B EFORE Y OU B EGIN 5 Installation Installation is a quick, four-step process: 1. Assemble the scanner 2. Install the software 3. Connect the scanner 4.

Ca refu lly remove th e p rote ctive foa m from the ADF cover release, then press the release and open the Automatic Document F eeder cover .

S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 11 T HE S CANNER D RIVER I NSTALLATION W ILL N OW B EGIN 1. The W elcome to the OneT ouch 4.0 Setup Wizard opens. Click Ne x t . 2. On the Visioneer License Agreement window , read the license agreement. If you accept the terms, select I A gree , and click Nex t .
12 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 450 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE ■ Full I nstall (OneT ouch, TW AIN and ISIS) —This is the recommended installation. It installs the OneT ouch 4.0 software, which provides the necessary driv er softwar e for the scanner’ s button to work.
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 13 5. During installation you will see this window asking you to select one of the images for your Color S pace setting. Select the option that looks best to you then click on Nex t . The selection in this window sets the default gamma value for OneT ouch.
14 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 450 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S TEP 3: C ONNECT THE S CANNER T o connect the po wer supply: 1. Plug the power supply into the power port on the scanner . 2. Plug the power cor d into the power supply and into a wall outlet. No t e : Only use the power supply ( HEG42-240200-7L made b y HiT ron) included with your scanner .
S TEP 3: C ONNECT THE S CANNER 15 T o connect the USB cable: The Visioneer Str obe XP 450 scanner connects to any av ailable USB port. Check your computer’ s manual for USB port locations. 1. Remove any protective tape from the USB cable. 2. Plug the USB cable into the USB por t on the scanner then i nto a USB port on the computer .

When you ’ re certain that the software has completely loaded, return to the “Complete the installation by connecting your hardware ” window .
S TEP 3: C ONNECT THE S CANNER 17 A DDITIONAL A PPLICATIONS A VAILABLE WITH Y OUR S CANNER Y our scanner includes free, a dditional applications. T o install the additional applications: 1. Return to the disc ’ s main menu and click on Install P roducts .

L OADING D OCUMENTS 23 Scanning from OneT ouch With powerful featur es such as scanning with VRS at the touch of a button, OneT ouch is the main interfac e for using the scanner and accessing these features. C ONFIGURING O NE T OU CH 31 C REATING A N EW S CAN C ONFIGURATION The Scan Configurations are where yo u select the scanning resolution, brightness, mode (color , black&white, or grayscale), and a number of other settings. T o create a new configuration: 1.

C ONFIGURING O NE T OU CH 33 T HE P AGE S ETTINGS T AB Click the P age Settings tab to select options applicable t o how you want the image to appear after scanning. Siz e —Size is the page dimensions of the documents being scanned. ■ St a n d a rd —click the menu arrow and choose a page size from the list.
34 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 450 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE ■ S traighten Image —Select this option to let the scanner automatically determine if a page is skewed, then straighten its image. The input tray paper guides should be flush to the edges of the paper to prevent paper feeding in at too great of an angle.
C ONFIGURING O NE T OU CH 35 T HE A DVANCE D S ETTINGS T AB The options of the Advanced S ettings tab are for the Color or G rayscale scanning mode. Drag the sliders to the left and right to change the color settings. As you do, the image changes to show the effects of the new settings.

Select the Scan Configuration you want to edit or delete. 3. T o delete the configuration, click the Delet e button.
C ONFIGURING O NE T OU CH 39 C ONFIGURE B EFORE S CA N Choosing Configure Before Scan simp ly opens either the TW AIN or WIA scanning interfac e when you press or click the button. Y ou can then use the interface to change the color mode, resolution, and other settings.

Ap p r o p r i a t e Fi l e Fo r m a t o p t i ons and file types are available for the type of Destination Applic ation selected for the button.
C ONFIGURING O NE T OU CH 43 I MAGE F ORMATS Select an image F ile F ormat for phot os, artwork or other documents that you want to save as images. BMP and TIFF a re standar d image file formats generally used if you want to do additional image processing.
44 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 450 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T EXT F ORMATS Selecting the text format option al so selects OCR processing as an automatic step for scanning. Therefor e, when you scan a document with the text format s elected, the text portions of the document are automatically converted to editable text.
C ONFIGURING O NE T OU CH 45 Sim p le T e x t —The .txt file format. T ext with no formatting; used by the standard M icrosoft N otepad application. Rich T ext F ormat —The .rtf file format. T ext that retains formatting when converted. A vailable with Microsoft W ordP ad and W ord.

C ONFIGURING O NE T OU CH 47 4. Select the option you want for the OCR conv ersion of your documents. Au to orient page—Select this option to check the page orientat ion and automatically rotate an improperly or iented page image so the text is recognizable by the OCR process.

