8 In st al l a ti on n In st al la ti on SELECTING A LOCATION You can place the phone on a desk top or t able, mount it on a st an- dard wa ll plate, or mount it d irectl y on t he wall.
9 Installation PLACING T HE BASE ON A DESK T O P Follow these steps when y ou place the base on a desk, shelf, or table. 1 Plug one end of the suppli ed long m odular cord into the LI NE jack on the back of the base. 2 Route the m odular cord through one of the strain relief slots on the bottom of the base.

11 Installation 4 Insert the tabs on the narrow end of t he bracket into the up per slots on the bottom of the base and route the adapte r cord through the slot on the bracket’s narrow end. Insert the loose end of the modul ar cord through the center of the bracket.
12 In st al l a ti on INSTALL ING AND CHARGING THE BATTERY PACK The S P-809 is packaged with a recharg eable nickel-cadm iu m bat- tery pack. Before using your phone, you must install the b attery pac k and then charge it for 12–15 hours. Press down and slide off the compart m ent cover.
13 Installation ² If the CHA RGING i ndicator does not light when you p lace the hands et on the base, be sure the battery pac k and AC adapte r are correctly and securely connected. Also, c heck the charging contacts on the hands et and the base. If the contacts are dirty o r tarnished, c lean t hem with a pencil eraser .
14 Pre paration CHARGING A SPARE BATTERY PACK You can also charge and store a spare battery pack in the base. The spare b at tery pack f ully cha rges in 15 hours. 1 Press the ta b on the sp ar e b at te ry p a ck c om p ar t- ment and lift off the cover .
15 Prepara ti o n If the dial t on e stops, you have tou ch-tone service. Since the phone is preset t o touch- t one service, y ou do not need t o ma k e any change to the dialing mo de. If th e dial ton e continues, you have pu lse service. Press PHONE PROG/MEM # # # 3 .
16 Pre paration 2 Press REPEA T/ SCAN or SKI P/SCAN as inst ruct- ed by the v oice prompt s, to set the date and time. 3 W hen you co mplete setting the day and time, the T AD an- nounc es the day and time then beeps twice. To chec k the current day/time at any time, press CLOCK .
17 Prepara ti o n ² An no unc em ent A O ( ann ounce -o nly) — The T AD plays your outgoi ng message, but does not record a message. If you plan to use t h e T A D’s a nnounce-on ly feature, Annou ncement AO shou ld clearly st a t e that the caller cannot leave a messa ge.
18 Pre paration 2 The T A D promp ts you to press REPEA T/SCAN or SKIP/ SCAN to select an nouncement A , B, or AO. T he selected an- nounc em ent name appe ars ( A , b , or AO ). 3 Press CHANGE then ANNC . 4 Spe ak your messag e from about 8 inches in f ront of the T AD.

20 Pre paration SETTING MESSAGE ALERT If y ou want t he base to beep ev ery 15 s econds t o notify yo u that new messages have been rec eived, turn the Message Alert fea- ture on. To change the message alert setting, press CHANGE then repeat- edl y pr es s SET UP unt il you hear “Message Alert is …” and f ollow the voice prom pt instructions.
21 Prepara ti o n Chan g in g the Priority Callin g Code To cha nge the pri o rit y calling cod e, press C HANGE t hen repea t edl y press SET UP until y o u hear “The p riority calling code is …” an d fol- low the voice prompt instructions. Press STOP wh en you are done.
22 Pre paration Follo w these s t eps to at t ach the belt clip t o the S P-809. 1 Position the belt clip over the back of the handset. 2 Sl ide one tab into the re- cess on the side of the hand- set and snap the other tab into the recess on the other side.
23 T eleph one O pera tion n T ele ph one Operation MAKING AND RECEIVING A CAL L To m ake a c all, lift the hand- set an d press PHONE . When the PHO NE in di cat or lights steadil y and yo u hear t he dial tone, dial a phone number or mem ory number (see “Memo- ry Dialin g ” on Page 29).
24 T elep ho ne Op eration ² If you want to make a call but the handset is out of the b as e’s range, the hands et beeps twice. Move the handset closer to the bas e and try again. USING T HE PRIORITY CAL LING CODE W hen a cal l er uses t he priority calling cod e, the T AD beeps l oudly to alert you that you have a priority call.
25 T eleph one O pera tion SETTING THE SPEAKERPHONE’ S V OLUME You can select any of seven different volume level s by re- peated ly pressing VOLUME s or t at any tim e.
26 T elep ho ne Op eration Notes: ² The red ial memory hol ds up to 24 digits, so you can redial long - distan ce as well as local num bers. ² We rec ommend you not use REDIAL to dial numbers that include a ton e entry . This could res ult in a wrong n umber being dialed .

