S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER 5 S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER 1. Remo ve the scanner from its protective foam and plastic bag. 2. Check inside the document feeder mechanism and carefully remove any foam particles that may have gotten inside it. Leave the co ver open so you can attach the Input tray .
6 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 430 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE T o install the software: 1. S tart Microsoft Windo ws and make sure no other applications are running. 2. Insert Di sc 1 into your computer ’ s CD-R OM drive. The Installation menu automatically opens.
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 7 3. On the Main M enu, select Install P roducts . 4. Make sure the box es for Nu a n c e Pa p e r Por t ® and Scanner Dr iver are checked.

Click the drop-down menu arro w and select the language you want to use. Click OK . 2. On the P aperP ort W elcome window , click Ne x t .
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 9 4. The next window lists the choices of the drivers that you can install for your scanner . 5. Select the option you want. Click Nex t . ■ Full Install (OneT ouch and TW AIN) —This is the rec o m me n de d installation.

S elect the option that looks best to you and click Nex t . This sets a default gamma value for scans and can be changed later on.
S TEP 3: C ONNECT THE P OWER S UPPLY 11 S TEP 3: C ONNECT THE P OWER S UPPLY Connect the pow er supply and power cor d, and plug the pow er supply into an electrical outlet. T o connect y our Visioneer P atriot 430 scanner: 1. Plug the power supply into the power port on the scanner .
12 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 430 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE AND T URN ON THE P OWER The Visioneer P atriot 430 scanner connects to any available USB port. Check your computer’ s manual for USB port locations. 1. Remove any protective tape from the USB cable.
S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE AND T URN ON THE P OWER 13 If y our computer is running Windo ws XP or Windo ws Vista, you will see a message similar to the following. 4. When you ’ re certain that the software has completely loaded, return to the “Complete the installation by connecting your hardware ” window .

Load the documents into the scanner face down with the tops of the page inserted into the Automatic D ocument F eeder .
S CANNING FROM O NE T OUCH 21 S CANNING FROM O NE T OUCH OneT ouch is your main scanning interface for using the scanner . The OneT ouch LED on the scanner shows wh ich scan setting will be used for scanning. It is scan setting 6 in the example below .

Each OneT ouch button configuration consists of a Destination A pplication , a Scan Configuration , and a Doc um en t Format .

As you click the arrows to cy cle through the buttons, the available settings on the window change to sho w them for each button.

Siz e —Click St a nd a rd , click the menu arro w and choose a page size from the list, or click Cus to m and enter the horizontal and v ertical page dimensions in the boxes.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 31 ■ S traighten Image —Select this option to let the scanner automatically determine if a page is skewed, then straighten its image. The input tray paper guides should be flush to the edges of the paper to prevent paper feeding in at too great of an angle.

Drag the sliders to the left and right to change the color settings. As you do, the image changes to show the effects of the new settings.

36 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 430 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE C ONFIGURE B EFORE S CA N Choosing Configure Before Scan simp ly opens either the TW AIN or WIA scanning interface when you press or click a button. Y ou can then use the interface to change the Picture T ype, Resolution, and other settings.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 37 WIA —The Window s Image Acquisition (WIA) Interface opens for you to make changes prior to scanni ng. Please see “Scanning from the WIA Interface ” on page 73 for detailed instr uctions about scanning with the WIA Interface.

The following windo w will open asking if you want to cancel the entire job. ■ Ye s —Scanning stops and all pages scanned in this batch, up to this point, will be deleted.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 39 S ELECTING P AGE F ORMAT O PTIONS The P age Format options that y ou select determines the file format of the scanned document. Appropriate page format options and file types ar e available for the type of Destination Application selected for the button.
40 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 430 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE I MAGE F ORMATS Select an image file format for phot os, artwork or other documents that you want to save as images. BMP and TIFF a re standar d image file formats generally used if you want to do additional image processing.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 41 T EXT F ORMATS Selecting the text format option al so selects OCR processing as an automatic step for scanning. Therefor e, when you scan a document with the text format s elected, the text portions of the document are automatically converted to editable text .
42 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 430 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Sim p le T e xt —The .txt file format. T ext with no formatting; used by the standard M icrosoft N otepad application. Rich T ext F ormat —The .rtf file format. T ext that retains formatting when converted.

