To connect the HP Ph otosmart to a Windows computer w ith an ad hoc connect ion, the computer must h ave a wireless network adapte r and an ad hoc profile. Create a n etwork profile for a Win dows Vista or Windows XP com puter using the d irections below .

5 Paper basics You can load many dif ferent types and si zes of paper in the HP Photosmart, including letter or A4 paper, phot o paper, transpa rencies, and e nvelopes.
Recommended papers for printing If you want t he best print quali ty, HP recommends u sing HP papers that are specifically designed for t he type of pro ject you are pri nting. Depending on your country/regi on, some of th ese papers mig ht not be av ailable.

NOTE: Ink level warnings and indi cators provide estimate s for planning purposes only. When you receive a low-ink warning me ssage, consider having a replacement cartridge available to avoid possible printin g delays. You do not ne ed to replace the ink cartridges until pri nt qualit y becomes unacceptable.
◦ Clean the prin thead, and t hen print t his diagnost ic page again. ◦ If cleaning the printhead doe s not solve thi s print quali ty issue, repl ace the cartridge corre spondin g to the streake d bar. NOTE: If replacing the cartridge do es not solve this print quality i ssue, contact HP support for service.

Check cartridg es Follow the se step s. • Step 1: Make sure you are u sing genu ine HP ink ca rtridges • Step 2: Check the ink levels Step 1: Make sure you are u sing genuine HP ink cartridg es Solution: Check to see if your ink cartridge s are genuine HP ink cartridges.
Step 2: Load the stack of p aper correctly Solution: Remove the stack of paper from the paper tray, reload the paper, and then slide t he paper-widt h guide inward un til it stops at t he edge of th e paper. NOTE: Do not leav e unused photo paper in t he paper t ray.
Step 2: Clean the p rinthead Solution: If the prev ious step did not resolve the issu e, try cleaning the printhe ad. To clean the printhead from the HP Photo smart Software 1. Load lette r, A4, or legal unused plain whi te paper into th e paper tray.
To select a print spee d or quality 1. Make sure you have pape r loaded in the paper tray. 2. On the File menu in yo ur software app lication, cli ck Print . 3. Make sure the product i s the selected prin ter. 4. Click the butto n that opens the Properties dialog bo x.
Print quality troubleshooting Use this section to solve these print quality proble ms: • Photo printo uts are hazy, blu rry, or have inaccura te color Photo printou ts are hazy, blu rry, or have i naccurate color Solution: For best photo color qu ality, do not allow printout s to stack on to p of photos in the paper tray.
If this did no t solve the i ssue, try the ne xt solution . Step 3: Reformat the memo ry card in your dig ital camera Solution: Check th e computer screen for an error message telling you th at the images on the mem ory card are corrupted. If the file system on the card is corr upt, reformat the memory card in your digital camera.