29 T eleph one O pera tion ² If a phone call comes in during an intercom conversation, press PHONE on t he ha ndset to answer t he c all. When you f ini sh the call , press INTERCOM t o resume the intercom conversation.
30 T elep ho ne Op eration Follow these steps to store a number in memory. 1 Press PRO G/ MEM . 2 Enter the number you want to store. (T o store th e last number you dialed, simpl y press REDIAL .) If you enter a wrong digit , press DELETE to delete the l ast entered digit.
31 T eleph one O pera tion Dialin g a Mem ory Number Press PHONE . When you hear the dial tone, press PROG/MEM , then enter the 2-digit memory location number.
32 T AD Oper ati on n T AD Operation This section describe s TAD operation at the base, but you can also operate the TAD using the handset or a nother phone while you’re aw ay from home (see “Using Remote Comman ds” on Page 39). SETTING THE T A D TO ANSWER CALLS T o set the T AD t o a nsw er calls, press ON/ OFF .
33 T AD Opera ti o n The TAD stops recording and resets to answer the next c all when: ² the caller hangs up ² the maximum message l e ngth is reached ² there are more t han 5 seconds of silence If.
34 T AD Oper ati on PLAYING MESSAGES The TAD’s me s sage count er window s hows the t ot al numb er of mess ages, both o ld and new . If there are new messages , the mail - box indicators flash to let you know which mailboxes have new mess ages. To play all messag es in a mail box, press that mailbox’s button ( 1 – 4 ).
35 T AD Opera ti o n announc es “End of messages ,” and di s plays t he total num ber of mess ages. To qu ickly play a mes s age, hold down SKIP . The pl ayback speed increase s , allowing you to quick l y scan a m essage or m ove to any place wi thin it.
36 T AD Oper ati on Follow these steps to record a mem o. 1 Press MEM O . All of the mailbox indicators flash. 2 Press a mail box button and begin speaking i n a norm al voice after the beep. The display counts up the recording time. Note : Press the mailbox button within 30 seconds after the indicators start f las hing.
37 T AD Opera ti o n 1 Press ANS SYS then # . The AN S SYS indicator lights and al l of the mailbox in dica- tors fl ash. 2 Press 1 , 2 , 3 , or 4 to select a m ailbox. The selected mail box in- dicator on the base continues flas hing and recording begins .
38 Rem ote Op eration n Remote Opera t ion W hi le you are away from your home or office, you can use a touch- tone phon e or a pulse (rota ry) phone with a pocket tone dialer to enter your remote ope.
39 Re mo te O pera t ion USING REMOTE COMMANDS Wheth er you are using the handset or calling from a t ou ch -tone phone, you press the same buttons to operate the TAD. The only difference is the way you connect with the answering system. From a remote to uch-tone phone: Dial you r phon e number .

I f no mes- sa g e is recor ded, t he T AD says “No messa g es .” 2 , t hen m ail- box num ber (1, 2, 3, 4 ) Play new messa g es i n the sele cted mai l b ox.

42 Tr oubl esho oti ng n T roubles h ooting W e do not expect you to have any problem s with your SP-809, but if you do, the following suggestions m ight help. Problem Su ggestion The han dset does not work. Move the handset closer to the base. Be sure the phone line cord and AC adapte r are correctly and securely con - nected.
43 Troubl esh ootin g ² Unplug the AC a dapter from the out let. If there is a spare battery pack in the base, remove i t. W ait 30 s econds, th en plug t he AC adapter back in and return the spare battery pack to the base. Place the hand- set on the base and make sure the CHARGING li ght is on.
44 Tr oubl esho oti ng If you still have problems, disconnect the SP-809. If other phones on the same line work properly, the fault is in this p hone or its in- stalla t i on. If you cannot find t he problem, take y our SP-809 to your local Rad ioSha ck store for assist a nce.

46 Ca re and M ai nte na nce REPLACING THE HANDSET BATTERY PACK If you follow th e instructions in “Installin g and Chargi ng the Battery Pack” on Page 12, the battery pack sho uld last about one year. If the batt ery pack do es not hold a c harge for more than 2 hou rs after an ov ernight charge, replace the battery pack with a new 3.
