B EFORE Y OU B EGIN 5 Installing Installation is a quick, four-step process: 1. Assemble the scanner 2. Install the softwar e 3. Connect the power supply 4.
6 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER All the components to assemble th e scanner ar e included in the box. T o assemble the scanner: 1. Remo ve all shipping tape from the top and bottom of the scanner . 2. Slide the locking tab on the bot tom of the scanner to its unlocked position.
S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER 7 3. Insert the slots (A) on the P aper Guide onto their tabs (B) on the scanner and slide the Guide do wn into place. The catch tabs (C) “ snap ” into place. Refer to the picture on page 2 to see the location of the assembled parts.
8 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 5. Insert the P aper S top onto the back of the scanner and slide it downwar d to “ snap ” its tabs into place. 6. Plug the ADF cable into the ADF port on the body of the scanner . Make sure the cable is plugged in secur ely .
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 9 S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE The Installation CD contains all the driver software and scanning software to run your scanner . T o install the softwar e: 1. S tart Microsoft Windo ws and make sure that no other applications are running.
10 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE When the CD starts, the Vision eer Installation window opens automatically . 3. On the Installation M ain Menu, click Install P roducts . The next window lis ts the software that is available to install on your computer .
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 11 6. The Select Language windo w ope ns for the P a perP or t software. Click the drop-down menu arr ow and select the language you want to use. Click OK . The first P aperP or t Installation windo w opens. 7. On the P aperP ort W elcome windo w , click Nex t .
12 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 14. When installation of P aperP ort is finished, the W elcome to the OneT ouch 4.0 Setup W izard opens. 15. Click Nex t . 16. On the V isioneer License Agr eement windo w , read the license agreement. I f you accept the terms, select I Agree , and click Ne x t .
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 13 18. Select the option y ou want. ■ Full I nstall (OneT ouch, TW AIN and ISIS) —This is the re commended installation. It installs the OneT ouch 4.0 software which pro vides the necessary driver software for the scanner .
14 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE ■ ISIS only —The ISIS driver is installed. Y ou can use applications that use the ISIS driver to scan. Y ou can use WIA to scan if your computer is running Window s XP . Y ou will not be able to use the TW AIN driver or OneT ouch to scan.

16 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S TEP 3: C ONNECT THE P OWER S UPPLY Connect the power supply and po wer cor d, and plug the power supply into an electrical outlet. T o connect the po wer supply: 1. Plug the pow er supply into its power port on the scanner .
S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE AND T URN ON THE P OWER 17 S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE AND T URN ON THE P OWER Y our Visioneer 9650 scanner connects to any available USB por t. Check your computer’ s manual fo r the USB por t locations. 1. Remo ve any protective tape from the USB cable.
18 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 3. T urn on the power switch, loca ted on the back of the scanner . The status light comes on and flashe s indicating that the scanner is receiving po wer . If you are using W indows XP S ervice P ack 2, and have plugged the USB cable into a USB 1.
S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE AND T URN ON THE P OWER 19 4. Y our computer recognizes that a scanner is plugged into the USB port and automatically loads the a ppropriate driver softwar e to run the scanner . Do not proceed until you r eceive a message that your computer has found the new har dwar e, or updated the driver database.
20 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 6. Click OK . 7. Click Close on the I nstallation Complete window to close and e xit the software installer . 8. When the window appears for in stalling the QuickScan software, click Ne x t and follow the instructions on the scr een.

The CD also includes a free copy of Acr obat ® Rea der ® in case your computer does not have it alr eady installed. The Scanner R eadme file is in HTML format and will open in any standar d browser .

24 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Scanning If you sele cted the recommended F ull Install option for y our scanner’ s driver (see page 13), you have several options for scanning. Each method scans equally well so us e th e one with appropriate options for the item you ar e scanning.
L OADING D OCUMENTS TO S CAN 25 L OADING D OCUMENTS TO S CAN Y our scanner can scan a stack of documents or a single item. T o load a stack of document s in the A utomatic D ocument F eeder: 1. U nfold the P aper Guide Extension and adjus t the P aper Guide for the size of paper .
26 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 2. Load your stack of documents face up , with the top edge of the pages into the Automatic D ocument F eeder . T o load a single item: 1. Place the item on the sc anner glass, face do wn. 2. Align the item with the arro w on the reference frame.

28 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE The scanner begins scanning. Wh en the process finishes, the scanned images appear in the De stination Application. I n the example below , the Destination Application is P aperP ort. T o cancel scanning, click the Canc el button.
U SING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTON P ANEL 29 U SING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTON P ANEL The OneT ouch Button P anel is also your on-screen set of controls for the scanner . The OneT ouch Button P anel shows information about the scanner and its settings. 1. T o open the O neT ouch Button P anel, click the OneT ouch icon.
30 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE ■ The Detail View sho ws the current scan settings for a button. If the P roperties window is not open, right-click the icon on the Detail View or But ton View to open it. This sample shows the de scription of setting 1.

