I NSTALLING THE S CANNER S OFTWARE 4 I NSTALLING THE S CANNER S OFTWARE T o install the scanner softwar e: 1. S tart Micr osoft W indo ws 98 or M icrosoft 2000 and make sur e that no other applications ar e running. 2. Insert the CD into your computer ’ s CD-R OM drive.
5 4400 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE C ONNECTING THE S CANNER Y our Visioneer 4400 USB scanner connects to any available USB port. Check your computer ’ s manual for the USB port location. T o connect y our Visioneer 4400 USB scanner: 1. Plug the USB cable on the back of y our scanner into any USB por t on your computer .
S ETTING U P THE S CANNER 6 A progress message appears saying that the USB scanner has been found. The scanner is now corr ectly installed. 3. F rom the CD, install the other software applications to y our computer . 4. When you are finished installing the other softwar e, remo ve the CD from your computer and stor e it in a safe place.
7 4400 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE S CANNING AN I TEM Y ou can scan many types of items, fr om small business car ds to A4-sized pages. The scanner also has special settings for scanning color photos and text documents. Y our scanner is pr eset to scan color images.
S CANNING AN I TEM 8 The Scan Manager appears. 4. F r om the list of Scanner S ettings labeled “Scan P age F or ,” select the most appropriate setting for the item y ou ’ re scanning. I n the example abo ve, the selected setting is “Color D ocument-F aster .
9 4400 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 7. Check the preview image. I f you want to change the scanner setting for the item, click one of the options in the list to “Scan P age F or .” F or example, to scan a black and white image instead of a color photo, select Black & White Photo in the list.
A DJUSTING S CANNER S ETTINGS 10 9. T o select the area to scan, drag the bor ders of the selection r ectangle surrounding the pr eview image to reduce or enlarge the ar ea. 10. If you want to pr eview the item again with the new settings, click the P review button again on the Scan M anager .

A DJUSTING S CANNER S ETTINGS 12 Selecting the pr oper scanner setting befor e scanning produces the best results for a scanned item. The scanner setting determines the resolution of the item and the number of possible shades of gray or color . The symbols next to the setting names indicate the scan mode—color , grayscale, or black and white.
13 4400 USB S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Size —The page size for the image. If y ou want to use one of the pr eset sizes, click the drop-do wn arro w and choose the size fr om the list. If you want to create a custom siz e, click on the pictur e window and drag the mouse.
A DJUSTING S CANNER S ETTINGS 14 4. Click the Save As button. The Sav e As dialog box appears. 5. T ype a name for the new scanner setting. 6. Click Save . The new setting is added to the list of “Scan P age For ” options at the top of the dialog box.

C LEANING THE S CANNER G LASS 16 C LEANING THE S CANNER G LASS Scanning items that have ex cessive amounts of dirt or dust may dirty the glass. T o ensure the best quality scanned item, wipe the scanner glass with a soft clean cloth to rid the glass of dust or other debris.
