About This Manual The screen displays used in this ma nual are representations of what m ight appear w hen you us e your scanner . Since what you see depends on the frequencies for your area and the set tings you select, you might notice some differences between what is in this manual and what appear s on your scanner .
Feature Highlights How the Scanner ’s Controls Are Represented in This Manual T o help navigate the scanner’s menus, the steps shown in this manual sh ow the displays you see and the keys you pres s or control you operate to get a desired resu lt.
T o get the most from this manual, review the contents to become familiar with the basic functions available. If you are n ew to scannin g, be sure to read “Understandin g Scanning” on Page 15 for a quick background on the technology . The first thing you’ll need to do is inst all batteries in the scanner .
Understanding Scanning Underst anding Scanning This section provides you with background on how scanning works. Y ou don’t really need to know all o f this to use your scanner , but some background knowledge will help you get the most from your UBC3500XL T .
This is dif ferent from scanning because you are searching for frequencies th at have not been programmed into the scann er . When you select frequency bands to search, the scanner sear ches for any active frequency within the lower and upp er limits you specify .
Understanding Scanning with each other to the po int where it is impossible to clearly receive any of the st ations. A scanner equipped with CTCSS a nd DCS (like your scanner ) can code each received fr equency with a specific CTCSS or DCS frequency .
Conventional Scanning Conventional scanning is a relatively simple concept. Each group of users in a conventional system is assigned a single frequency (for simplex systems) or two frequencies (for repeater syste ms) . An y t ime one of them transmits, their transmission always goes out on the same frequency .
Understanding Scanning Repeater Operation Repeater systems use two frequencies: on e transmits from the radio to a central repeater; the other tr ansmits from the repea ter to other radio s in the system.
Included With Y our Scanner Setting Up Y o ur Scanner Owners Scanner AC Adapter Belt Clip Manual Wri st S t ra p Batteries (with antenna attache d) BNC/SMA Adapter and other printed material Includ.
