A-61506 September 2006 1 Using the Brightness and Contrast Control This Reference Guide provides information and procedures for the Brightness and Contrast Control. Kodak provides a set of default color t ables with the sca nner . These tables are bundled and installe d with the Scan V alidation T ool (SVT).
2 A-61506 September 2006 Before you begin Before using the Brightness and Con trast Control, it is highly recommended that you review the information below . • The Kodak Scan V alidation T ool must be inst alled. This inst allation includes the TW AIN Datasource and the Kodak default color t ables.

4 A-61506 September 2006 The main window Following is a description of the menu options on the Brightness and Contrast Control main window . See the section entitled, “Using the Brightness and Contrast Control” for procedures o n how to use this software.
A-61506 September 2006 5 Vie w m en u The View menu p rovides the following options: Zoom 1/4 — displays the image at o ne quarter of the original size. Zoom 1/2 — displays the image at o ne half of the original size. Zoom 1:1 — displays the image at the orig inal size.
6 A-61506 September 2006 St atus bar — displays the X and Y coordinates of the current location within the displayed image, the RGB values, the n ame of the color t able currently being applied to the original image (d isplayed on the lef t side of the main window) and the scanner used to a cquire the startin g original.
A-61506 September 2006 7 Color T ables menu The Color T ables menu provides the following options: Null — when selected, will load the Nu ll color tab le into the Brightness and Contrast Control. Load... — displays the Open Color T abl e dialog box which allows you to select the color t able you want to use.

A-61506 September 2006 9 Creating a custom color t able After you have reviewed the “Before you begin” sectio n, you will be ready to st art using the Brightness and Contrast Control.
10 A-61506 September 2006 5. From the Brightness and Contrast Control main window , select File>Acquire . 6. Feed the document you have sele ct ed to use as a st arting point to create your custom color tab le. When completed, the uncorrected scanned image will appear in both the lef t and right side s of the main window .
A-61506 September 2006 11 12. Select Color T ables>Save . The Save Color T able dialog box will be displayed: 13. Enter a color table name in the Filename field and click Save .
12 A-61506 September 2006 Using an Uncorrected image as a st arting point 1. Open the Brightness and Contrast Co ntrol application. The main window will be displayed. 2. Select File>Select TW AIN Source . The Select Source dia log box will be displayed.

From the File menu select File>DPI and choo se the resolution which you will use when capturing color images in your production environment. 5. From the Brightness and Contrast Control main window , select File>Acquire .
A-61506 September 2006 15 Using a previously captured image as a st arting point IMPORT ANT : Y ou must use an uncorrected image as your st arting point for any activity which will result in the creation o f a custom color table.
16 A-61506 September 2006 6. Click OK when the image d isplayed on the right side of the Brightness and Contrast Control main window is accept able. NOTE: Selecting Cancel will undo any changes a nd restores the image on the right sid e of the Brightness and Contrast Control main window to match the or iginal image (on the left side).

18 A-61506 September 2006 Deleting a custom color t able T o delete a cust om color table: 1. Open the Brightness and Contrast Co ntrol application. 2. Select Color T ables>Delete. The Delete Color T able dialog box will be displayed: 3. Select the color t able you want to delet e and click Delete .
A-61506 September 2006 19 Glossary Brightness — Brightness and Contrast Control uses a brightness scale from -50 (darkest) to +50 (lightest). Changing the Brightness value will ef fect all color pi xels in the ima ge uniformly making all colors in the entire image darker or lighter according to the values selected.
20 A-61506 September 2006 Error messages Following is a listing of error me ssages that you may encounter when using the Brightness and Contrast Control. Message: The origin of this image can not be determined from the file. If it was not originally scanned with NULL color t ables, then it may not be a valid image for use in this applicatio n .

Description/Action: If you want to change scanners, exit and restart the Brightness and Contrast Con trol then select the desired TW AIN Source. Y ou cannot change so urces while the Brightness an d Contrast Control is running.
22 A-61506 September 2006 Message : Source is in wrong st ate for enabling. Description/Action: Exit and restart the Brightness and Contrast Control application. If the error o ccurs again, open the Scan V alidation T ool to verify that it is working properly .

Message: Unable to delete the se lected color table. Description/Action : Be sure your account is authorized to delete color table s.
24 A-61506 September 2006 Appendix A Color Concept s What is a color image? A digital color image cont ains information about a scanned document subdivided into many small regions called pixels (picture elements). Each pixel is represented as a 2 4-bit value.