Select the folder where y ou want the file to be located. 2. Click OK . Then click OK or Ap pl y on the OneT ouch P roperties window .
C ONFIGURING O NE T OU CH 49 T ext Documents P roperties These properties apply to text editing applications such as Microsoft W ord. The properties apply to the Optical character Recognition (OCR) settings for these applications. 1. Click in the General OCR settings boxes for the options you want.
50 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 450 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE The Add T e xt Based Link dialog box opens. 3. Click Browse to fin d the application you want to add to the list. When you select the application using the B rowse button, steps 1 and 2 on the dialog box are automatically filled in, and the application icon appears in step 3.
C ONFIGURING O NE T OU CH 51 Image D ocuments P roperties These properties apply to image pr oce ssing applications such as M icrosoft Pa i n t . 1. Click in the Color document handling settings boxes for the options you wan t. These options will apply to all the applications in the group .
52 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 450 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S torage P roperties These properties apply to the D estination Application named T ransfer to S torage. If a CD burner is a ttached to your computer , you also use this dialog box to start the Burn to CD process.

If you ’ re using one of those applications, such as America Online ® (AOL), you need to know which folder contains the scanned documents so you can manually attach them to your email messages.

C ONFIGURING O NE T OU CH 57 F or instance, when you scan dir ectly to an eMail application, the file is automatically attached a blank email message, but the file is not permanently saved to your computer . This would also occur if you scan to a printer or fax application.

C REATING AN HTML W EB P AGE FROM Y OUR S CANNED D OCUMEN TS Y ou can conv ert scanned pages to HTML format for posting directly to your web site.

N ow press or click the scan button to start scanning. 7. When scanning is finished, the document is first converted to editable text using the OCR process, then is converted into an HTML format.

U sing Microsoft Windo ws, create the folders that you want to use for storing scanned items. 2. Open the O neT ouch P roperties window . 3. Select T ransfer to Storage as the Destination Application.
64 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 450 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 7. Click the Storag e Options tab . 8. Click the Browse button. 9. Select the folder you cr eated for storing the scanned documents. If you haven ’ t created the folder yet, you can click the Mak e New Fo l d e r button and type th e name for the new folder .
U NIQUE S CANNING F EATURES AND D ESTINATIONS 65 10. Click OK . The selected folder will now be set as the S t orage Location, such as “Business Receipts.” 11. Click OK . The new configuration is now listed as a T ransfer to S torage configuration.

68 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 450 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 2. Click the P roperties button. Y our scanner has a built-in power sa ving fe ature that is set to po wer down after 15 minutes of idle time. Y ou can change the time before the scanner powers down, from 1 minute to a maximum of 3 hours.
C HECKING THE H ARDWA RE AND L AMP S ETTINGS 69 Scanning from TW AIN Y ou can scan fr om any TW AIN scanning application instead of scanning from the OneT ouch button on your scanner or the OneT ouch button panel. Please refer to the software user ’ s guide, for the application that you are using, for steps to open the TW AIN interface.

Select a Destination A pplication, such as ScanSoft P aperP ort. 3. Select Configure Before Scan , then right-click on Configur e Before Scan and select TW AIN from the menu.

72 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 450 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T HE TW AIN I NTERFACE O PTIONS Mod e —Select a scanning mode: Bla ck &W hi te to scan in black and white. Us e this setting for letters, memos, and other black and white ma terial. This scan mode produces the smallest file size.
S CANNING WITH THE TWAIN I NTERFACE 73 Fi lt er —The Filter is the ability of your scanner to automatically remo ve a color from a scanned item. The F ilter option applies to Black&White or G rayscale Mode.
74 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 450 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE AutoScan on document insertion —Y our Visioneer Strobe XP 450 scanner includes AutoLaunch technology that senses when an item is inserted into the paper feed and starts scanning immediately . The item is scanned with the current settings on the TW AIN interface.
S CANNING WITH THE TWAIN I NTERFACE 75 Scanning from WIA Microsoft Windo ws XP and Windows V ista include their own scanning interface—known as Windows I mage Acquisition (WIA)—for acquiring images from scanners, digital cameras, and other digital devices.

S CANNING WITH THE TWAIN I NTERFACE 77 Scanning from ISIS Y ou can use the ISIS interface from Q uickScan™ or any other application that will access the ISIS driver . The QuickS can Demo software was pr ovided with your scanner . N ote that the ISIS interface for each applicat ion varies depending on the application.

R EPLACE THE ADF P AD A SSEMBLY 79 4. Wipe the ADF pad from top to bottom. Be careful not to snag the cloth on the springs on either side of the pad. 5. Close the co ver when you ’ re finished. R EPLACE THE ADF P AD A SSEMBLY The ADF pad will w ear out and is desi gned to be a user-replaceable part.

The Readme file contains additional information that may hel p you diagno se proble ms with the scanner .
T ROUBLESHOOTING 81 P roblem: The installation will not co mplete successfully . If installation finishes, the scanner ’ s OneT ouch 4. 0 options do not seem to work properly . What do I do? A likely cause is that some driver pr ograms are alr eady installed on your computer for another scanner .

P roblem: If the USB cable is disc onnected during a scan, the scanner does not reconnect when the US B cable is plugged back in.
T ROUBLESHOOTING 83 The table below describes the error codes. In all cases you should c heck the cable connections. If you are using a USB hub, try plugging the USB cable directly to the back of the computer . If you are using a power strip , try plugging the powe r supply directly to a wall outlet.
