CHAPTER 1. GETTING STARTED Introduction Thank you for purc hasing the UMA X Astra 4000U scanne r. This high-res olution 120 0 x 2400 dpi scanne r is perfect for your many scanning needs.
Astr a 400U Back P anel System Requirements This section de fines the m inimum system requi rements nec essary to opera te the Astra 40 00U scanner. Please refer to the section below that ap plies to your scanner an d computer type.

About Scanner Connectors USB Connectors Many newer computers, both PC and Macintosh, rel y on USB technology as the prim ary method o f communication w ith computer p eripherals. W ith this new US B “plug-and -play” technology your compu ter automatically configures itself to work with USB peripherals.
1. Locate the USB cable that is provided. First, plug one en d of this cable firmly into th e USB port on the back of the scanner. 2. Second, plug the other end of this cable into the port located on the back panel of the computer. Macintosh Connection 1.
CHAPTER 2. YOUR FIRST SCAN Before you begin y our first scan, you m ust install the scan ner and the bundled soft ware. Refer t o the Quick Start Guide for installation and scanner test instru ctions. You can pe rform a basi c scan using any of the so ftware appl ications bun dled with thi s scanner.
7. In the Click to Scan section of th e VistaScan Beginner window , click the icon that corresponds to the type of im age you are scanni ng. For exampl e, to scan a col or photograp h, choose “Col or Phot o”. To scan t ext or a blac k and whit e drawing, choose “Text/Lineart”.
CHAPTER 3. SCANNING BASICS VistaScan is the primary program or driver you use to scan with your Astra 4000U scanner. It is a TWAIN-com pliant pro gram, which m eans that it can be run from other programs that support scan ning, like PhotoDeluxe, OmniPage, an d others.
Show Ruler The Show Rul er comma nd displays o r hides the rulers that border the top and left sides of the Preview window. These ruler s correspond to th e rulers on your scanner’s object glass. Clicking on th e Show Ruler checkbox turns off (removes the checkmark) and hides the ruler.
Printer To specify whi ch printer t o use when printing sca nned images: 1. Click on the Prin ter icon. The printer cu rrently selected as the default appears to th e right of the Scan To icon set. 2. If you wa nt to chan ge any of t he printer sett ings, click o n the Properties button.
Scanner Information The Scanner Information tab displays informatio n about your scanner. The info rmation includes: • Scanner Manufacturer • Scanner Model • Firmware Vers ion • VistaScan Vers.
The image is quickly scanned and displayed in the Preview window. There a re three Pr eview tools in the VistaScan Beginner window. Zoom tool – Lets you enlarge or redu ce the view of the im age in the Preview window. To use the Zoom tool: Once the preview im age appears in the Preview window, click on the Magnifying Glass icon.
Defining the Type of Image to Scan The Beginner w indow provides pr e-defined scanning op tions so you can quickly and easily scan any of the following items: • Color Photos – use th is setting wh.
Flatbed Reflective: Scans paper originals (non-tr ansparen cies) e.g., photographs, documents, and brochures. Three other set ting optio ns appear onsc reen that are available with t his scanner: UTA Transmissive, UTA Negative, Automatic Document Feeder.
NOTE: Not all graphic applications support 36 -bit graphic files. To determine whether the software you want to use is capable of wor king with 36- bit graphics, refer to your software docume ntation. Changing the Resolution Setting Scanning resol ution is m easured in dots per inch (DPI).
NOTE: Choosing the True Color RGB 36-bit settin g captures more data than the 24-bit setting. This means that the file sizes listed above will be larger if you scanned images using the True Color 36-bit RGB setting.
To change t he Descreen setti ng: 1. Click the Descreen option to display the drop down menu. 2. Choose one o f the Descreen op tions: No Descreen – No Descreen ing. Magazine – Specifies 133 lines per inch. This option smoot hes the fine dot patter n found in glossy magazines.
VistaScan provides the following filter options: No Filter – Use thi s option when you do not want to sharpe n or blur t he image. Sharpen – Use this option to sharpen lines that may be fuzzy or not clean in the orig inal image. Sharp en More – Use this opt ion when y ou want t o sharpen the image more than the st andard S harpen filter does.
2. Enter the desired scale fact or in either t he Width or Height t ext box. When locked, width and hei ght entries are ide ntical. The widt h and hei ght fields are dynamic, u pdating on e field autom atically changes the other field. If the scale output size is unloc ked, you can se the widt h and height output dimensi ons individual ly.
Selecting the Scan to Devi ce or Applicati on To specify the device or appl ication to w hich you want to s end the scanne d item: 1. Click the arrow above the Scan To text on the Scan Control Unit. The Scan Control Unit panel slides back to display the Scan To icon s.
To remove a selected fram e: 1. Click on the Job List button. Thumbnails of the selected frames app ear in the job list window. 2. Click o n the thum bnail of the frame you want to remove. A red box appea rs around the s elected thumbnail. The frame in th e Preview window associated with the thu mbnail changes to a dashed outline.
