward to “ snap ” its tabs into place.
S TEP 2: C ONNECT AND P OWER O N THE S CANNER 9 S TEP 2: C ONNECT AND P OWER O N THE S CANNER Before installing the software, connect the ADF cable, connect the scanner to a power source, and turn the power on. T o connect the scanner and tur n the power on: 1.

T urn on the power switch, located on the back of the scanner to the right of the power port. The status light comes on and fl ashes indicating that the scanner is receiving power .
S TEP 3: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 11 3. On the installation menu, select I nstall Products . The next installation screen appears. N ote : If the CD does not automatically star t, check the follo wing: ■ Make sure the CD drive ’ s door is completely shut.
12 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 4. Click in the box for ScanSoft P aperP or t and Scanner . If you want to also install the other softwar e, click their boxes as well. 5. Click Install N ow . 6. On the P aperP ort 9.0 W elcome window , click Next .
S TEP 3: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 13 12. On the Visioneer License Agreement window , read the license agreement. If you accept the terms, select I Agree , and click N ext . 13. On the Visioneer P roduct Registration window , complete the required information, and then click Register .
14 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE Y our Visioneer 9650 scanner connects to any av ailable USB port. Check your computer’ s manual for the USB por t locations. 1. Plug the USB cable into the USB por t on the scanner .
S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE 15 If the plug does not attach easily , make sure that you are plugging it in correctly . Do not force the plug into the connection. Y our computer recognizes that a scanner is plugged into the USB port and loads the appr opriate software to run the scanner .
16 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Scanning This section explains how to scan documents with y our Visioneer 9650 scanner . L OADING D OCUMENTS TO S CAN Y our scanner can scan a stack of documents or a single item. T o load a stack of documents in the A utomatic Document Feeder: 1.
L OADING D OCUMENTS TO S CAN 17 2. Load your stack of documents face up , with their tops into the Automatic Document F eeder . T o load a single item: 1. Place the item on the scanner glass, face do wn. 2. Align the item with the arrow on the reference frame.
18 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE S CANNING I TEMS Y ou can scan from the P aperP ort software or other TW AIN software. Y OUR S CANNER AND THE TWAIN S TANDARD Y our Visioneer 9650 USB scanner uses the TW AIN standard for scanning.

20 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. Click the Scan icon on the PaperP ort command bar . The F olders pane (which shows folders for organizing y our scanned images) is replaced by the Scan pane. 4. F rom the Scanner drop-down list, select your Visioneer 9650 V1.
S CANNING FROM W INDOWS 98SE, ME, 2000, OR XP 21 8. Click the Scan button at the bottom of the Scan pane. The Scan Manager opens. Use the Scan Manager to select scanning options and to star t the scanner . 9. F rom the Scan Method drop-down list, choose whether you are going to scan a single item ( Flatbed ) or a stack of items ( ADF ).
22 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 12. When you are satisfied with the previe w image, click Scan . If the Single page items check box is selected on the PaperP ort desktop, the item appears as a thumbnail on the desktop .
S CANNING FROM W INDOWS 98SE, ME, 2000, OR XP 23 T HE S INGLE P AGE I TEMS C HECK B OX The Single page items check box provides the option to add additional items to a scanning job and scan double-sided items. I f the check box is selected, scanned items immediately appear on the PaperP or t desktop.
24 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE A DJUSTING THE I MAGE WITH THE S CAN M ANAGER The Scan Manager has a wide variety of options to adjust y our scanned images. Using those options you can produce the best possible scan of your documents, color photos, magazine ar ticles, business cards, or any other items you scan.
A DJUSTING THE I MAGE WITH THE S CAN M ANAGER 25 ■ Black and White —scans in black and white. The scanning pixels are all the same size and are either black or white. Use this setting for letters, memos, pen and ink drawings and other black and white material.
26 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE B RIGHTNESS AND C ONTRAST Sometimes an item is scanned with the brightness and contrast set to be too light or too dark. For example, a note written with a light pencil may need to be scanned dar ker to improve legibility .
A DJUSTING THE I MAGE WITH THE S CAN M ANAGER 27 P REVIEW A UTO -A REA The item you ’ re scanning may not fill the scanner glass. In that case y ou can preview the item and use the Preview Auto-Area button to automatically set the size of the scanned image.
28 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE M ANUALLY S ETTING THE S CAN A REA Y ou can manually adjust the output ar ea to scan specific sections of an image. F or example, if you ’ re scanning a photograph and want to focus on one section, manually setting the output siz e removes the rest of the photograph from the final scanned image.