After the changes have been saved, the Detail V iew of the button will change to reflect your new settings. 4. T o close the OneT ouch B utton P anel, click the close button on the panel.

U SING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTON P ANEL 33 T HE D EFAULT O NE T OUCH S ETTINGS ON Y OUR S CANNER Y our scanner is preconfigured to scan items for various basic tasks, such as email or fax, then send the scanned image to an appropriate, preselected Destinat ion Application.

The OneT ouch P roperties window also contains special scanning feat ures such as scan ning and burning to a CD, an d scanning and converting text directly into an HTML web page.

T o configure the list of available applications, click the Option s tab at the top of the dialog box and select the desir ed options.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 39 3. F rom the Select Configuration list, select a scan configuration. The scan configuration list is preset for the application you select in the Select Destination list. If you select a differ ent application, the configurations are for that application.
40 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S ETTING D ESTINATION A PPLICATION P ROPERTIES The different types of Dest ination A pplications have various properties that you can select. 1. On the OneT ouch P roperties window , click a Destination Applic ation.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 41 P APER P ORT P ROPERTIE S These properties apply to P aperP ort, and are for designating the folder to receiv e your scanned items. 1. Select the P aperP or t folder wher e you want the file of the scanned image to be located.
42 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T EXT D OCUMENTS P ROPERTIES These properties apply to Microsoft W ord , Microsoft E xcel ® , and the other applications indicated by thei r icons in the list. The properties apply to the OCR settings for the applicat ions.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 43 The Add T ext Based Link dialog box opens. 3. Click Browse to find the application y ou want to add to the list. When you select the application using the B ro wse button, steps 1, and 2 on the dialog box are automatically filled in, and the application icon appears in step 3.
44 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE I MAGE D OCUMENTS P ROPERTIES These properties apply to Microsoft P aint and other image processing applications. 1. Click in the Color document handling settings boxes for the options you want. The options will apply to all the applications in the group.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 47 E M AIL P ROPERTIES These properties apply to email applications so you can specify the folder for documents that you will attach to an email mes sage.
48 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 3. If you need to change your email client, or any othe r internet options, click the Internet Options button. The Window s Internet Options Control P anel opens. Click the P rograms tab and choose a new email client from the Email list.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 49 S ELECTING P AGE F ORMAT O PTIONS The P age F ormat options that you sele ct determines the file format of the scanned document. Appropriate page format options and file types are available for the type of D estination Application select ed for the button.
50 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE The PDF format is often used to cr eate images of text pages. Y ou may want to select PDF as the page format when scanning text pages that do not requir e OCR processing. The PDF fo rm at i s al so u sed to p ut mul ti- page documents on web sites as PDF- r eadable files.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 51 T EXT F ORMATS Selecting the text format option also selects OCR processing as an automatic step for scanning. Therefor e, when you scan a document with the text format selected, the text portions of the document are automatically converted to editable text.
52 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T o select a file type for the text for mat: 1. Sel ect the Destina tion Applic ation. 2. Right-cl ick on the text f ormat icon. A menu opens. The following figur e shows the options for the TEXT format. The menu options depend on the type of Destination Application you select.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 53 S CANNING WITH O PTICAL C HARACTER R ECOGNITION (OCR) Optical Character Recognition (OCR) converts text and numbe rs on a scanned page into editab le text and numbers. Y ou can then work with the text and numbers to edit, spellcheck , change font or type size , sort, calculate, and so forth.
54 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 3. Choose OCR options . A dialog box of OCR options opens. 4. Select the option y ou want fo r the OCR conversion of your documents.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 55 R ENAMING A O NE T OUCH B UTTON The OneT ouch buttons have names that identify their pr e-set functions, such as OCR and PDF , bu t you can edit the names. T o change the button names: 1. Open the OneT ouch Pr operties window .
56 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S ELECTING O PTIONS FOR A B UTTON The OneT ouch Options determine the types of Destination Applications available for a button, as well as the location of the files of your scanned items. T o select options: 1.

58 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Cr eate copies of scanned documents —S ometimes the image of a scanned document is only saved as a temporar y file until its Destination Application is finished using it. In those cases you may want an additional, permanent c opy saved on your hard drive.

60 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE C REATING A N EW S CAN C ONFIGURATION The scan configurations are where you select the scanning r esolution, brightness, mode (color , black&white, or grayscale), and a number of other settings. N ote the lock icon on the preset configurations.