P aperP or t Properties These properties apply to designat ing the P aperP ort folder to receive your scanned items.
44 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 430 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE When P aperP ort opens after you finish scanning, the thumbnails of your scanned documents ar e on the P aperP ort Desktop in that folder . T ext Documents P roperties These properties apply to text editing applications such as Microsoft W ord.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 45 The Add T ext Based Link dialog box opens. 3. Click Browse to fin d the application you want to add to the list. When you select the application using the B rowse button, steps 1 and 2 on the dialog box are automatically filled in, and the application icon appears in step 3.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 51 Destination Categories: ■ Document M anagement includes P aperP or t and other applications for processing and keeping track of your scanned documents. ■ Imag e Edi to rs include Microsoft P ain t and other drawing and graphics applications.
52 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 430 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE F or example, if you scan a pictur e to an email application, the scanned image is saved as a temporary file, then attached to the email, and the email is sent. Later , the temporary file of the scan ned picture is deleted.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 53 S CANNING WITH O PTICAL C HARACTER R ECOGNITION (OCR) Optical Character Recognition (OCR) converts text and numbers on a scanned page into editable text and numbers. Y ou can then work with the text and numbers to edit, spellcheck, change font or type size, sort, calculate, and so forth.
54 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 430 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T o scan with OCR from the Scanner Buttons: 1. P ress the F unction button to select an LED number that has a text editing program as the select ed Destination Application. 2. P ress the Sim pl ex or Du pl ex button on the scanner .
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 55 S CANNING WITH S PDF OR N PDF AND S EARCHING FOR T EXT Sear chable PDF (sPDF) and N ormal PDF (nPDF) are special forms of an Adobe PDF file. sPDF converts scanned text into the PDF format with text search and OCR capabilities.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 57 S CAN AND B URN TO A CD If you hav e a CD burner attached to your computer , you can scan directly from your scanner onto a CD. This fe ature is av ailable only on computers running Windows XP or W indows Vista 1.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 59 C REATING AN HTML W EB P AGE FROM Y OUR S CANNED D OCUMENTS Y ou can conv ert scanned pages to HTML format for posting directly to your web site. Those pages are then view able by visitors to your web site without the need for any internet plug-ins or other special processing.
60 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 430 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T RANSFERRING S CANNED D OCUMENTS TO S TORAGE With the T ransfer to Storage scanni ng process, you can scan documents and save them in a folder in one step . The process is ideal for archiving documents without having to manually save or process them in any other way .
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 61 S CANNING TO M ULTIPLE F OLDERS When archiving documents with the T ransfer to S torage option, you can scan them to multiple folders. F or example, one folder might be for “Business Receipts,” a second folder might be for “P ersonal R eceipts,” and a third folder might be for “ Ann ual Receipts.

If you haven ’ t created the folder yet, you can click the Mak e New Fo l d e r button and type the name for the new f older .

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 65 T O T RANSFER D OCUMENTS TO A S ER VER OR M APPED D RIVE When selecting the storage location for scanned documents, you can select a local folder , or a folder on a server or mapped drive.Y ou select a mapped drive using the Browse button.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 67 2. Click the P roperties button. Y our scanner has a built-in power sa ving fe ature that is set to po wer down after 15 minutes of idle time. Y ou can change the time before the scanner powers down, from 10 minu tes to a maximum of 10 hours.
68 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 430 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Scanning from the TW AIN Interface Y ou can scan fr om any TW AIN scanning application instead of scanning from the OneT ouch buttons on your scanner or the OneT ouch button panel.
S CANNING WITH THE TWAIN I NTERFACE 69 S CANNING WITH THE TW AIN I NTERFACE The TW AIN Interface is available from many applications, such as Microsoft W ord and P aint, as well as from the P aperP ort. Y ou can use the instructions in this section regardless of the application you use to open the TW AIN I nterfa ce.

S CANNING WITH THE TWAIN I NTERFACE 71 Fi lt e r —The F ilter is the ability of your scanner to automatically re move a color from a scanned item. The F ilter option applies to Black&White or G rayscale Mode.
72 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 430 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE AutoScan on document insertion —Y our Visioneer P atriot 430 scanner includes AutoLaunch technology that senses when an item is inserted into the paper feed and starts scanning immediatel y . Select this option to turn on the AutoLaunch feature.
S CANNING WITH THE TWAIN I NTERFACE 73 Scanning from the WIA Interface Microsoft Windo ws XP and Windows V ista include their own scanning interface—known as Windows I mage Acquisition (WIA)—for acquiring images from scanners, digital cameras, and other digital devices.

F INE T UNING Y OUR S CANS 75 F INE T UNING Y OUR S CANS Y ou can customize settings before you scan an item to fine tune exactly how you want to scan it. 1. On the scan window , click Adjust the quality of the scanned picture . 2. The Advanced P roperties dialog box opens.
76 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 430 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Maintenance This section contains information on maintenance, troubleshooting, uninstalling, scanner specifications, and spare parts. C LEARING P APER J AMS If your scanner stops scanning due to a paper jam in the A utomatic Document F eeder , a warning dialog box opens after a few moments.
R EPLACE THE ADF P AD A SSEMBLY 77 4. Wipe the ADF pad from top to bottom. Be careful not to snag the cloth on the springs on either side of the pad. 5. Close the co ver when you ’ re finished. R EPLACE THE ADF P AD A SSEMBLY The ADF pad will w ear out and is desi gned to be a user-replaceable part.
78 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 430 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE R EPLACING THE R OLLER A SSEMBLY After extended use, the roller may wear out and may need to be replaced. It is a user-replaceable part and can be reorder ed. F requent paper jams are a symptom of a worn roller assembly .
R EPLACING THE R OLLER A SSEMBLY 79 5. Discar d the worn roller . It cannot be r epaired. 6. Before installing the new roller , clean any dust that may have gotten on it during shipping. 7. T o install the new roller , inser t the right end of the roller into its housing socket.
80 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 430 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 8. When you are certain that the gears ar e engaged, swing the roller into it scanner and align the left side wi th it s mount. Then g ently slide the roller to the left to fit its left end into its mount.
T ROUBLESHOOTING 81 T ROUBLESHOOTING In addition to the troubleshooting information contained in this section, please see the Readme file on y our installation CD. The Readme file contains additional information that may help y ou diagnos e proble ms with the scanner .

If installation finishes, the scanner ’ s OneT ouch 4. 0 options do not seem to work properly . What do I do? A likely cause is that some driver pr ograms are alr eady installed on your computer for another scanner .

P roblem: If the USB cable is disc onnected during a scan, the scanner does not reconnect when the US B cable is plugged back in.
