Scanner front panel buttons Use the but tons on the scanner f ront panel to st art a scan and to con figure some scanner settings. Icon Button nam e Description 1 Copy By default, print the numb er of copies currently configured in HP Document Copy. Alternatively, start the scanning software that is assigned to this button.

How to load docu ments 1. Flip up the pa per stop in the output tray that best matches the size of the documents that you are scann ing. Select the stop position that is clo sest to (and beyond) the edge of your documen ts as they come out of the a utomatic document feeder (AD F).
4. Place the stack in the mi ddle of the inpu t tray. Load the stack face up. For fast est scanning, load the stack with the left e dge leading into the ADF. NOTE: In the scanning sof tware, choose the l ayout setting that matches the orientatio n of the originals i n the ADF.
Place the origi nal face down on the sca nner glass, as indi cated by th e reference mark. NOTE: In the scanning so ftware, choose the layout se tting that matches the orientation o f the original on the scanner glass. How to scan The basic steps for scanning are: 1.

Scan from ISIS- or TWAIN-comp liant scanning softw are 1. Start the scanning soft ware, and then select the ISIS or TWAIN data source. 2. Select the sett ings that are approp riate for the documen ts that you are scan ning. 3. Carry out the appro priate actions to comple te the scan.
2 Useful scanner features Experienced docum ent managemen t professionals mi ght be interest ed in the fol lowing scan features t hat are availabl e in the HP Smart Documen t Scan Softw are. Many of these features are also available from any IS IS- or TWAIN- compliant docume nt scanning software that allo ws you to mod ify the scan settings .
3. In the Profile name box, type the name you w ant or accept the defaul t name. TIP: You might want to set up the new profile based on an existing one. To do so, select the Copy sett ings from profile chec k box, and then select an existing profile fro m the list.
NOTE: HP recommends scanni ng long pages individ ually at a resolutio n of 300 dpi or lower. Filter out color from a document (color dropout) You can filter out a d ark background from th e image conten t, for example black te xt on green paper or red inst ructions on a form.
NOTE: To set the scan background color in another scann ing software, navig ate to the ISIS or TWAIN Advanc ed Settings dialog box. On the More tab, sele ct a color from the ADF Background drop-down list.
Scan without reviewing The standard process for using the HP Smart Document Scan Software to com plete your scans is as follows: 1. Scan document pag es. 2. Review the scann ed document pages in the HP Smart Documen t Scan Software Scan Progress Wi ndow .
Instal l or repla ce a print cartridge in the impr inter The scanner uses an H P 51604A print cartridg e. You must purch ase the print cart ridge separate ly. 1. Raise the ADF input tray un til it clicks into place. 2. Lift the green l ever slightly, and sli de the imprinter comp letely to the l eft.
4. If you ar e replacin g an empty p rint cartridge, sli de it to the right to r emove it from the cartridge stal l. 5. Remove the print cartridge from its packaging . Pull the tab to remove th e protective tape from the nozzl es. 6. Hold the new print cartri dge with the nozzles do wn and slide it into the cartridge stall.

NOTE: Several paper sizes are indicated in th e imprinter carriage. If you set the imprinter at the position for the pa per size that you are using , the imprinter ma rk is printed about 5 mm (.