64 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE When using the A utoCrop to Original option for a single page on the Flatbed Glass, make sur e to align the top left corner of the item with the arrows at the top left corner of the F latbed Glass.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 65 page is fed through at an angle. H owever , if the page is fed through at too great an angle, the image may not straighten correctly . In that case, re-scan the page using the paper guides to feed the paper in straight.
66 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 8. Click the Advanced Se ttings tab. The options of the Advanced S ettings tab are for the Color or G rayscale scanning mode. Saturation is the str ength or purity of a color , hue is the color your eyes see as r eflected from the image, and gamma controls the brightness of the midt ones of the color .
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 67 T HE D EVICE S ETTINGS T AB A Device Settings tab appears on the Scan Configurations dialog box when your selected Destination Appl ication sends the scanned image to a printer , fax application, or othe r device.
68 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Collate copies —If y ou ’ re printing mor e than one page, collate the copies. Enter the number of copies in the Copi es box. Advan ced —Click to see additional settings for the device. The dialog that opens is specific t o the device.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 69 1. Click on the Storage Opti ons tab. 2. Click the S torage Layout opt ions you want. All documents are in the root —The scanned documents ar e saved in the root of the folder spec ified in the St orage Location.
70 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CANNING TO M ULTIPLE F OLDERS When archiving documents with the T ransfer to S t orage option, you can scan them to multiple folders.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 71 5. Click the Scan Settings , P age Settings , and Advanced S ettings tabs, and select the settings y ou want. T o help you r emember which folder it is, give the new configuration a name that indicates the folder name, such as “S torage for Business Receipts.
72 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 9. Click OK . The selected folder will no w be set as the Storage Location, such as “Business Receipts.” 10. Click Apply . The new configuration is now listed as a T ransfer to S torage configuration.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 73 13. N ow click the arro w buttons to select a button for each new configuration. Click Apply to set that button for that configuration. The following examples sho w that buttons 7 and 8 have been set to scan to each of the new configurations.
74 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Scan to multiple storage folders: 1. Insert the documents you want to scan to multiple storage folders. 2. Open the OneT ouch Pa nel and click the arro ws to get to one of the buttons set up for scanning to storage.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 75 E DITING OR D ELETING S CAN C ONFIGURATIONS T o edit or delete a scan confi guration: 1. Open the OneT ouch Pr operties window . 2. Select the s can configuration you want to edit or delete. 3. T o delete the configurat ion, click the Delete button.
76 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 4. T o edit the configuration, click the Edit button. The Scan Configuration P roperties dialog box opens for that configuration. Y ou can make changes to a configuration, but for the changes to be saved, the configuration must first be unlocked.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 77 3. Select the scan configuration Configur e Befor e Scan . 4. Right-click on Configur e Before Scan and choose an interface to use for scanning. TW A IN —The TW AIN Interface opens for you to make changes prior to scanning.
78 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CAN AND B URN TO A CD If you have a CD burner attached to your computer , you can scan directly fr om your Visioneer 965 0 sc anner onto a CD. This fe ature is available on ly on computers running W indows XP .
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 79 7. N ow s tart scanning using the button y ou selected to use t o scan and burn to CD. When scanning is finished, a bubb le message on the screen tells y ou that files are waiting t o be burned to the CD.
80 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CANNING WITH E VENT F ORWARDING If you want to specify an application to use for scanning at the start of the process, you can use event forwar ding. The scanner will feed in t he first page, but will then stop until you select the application to use.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 81 3. Select S till Image Client as the Destination Application. N ote that you cannot choose a page format for this option because the actual destination application is not selected until after the scanner feeds in the first page of y our document.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 83 C REATING AN HTML W EB P AGE FROM Y OUR S CANNED D OCUMENTS If you scan a document, whether a si ngle page or multiple pages, you can have the pages converted direct ly to HTML formatted pages for posting directly to y our web site.
84 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 6. Click OK . The OneT ouch Properties window closes. 7. N ow on the O neT ouch Button P anel, click B utton 8 (Custom) (or if you used another button, click it). When scanning is finished, the document is first conv erted to editable text using the OCR process, then is converted into an HTML format.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 85 T RANSFERRING S CANNED D OCUMENTS TO S TORAGE With the T ransfer to Storage scanni ng process, y ou can scan documents and save them in a folder in one st ep. The process is ideal for archiving documents without having to manuall y save or process them in any other way .

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 87 4. Choose a Scan Configuration. 5. Click OK . The OneT ouch Properties window closes. 6. N ow start scan ning using Button 7 (Ar chive) (or other but ton you set up for ar chiving). When scanning is finished, the do cuments are saved in the text file format and in the location you specified.
88 V ISIONEER 9650 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 3. Select a storage location on th e mapped drive or s erver for the scanned documents. Servers and mapped drives ar e repr es ented by an icon that indicates its network connection.