Y ou can set the area by typing numbers into those boxes.
30 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE R EVERSING THE I MAGE The Scan Manager has an Invert button and a Mirror button for reversing the scanned image. Invert reverses the black and whites or the colors of an image. Mirroring flips the image 180 degrees.
A DJUSTING THE I MAGE WITH THE S CAN M ANAGER 31 A DJUSTING C OLOR AND G RAY I MAGES The Scan Manager has three buttons—Descreen, Sharpen, and Auto Level—for quickly adjusting color and gray images. These buttons do not apply to black and white or halftone images.
32 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE T o descreen an image: 1. Click the Descreen button. 2. Choose the appropriate option from the Descreen pop-up menu. W atch the preview image as y ou select various options to see which one is best for your final scanned image.
A DJUSTING THE I MAGE WITH THE S CAN M ANAGER 33 A UTO L EVEL Y our scanner can analyze a color image to automatically determine the best settings to match the colors of the original image. Click this button to let the scanner automatically adjust the color settings.
34 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE H IGHLIGHT /S HADOW L EVELS Images have light and dark areas. The highlight is the lightest spot on an image; shadow is the darkest spot. The range of colors between the highlight and shadow determines the range of colors of the image.
A DJUSTING THE I MAGE WITH THE S CAN M ANAGER 35 3. Enter new settings in the boxes for the three levels, or drag the small triangles at the bottom of the histogram. As you change the settings, the histogram changes to r eflect the ne w levels. 4. Click P review to see the effect of the ne w settings on the previe w image.
36 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 2. F rom the Channel drop-down menu, choose RGB to adjust the gamma of all the channels together, or choose a single channel if available. 3. Drag the line up or down to set a new gamma. The input and output values represent values on the horiz ontal and vertical axes for the ne w gamma setting.

S CANNING FROM W INDOWS ME OR XP 39 4. F rom the Scanner drop-down list, select Visioneer 9650 V1.10 . 5. I n the “Scan what?” section, choose to scan a Document or Photograph . 6. Click Settings to view and change the format for the scanned item’ s file name and the file type.

S CANNING FROM W INDOWS ME OR XP 41 F INE T UNING Y OUR S CANS Y ou can select ne w settings before you scan an item to fi ne tune exactly how you want to scan a par ticular item. T o select the scanner settings befor e y ou scan: 1. On the scan window , click Adjust the quality of the scanned picture .
42 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Brightness and Contrast —Drag the sliders to the right or left to adjust the brightness and contrast of the scanned image. The Contrast setting does not apply to the setting Black and White picture or text .
C LEARING P APER J AMS 43 Maintenance This section contains information on maintenance activities, troubleshooting, uninstalling, technical suppor t, and scanner specifications. C LEARING P APER J AMS If your scanner stops scanning due to a paper jam in the Automatic Document F eeder , a warning dialog bo x appears after a fe w moments.
44 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 2. Remo ve the jammed paper and close the co ver . T o reduce the number of paper jams, smooth and straighten paper before scanning, adjust the guides to the paper siz e, and inser t the paper evenly into the ADF .
C ARE AND M AINTENANCE 45 T o clean the ADF: 1. W et a cotton swab with some isopr opyl alcohol (95%). 2. Open the ADF cover . 3. Wipe the feed roller from side to side. Rotate the roller to clean its entire surface. 4. Wipe the pad from top to bottom.
46 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE T o replace the ADF P ad assembly: 1. Open the ADF cover . 2. S queeze the plastic clamps that hold the pad assembly in place and lift the pad up and out 3. Reverse the procedure to replace the new pad into its slots.
T ROUBLESHOOTING 47 T ROUBLESHOOTING In addition to the troubleshooting information contained in this section, please see the Readme fi le in the P aperP or t directory on your computer’ s hard drive. The Readme file contains additional information that may help you diagnose pr oblems with the scanner .
48 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE P roblem: During installation I got the err or message: P aperP ort Installation is not complete. What do I do? The installation procedure was not successful. Y ou need to reinstall the P aperP or t software.
T ROUBLESHOOTING 49 P roblem: The status light is blinking what does this mean? The status light indicates the curr ent state of the scanner . Descriptions of the most common patterns ar e listed below . Contact Visioneer T echnical Support if you experience a differ ent blinking pattern.
