• To prevent skew ing, always load stacks of documents of t he same dimensions. However, if you must load stacks of mixed document sizes, center all documents in the stack by width b efore inserting them in the document feeder.

5. Gently set the stack in the document feeder. Load the pages face down with th e top of the pages p ointing into t he feeder. For best results, d o not drop the stack into the feeder and do no t tap the top edge of the stack after you have placed it in the do cument feeder.
Load cards into the docume nt feeder To load ca rds into the document fe eder, foll ow these ste ps: 1. Place th e stack of cards f ace down with t he long dimension parallel to t he paper guides. 2. Adjust the pa per guides to center the original. Make sure t he paper guides touch the edges of t he original .
• If you w ant to chan ge th e copy settings, select Start copy software and then press either th e Scan Simplex ( ) or Scan Duplex ( ) button. The HP Copy software starts on the connected compu ter where you can mo dify copy settings. • You can create scan profi les that use third-part y scanning software.

3 Useful scanner features Experienced docume nt management professio nals might be interest ed in the following scan features. These features are avail a ble from any do cument TWAIN or ISIS application that allows you to modify the scan settings in i ts user interface.

To enable long-page scans in an H P Smart Document Scan Soft ware profile, follow these steps: 1. Open the HP Smart Docum ent Scan Software. 2. Select a scan profile, an d then click Edit profile .
You can fi lter out a col or channel (r ed, green, or blue) or up to three indi vidual colors. F or specific colors, th e sensitivity se tting controls how closely a scanned color must approximate the specified color. Removing colors from the sca n might reduce the scan fil e size and improve optical character recognition (OCR) results.

3. Clean t he glass by using a soft , lint-free cloth t h at has been spra yed with a mild glass cleaner. CAUTION: Use only glass cleaner to cl ean the scanner g lass. Avoid cleaners that cont ain abrasives, ace tone, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride, all of which can damage the sca nner glass.
3. Place the unfold ed cloth into the document feed er. 4. Press the Tools ( ) button to open th e Scanner Tools Util ity. Click t he Maintenance tab. 5. Click the Clean button to feed the cloth through th e scanner. CAUTION: Wait two minutes for the components to dry befo re proceeding to the next step.
To clean the rol lers, follow these steps: 1. Press the Power switch to the off positi on, and then disconnect the USB cable and power supply from the scanner. 2. Open the scanner hatch. 3. Open the roller cover on the inside of the scanner hatch an d lift the rolle r up.
6. Open the door on the inside of the scanner, o pen the roller covers, an d then remove the rollers. 7. Remove any visible li nt or dust from the roll ers and their housi ng using eithe r compressed air or a cl ean lint-free clot h moistened wi th isopropyl alcohol.
10. Clos e the scanner hatch, and then reco nnect the USB cable and po wer supply to the scanner. 11. Press the Power swi tch to the on p osition, and the n update the scanne r maintenance history: a . Press the Tools ( ) button on the scanner front panel to open on the HP Scanner Tools Utility.

Error Description Paper Error The document feeder cannot pick up the paper or the paper is jammed. Follow these steps to resolve the err or: 1. Remove the paper from the document fee der. 2. Sort through the stack to make sure the sheets are not stuck together.
Check the cables Cable type Action Power cable The power cable is connected between the scanner and a power outlet. • Ensure that the power cable is securely connected between the scanner and a live electrical outlet or surge protector.
Check the USB connectio n Check the physical conne ction to the scanner. • Use the cable that was included w ith the scanner. An other USB cable mi ght not be compatible wi th the scanner. • Ensure that the U SB cable is securely conne cted between t he scanner and th e computer.
To reset the scanner, f ollow these steps: 1. Close the HP Smart Documen t Scan Software and HP Scan ner Tools Utilit y, if they are open. 2. Disconnect the U SB cable that connects th e scanner to the computer. 3. Turn the computer off, w ait 60 seconds, and then t urn on the computer.

The Misfeed (Mu ltipick) Detectio n stops the scan if multipl e pages are fed into the scanner at one time. To enable th e Misfeed (Multi pick) Detection feature in an HP Smart Document Scan Software pro file, follow th ese steps: 1. Open the HP Smart Docum ent Scan Software.
• If you are scanning to edit text, the opt ical character recognition (OCR) so ftware requires more processing t ime than for non-OCR scans, which is norm al. Wait for the item to scan. NOTE: For the best OCR result s, scanner compression should be set to th e minimum compression level or disabled.
Scanner buttons are not working correctly After each step, press a but ton to see if it is working correct ly. If the problem p ersists, proceed wit h the next step. 1. A cable might be l oose. Ensure tha t the USB cable and the power supply are securel y connected.
• The document feeder or ou tput tray might contain more than the ma ximum number of pages. Load fewe r pages in the document feeder, and re move pages from the output tray. • Clean the scanner pap er path to help redu ce misfeeds. If misfeeds still occur, cl ean the rollers.