If you use the ADF seve ral times per week, monthl y cleaning is recommended. Set up a cleaning rout ine that is a ppropriate for t he scanner. 1. Press the Power switch to the off position, an d then disconnect the U SB cable and power cable fr om the scanner.
3. Clean the cl ear scanning stri p on the scanner bed. Wipe t he clear area wi th a clea n, damp, lin t-free clot h. 4. Close the scanner lid. 5. Lift the latch on top of the ADF to open the top and side ADF access doors.
6. Locate the white strip on the side ADF access door an d the clear scan window inside the ADF. Wi pe both of thes e areas clean with a cl ean, damp, lint -free cloth. 7. Wipe the ADF roll ers with a clean, dam p, lint-free clo th. 8. Wait several minut es for the rollers to dry, an d then close the ADF access do ors.
To clean the scanne r glass, follow these steps: 1. Press the Power switch to th e off position, an d then disconnect th e USB cable and power cable from t he scanner. 2. Open the scan ner lid. 3. Clean the glass b y using a soft, li nt-free cloth that has b een sprayed with a mild glass cleaner.
3. Clean the f ilter in one of th e following ways: • Use compressed air t o blow the debris off of the filte r. • Use a vacuum to remove the de bris from the filter. • Rinse the filter with water. NOTE: If the filte r is damaged, replace it with a new filter.
4. Close all ADF a ccess doors, and then reconne ct the USB cable and power cab le to the scanner. 5. Press the Power switch to the on position, and then update the scanner main tenance history: a . Press the Tools ( ) button on the sca nner front panel to op en the HP Scanner Tools Utility.

LED indications Scanner action or condition The Power LED is lit with a steady green light. The scanner is on and ready to scan. The Attention LED blinks green at a medium speed. The Power LED is lit with a steady green light. The scanner is scanning an original.
If the proble m persists after ve rifying the above items, try the following: 1. Press the Power sw itch to the off position , and then disconnect th e power cable from the scanner. 2. Wait 30 seco nds. 3. Reconnect the po wer cable to the scanner, a nd then press the Power switch to the on position.
Uninstall and then reinsta ll the HP Scanjet utilities If checking the scanner cable connect ions did not solve t he problem, th e problem might have occurred because of an incomplete in stallation. Try uninstalling and then rein stalling the HP scanni ng utilities.
Scanner l amp sta ys on The scanner lamp shoul d time out and tu rn off autom atically after a peri od of inactivit y (about 15 m inutes). If the sc anner lamp remains on afte r a long per iod of inactivi ty, turn off the scan ner, wait 30 seconds, a nd then turn the sc anner back on.
Scanned page s are missing at the scan de stination When scanni ng with the ADF , pages that stick t ogether are scanne d as one item. The hidden pages are not scanned. Enable Misfeed (Mul tipick) Detection to stop the scan or copy proces s if multiple pag es are fed into th e scanner at one time.
When scanning fr om the scanner glass, the it em might not be pl aced correctly on the scanner glass. Make sure that th e item you are trying to scan is placed face down on the glass and the lid is closed.
Scanning at a hig her resolution than necessary creates a larger file with no a dditional benefit. • Color scans create la rger files than do bla ck and white scan s. • If you are scann ing a large n umber of pages at one time, consid er scanning fewer pages at a time to creat e more, smaller files.
Buttons do not work After each step, press a button to se e if it is working correctly. I f the problem persists, proceed with the next step . 1. The buttons migh t be disabled in th e HP scanning softw are. Ensure tha t the Di sable front panel bu ttons setting in the HP Sc anner Tools Util ity is cleared .
Wrong prof ile is used whe n the Scan button is pr essed If you are using the HP Smart D ocument Scan Softw are, use the HP Scanner Tool s Utility to determine which HP Sma rt Document Sca n Software profile is assi gned to the Scan button. If necessary, reset the pro file assigned t o the button.
Clear a jam from the automatic document feeder 1. Remove any loose pa ges from the automat ic document feeder (ADF) in put tray. 2. Lift the latch on to p of the ADF to open t he top and side ADF ac cess doors. 3. Remove any jammed pages from the ADF input tray.
4. Remove any jamm ed pages from inside t he ADF. 5. Remove any jamme d pages from the ADF out put tray. 6. If the jamme d page still can not be removed, follow these steps: a . Open the scan ner lid. b . Push the green tab toward the scanner li d to open the inner ADF a ccess door.
7. Close the inne r ADF access door, and th en close the scann er lid. 8. At the scan destin ation, examine the scan output to determine w hich page was the last to be completely scanned.
Automatic document fe eder does not feed paper • The automatic d ocument feeder (ADF) access doors mi ght not be securel y latched. Open the ADF access doors, and then close the doors by pressing f irmly. • A problem with the ADF hardware mi ght exist.