• Unreadable fi les. NN files could n ot be read • Photos not found • File n ot found • Invalid f ile name • Supported file t ypes for the product • File corrupted Error re ading or wr iting the file Solution: Check t o see if you have the right folder and f ile name.
Cause: There was not enoug h available mem ory on your computer to create a print preview f ile. Invalid fil e name Solution: Make sure that you are no t using any invalid symbols in the file name. Cause: The fi le name you entered was invalid. Supported file ty pes for the produc t The product so ftware only recogni zes JPG and TIF im ages.
• Out of disk space • Card access error • Use only one card at a time • Card is inserted incorrectly • Card is damag ed • Card is not fully in serted Memory card error Try the followi ng solutions to resolve t he issue. Solut ions are listed in order, with the most likely solution f irst.
Solution 1: Cl ose some app lications or r estart your compu ter Solution: Close all unnecessary ap plications. This include s applicat ions that run in the background, such as screensavers and viru s checkers. (If you tu rn off your virus checker, re member t o turn it ba ck on afte r you finish.
Cause: You had inserted the memory card b ackwards or upside dow n. Card is damaged Solution: Reformat your memory card in your camera or format your memory card in a computer by select ing the FAT format. For more informat ion, see the documentat ion that cam e with your digi tal camera.
Ink is drying Solution: Leave the shee t in the paper tra y until the messag e disappears. If it i s necessary to remove th e printed shee t before the messa ge disappears, carefully hold the printed sheet on the un derside or the edges, an d place it on a flat surf ace to dry.
Printing cannot occur without on e of each ty pe of ink cartridge inserted int o the correct slot. For more information, see: “ Replace t he cartrid ges” on page 46 Cause: The indicated ink cartridg es were inserted in to the wrong sl ots. General p rinter error Try the followi ng solutions.
If it appears that you are using the correct ink cartridges, proce ed to the next solut ion. For more information, see: •“ Order ink suppl ies” on p age 48 •“ Replace the cartridges” on page 46 Cause: The in dicated ink cartri dges were not intende d for use in this pr oduct as it was currently configured.
Cause: The indicated ink cartridg es did not have en ough ink to prin t properly. Ink car tridge pr oblem Try the followi ng solutions to resolve t he issue. Solut ions are listed in order, with the most likely solution f irst. If the first solution d oes not solve the probl em, continue t rying the remaining solu tions until the issue is resolved.
4. Run your finger al ong the top of the ink cartridges t o locate any cartridge s that are not snapp ed completel y down. 5. Press down on any cartridges th at are sticking up.
CAUTION: Be careful not to bend th e tab out more th an about 1.27 cm (0.5 inches). 11. Reinstall t he ink cartridg e. It should n ow snap do wn into pl ace. 12. Close the ink cart ridge access door, and check if the error messag e has gone away. 13. If you still re ceive the error messa ge, turn the pro duct off, and t hen on again.
Cause: The pri nt carriage latch was n ot closed properly. If this di d not s olve the issue, try the n ext solution. Solution 3: Clean th e electrical contacts Solution: Clean the cartridge elect rical contacts. To clean the electric al contac ts 1. Make sure th e produ ct is tu rned on.
4. Hold the ink cart ridge by its sides with th e bottom pointin g up and locate the electrical contact s on the ink cartridge. The electrical cont acts are four small rectangle s of copper or gold-col ored metal on the bottom of the ink cartridge. 1 Ink window 2 Electrical contacts 5.
9. Close the in k cartridge door, and che ck if the er ror message has gone away. 10. If you stil l receive the erro r message, turn the prod uct off, and th en on again. If you still receive this me ssage af ter cleaning the cartridge conta cts, you mig ht have a damaged cartrid ge.
Solution 5: Contact HP supp ort Solution: Conta ct HP support f or service. Go to: www.hp.com/support . If prompted, choose your country/regi on, and then clic k Contact HP for information on callin g for te chnical support. Cause: The product had a prob lem.
If this di d not s olve the issue, try the n ext solution. Solution 2: Make s ure the ink cartrid ges are instal led correctl y Solution: Make sure all of the ink cartridg es are properly installed. Refer to the following ste ps to resolve this e rror.
4. Run your finger a long the top of the ink cartridge s to locate any cartridg es that are not sn apped com pletely down. 5. Press down on any cart ridges that are sticking up.
11. Reinstall the ink cartridge. It should now snap down into place. 12. Close the in k cartridge access door, and check if t he error message has gone away. 13. If you stil l receive the erro r message, turn the prod uct off, and th en on again. Cause: The in k cartridges were n ot installed p roperly.
HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink cart ridges. Genuine HP ink cartridges are design ed and test ed with HP prin ters to help you easily pr oduce great re sults, time after time. NOTE: HP cannot gu arantee the q uality or rel iability of non-HP sup plies.
Previously u sed genuine H P cartridge Solution: Check the print quali ty of the current pri nt job. If it i s not satisfact ory, try cleaning the prin thead to see if that improves the qualit y. To clean the printhead from the HP Photo smart Software 1.
3. Remove all of th e ink cartridges and place them on a piece of p aper with the ink opening p ointing u p. 4. Lift the latch handle on the print ca rriage un til it stops.
6. Clean the printh ead. There are thre e areas of the print head that ne ed to be cleaned : the plastic ra mps on both sides of the in k nozzles, the edge between the nozzles and the electrical contacts, and the el ectrical co ntacts.
b . Use a fresh, light ly dampened, lint-f ree cloth to wipe a ny accumulated ink a nd debris from the edge between t he nozzles and the co ntacts. c . Use a fresh, ligh tly dampe ned, lint-free cloth to wipe the p lastic ramps on both sides of th e nozzles.
c . Wipe the area dry with a dry lint-free cloth b efore proceeding to the next step . 8. Make sure the lat ch handle is raised , and then re insert the p rinthead. 9. Carefully lower t he latch handle. NOTE: Make sure you lower the latch ha ndle before reinserting the ink cartridges.
11. Close the ink ca rtridge door. Cause: There was a problem wit h the printhe ad. If this did no t solve the i ssue, try the ne xt solution . Solution 2: Contact HP supp ort Solution: Conta ct HP support f or service.
5. Click Clean the p rinthead . 6. Follow the pro mpts until you a re satisfie d with th e quality of t he output, and then click Done . There are two stages of clea ning. Each stage lasts a bout two minute s, uses one sheet of paper, an d uses an increasing amount of ink.
