5 ST ARTING T ens of thousands of kilns are used safely in homes, schools, and professional studios throughout the world. W ith a good understanding of your kiln and a little common sense you can avoid mishaps.
6 ST ARTING I NSPECT THE K ILN Carefully remove the kiln and accessories from the Hot Start Kiln box. The box should include the following if purchased with an accessory kit. 9 ST ARTING U N D E R S T A N D I N G T H E C O N T R O L L E R OPTIONS A UTO LO AD PR O B EGINNER A DV ANCED EDIT AUTO MODE Auto Mode, more commonly referred to as GlassFire Mode, is an easy and convenient programming mode that allows you to successfully fuse and slump glass as a beginner .
10 ST ARTING K e y P r e s s D e s c r i p t i o n The GlassMaster L T has a 7 segment LED display . This sometimes requires cr eative ways for repr esenting let- ters. For example the number “5” is also used to repr esent the letter “S”. See page 1 1 for a complete list of all the display messages along with a description of their meaning.

13 BEGINNER T o make things easy to understand we have identifi ed 6 steps to fusing and slumping in your Hot Start Kiln. Here are a few tips which should help you get started. 1 - L O A D I N G S HEL VES The kiln accessory kit comes with a 13” (33 cm) shelf and three 1” (2.
14 BEGINNER S TEP 1 - S T ART IN I D LE S T A TE T o start programming the kiln must be in an IdLE state. This can be verifi ed by the display alternating between the cur- rent temperature and the message IdLE. When the kiln is fi rst plugged in it will read “PF” indicating that there was a power interruption.
15 BEGINNER B A S I C F I R I N G S T E P S S TEP 4 - V ERIFY S ETTINGS The next two entries allow you to modify the ending temperature and hold time of the factory-set programs. For detailed instruction on how and when to adjust these settings see Glass 101.
16 BEGINNER B A S I C F I R I N G S T E P S As mentioned earlier , after visual inspection of your glass you may decide you want to modify your process tempera- ture values to create more or less heatwork in your next fi ring. In GlassFire Mode you can only change the Process values.

18 ADVAN CED R A M P & H O L D P R O G R A M I N G ( P R O M O D E ) W ith PRO Mode you can design and run Ramp and Hold programs that meet the specifi c needs of your glass.
19 ADVAN CED S TEP 5 - S ELECT N UMBER OF S EGMENTS The display should be fl ashing “SEG” alternately with the current segment setting. 20 ADVAN CED C H E C K I N G T H E P R O G R A M V IEW S EGMENT The V iew Segment feature is used to view which segment of the program the kiln is currently running. This feature is particularly useful when used in conjunction with the Skip Segment function to determine that the correct segment is cur - rently running.
21 ADVAN CED The Edit Mode Features were designed to allow the artist to adjust the program while it is running. These features are generally used after a visual inspection of the project indicates a change in the program is needed. Edit Mode Features can be accessed from both a GlassFire program and a Ramp and Hold Program.
22 ADVAN CED A D V A N C E D P R O G R A M M I N G A DD T EMPERA TURE The Add T emperature feature adds temperature in 5 °F (3 °C) increments to the temperature in segment two. This is considered the Process T emperature since it is holding at the peak temperature of the program.
23 GL ASS 101 The following guidelines just scratch the surface of the knowledge base associated with fi ring glass. W e highly suggest you take a fi ring class from your local dealer . If classes are not available in your area there are numerous books available on the subject that can be found at bookstores and on the internet.
24 GL ASS 101 C r i t i c a l T e m p e r a t u r e R a n g e s A “Critical T emperature Range” is any temperature or temperature range in the fi ring cycle that has a high level of potential for limiting the success of the project.
25 GL ASS 101 F USING Fusing is the process of joining 2 or more pieces of glass together by the application of heat. The glass may be in the form of sheets, stringers, frit or a host of other forms. There are dif ferent degrees of fusing. Y ou may want to fuse glass so it sticks to another piece of glass without deforming.