Using the Contrast Bar This setting controls the difference b etween light and da rk areas in an im age. Moving the slider on the scroll bar to the right increases the gray shades between light and dark areas. Moving it to the left decreases gray shades b etween light and d ark areas.
Click Reset to cancel the changes and return the value to the default setting. Adjusting the Color Balance The Color Adjustment feature controls the hue an d saturatio n of a particular color. When you click on the Color Balance tab from the Color Adjustments panel, a continuous color spectrum wheel appears.
The following lists the possible rotate and flip selections: • Flip/Rotate Horizontally – flips th e image horizontally and rotates it 90 degrees coun ter clockwise. • Flip Horizontal – flips the image horizontally. • Rotate 90 CCW – rotates the image 90 degrees counter clockwise.
2. Click on one of the listed applicatio ns or utilities to launch the software. 3. Click the F ind/Refresh Scanner option to re-initialize the scanner. Click the Help option to view VistaAccess online help. Click the Exit opt ion to rem ove the scanner ic on from the Finder area and close VistaAccess.
7. Click and drag any of the E-Card template elem ents to move them around , creating y our own E-Card style. 8. Choose the Add text c ommand from the Tex t menu (or cl ick on t he Text butt on from t he left-hand column). The Text Setting win dow opens.
3. Select your copy settings . Click t he Copy button to make the cop ies, then click Exit when you are finished. UMAX Copy Utility Features Brightness: Lets y ou select the bri ghtness levels t o use wh en you print the copies of the scanned im age. If the image is too dark, click the up arrow to lighten th e copy.
CHAPTER 4. SCANNING PROJECTS The UMAX Astra 4000U scanner includes bund led software to help you with a variety of task s. This chapter shows you how to scan a nd print im ages, and eve n turn a pa ge of text into an onl ine text d ocument that you can edit.
5. Click one of the four icons in the Click to Scan area of the VistaScan Beginner window. Your selection identifies the typ e of image you are about to scan and tells VistaScan how to set the scann er options for the best results. The image type sel ections include: C olor Photos , Text/Line art, Web Images, and Printed Matter settings.
7. Lift the document cover and place the form you wa nt to scan face-do wn in the ce nter of the object glass of the scanne r. 8. Click the Preview button. 9. Click the Text/Lineart icon in the Click to Scan area to begin the scan. 10. When the scan is complete, click the Exit button at the bottom of the window.
Converting Scanned Text to Ed itable Text with OmniPage OmniPage let s you scan an i mage that cont ains text and c onvert it to editable text so you do not have to retype the text . The process differs sli ghtly for PC a nd Maci ntosh users. Follow the a ppropriate instructions for the system that you are using.
2. From the OmniPage LE window, cl ick the Sc anner icon an d select Flatbed. Click Do ne . For PC Users: 1. Choose Acquire Image from the File menu. Select Flatbed from the Paper Path field in the Load Scanner dialog box, then click Scan to scan the im age.
d. Select Presto! Phot oAlbum . The Phot oAlbum window appears . For Macintosh Users: a. Double-click the Hard Driv e icon. b. Double-click the Presto! PhotoAlbum application folder. c. Double-click the Presto! PhotoAl bum application icon to launch VistaScan.
11. Click on the Color Photos icon in the Click to Scan area of the VistaScan Beginner window . The scanner perfor ms the final , high-resol ution scan. For PC Users: After the scan is complete, click the Exit button. 12. A th umbnail o f the im age you just scanne d appears i n the Phot o Browser window.
CHAPTER 5. HOW TO GET HELP The Astra 4000U scanners have been designed to be reliable, easy-to-install, and easy- to-use. If you encounter any problems while installing or using your scanner, please follow the solutions ou tlined below. • Consult the online manual.
For Macintosh Users: 1. Place the Adobe PhotoShop LE CD in the CD-ROM drive. 2. Double-click the PhotoSho p LE CD icon on the desktop. 3. Double-click English . 4. Double-click Getting Started.pdf . (If you receive an error, please install Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.
Installing Acrobat Reader for Macintosh Users To read the Om niPage LE online m anual you nee d to use Adobe Acrobat Reader. If it is not already installed on your computer, follow th e installation instructions below. 1. Place the VistaScan CD in the CD-ROM drive.

Solution: If you are ha ving pr oblems inst alling or usi ng the Ast ra 4000U sca nner, ensure that Macint osh OS 8. 0 or higher is instal led on you r comput er.
Problem: The followin g error me ssage appeared: “Sca nner not fou nd” or “Una ble to control scanner” Solution: Follow this procedure: 1. Confirm the scanner is plugged into the comp uter’s USB port. 2. Go to the Apple Syst em Profil er, listed u nder the Ap ple menu.
