Load media This section provides instructions for loading media into the devic e. To load Tray 1 (main tray) 1. Lift the o utput tray. 2. Insert the media print-side dow n along the righ t of the tray. Make sure the stack o f media align s wi th the right and back ed ges of the t ray, and does not e x ce ed the line marking in the tray.

Change se ttings (Mac OS X) To change the settin gs 1. On the F ile menu, click Page Setup . 2. Change the sett ings that you want (such as pape r size), and then click OK . 3. On the F ile menu, click Print to op en the print driver. 4. Change the settings that you want (such as media type ), and then click OK or Print .
To print automatically on both si de s of a page (Windows) 1. Load the appropriate media. For mor e information, see Guidelines for print ing on both sides of a page and Load media . 2. Make sure the duple xer is properly installed . Fo r mo re i nformation, see Install the duplexer .
TIP: To print Web pages correctly, you might need to set your print orient ation to Landscape . Cancel a print job You can cancel a prin t jo b using one of the fo llo wing methods. Device control panel: Press ( Cancel button ). Th is cle ars th e job that the device is currently pro cessing.
4 Scan You can scan origin als a nd se nd them to a varie ty of destinations, such as a fo lder on the network or on a specific computer. Yo u can use the device control panel, t he HP software, and T WAIN-compliant or WIA-compl iant p r ogra ms o n a com puter.
Scan an original to a computer You can send a scan to a compu ter connected directly to t he device or a computer on the network. Yo u can also send a scan to a progra m in stalled on a compute r . To send a scan to a computer from the HP Solution Center 1.
Scan from a TWAIN-compliant or a WIA-compliant program The device is TWAIN-co mplaint and WIA-complia nt and works with programs t hat support TWAIN-compliant and WIA-compliant scanning devices.
For more informa tio n, see the onscreen help t hat came with the scanni ng software. Edit a scanned doc ument using optical character re cognition (OCR) software You can use OCR software to imp ort scan ne d te xt in to your preferred word-processi ng program for editing.
5 Work with memory devices The device comes with a memory card reader that can read several types of d igital camera memory ca rds. You can print an index shee t, which shows thumbnail views of photos that are stored on a memory card.

Turn the memory card so that t he label faces up, and the co ntacts are facing the device.
To print camera-selected phot os using the DPOF stan dard 1. Insert your memory card into the appropriate slot on the device. 2. When prompte d, do one of the fol lowing: •P r e s s OK to print al l DPOF-tagged photos. The device p rints all DPOF-ta gged photos.
To print a n index sheet 1. Insert a memory card into the appropriate slot on the device. 2. Press the Photo button. 3. Press the right arrow key repeatedly to select Index Sheet . 4. Press OK . Save photos to your computer After you take phot os wit h you r digit al ca mera, you can print them imm ed iat el y o r save them to your computer.
To turn on Red Eye Removal 1. Insert your memory card into the appropriate slot on the device. 2. When prompted, press the Photo bu tt on repeatedly until t he Red Eye Remov a l is displayed .
6F a x You can use the device to send and rece ive faxes, including color faxes. You can schedule faxes to be se nt at a later time and set up spe ed-dials to send faxes q uickly and easily to frequently used numbers.

you can send the fax directly to t he fax machine when you hear t he f ax tones from the receiving fax machine. To send a fax manually from a phone 1. Load your orig ina ls. For additio nal information, see Load originals . 2. Dial the numb er by usi ng t he keypad on the phon e th at is connected to the d evice.
3. When you he ar th e d ial tone, enter th e nu mbe r by using the keypad on the device control p an el. 4. Follow any prompts that might occur. TIP: If you are using a calling card to se nd a fax an.
To schedule a fax fr om the d evice control panel 1. Load your orig ina ls. For additio nal information, see Load originals . 2. In the Fax area, press Fax repeatedl y until How to Fax appears. 3. Press until Send Fax Later appears, and then press OK .
Send a fax to multiple recipients from the device co ntro l panel You can send a fax to m ultiple recipien ts at once by grouping individu al speed dial ent ries into group spe ed dial entries. To send a fax to multiple recip ients using gr oup speed dial 1.
HP recommends that you use only color originals for color faxi ng. To send a color orig ina l fax from the device control panel 1. Load your orig ina ls. For additio nal information, see Load originals . 2. In the Fax area, press Fax . The Enter Number prom pt appears.
The followi ng resolution sett ings are availab le for sending f axe s: Fin e , Very Fi ne , Photo , and Standard . The def ault setting is Fine . • Fine : provides high-quality text suitable for fa xing most documents. This is the default setting. When sen di ng f axes in color, the device always u s es t he Fin e setting.
3. Enter the fax number by using the keypad, press Speed Dial or a one-touch speed dial button (some models only) to select a speed dial, or press Redial/Pau se to redial the last number diale d. 4. In the Fax area, press Fax repeatedl y until Lighter / Da rker appears.
If you receive a legal-size fax and the device is not currentl y set to use legal-size paper, the device reduces the fax so that it fits on the pape r that is loa ded. I f you h ave disabled the Automatic Reduction feat ure, the device prints th e fax on two pages.
5. When you hear fax tones from a sending fax machine, do the following: a . Press START FAX Black or START FAX Color on the dev ice contr ol panel. b . When prompted, select Fax Receive . NOTE: Depending on your country/region , t he device might receive the fax automatically w he n you hear fax tones from the se nding fax machine.
3. Press the right arrow button to selec t On , On Error On ly , or Off . 4. Press OK . Reprint received faxes from memory If you set the Backup Fax R eception mode to On , the received f axes are stored in memory, whether the device has an error condition or not.

NOTE: If you press START FAX Color but the sender sent t he fax in black and white, the device prints the fax in black and white. Forward fa xes to another number You can set up the device to forward your faxes to another fax numb er.
To set the paper size for received f axes from the de vic e c ontr ol panel 1. Press Setup . 2. Select Basic Fax Setup and then select Fax Paper Size .
Set the junk fax mode By default, Bloc k Junk Fax mode is turned On . If you do not subscribe to a caller ID service through your phon e pro v ide r, or d o no t want to use t his feature, you can turn off this setting. To set the junk fax mode Ÿ Press the Junk Fax Blocker button, select the Block J unk Fax option, and th en select On or Off .
Remove numbers from the junk fax list If you no longer want to block a fax number, you can remove a nu mbe r from yo ur ju nk fax list. To remo ve number s from the list of junk fax number s 1. Press Setup . 2. Press Basic Fax Setup , and then press Junk F ax Blocker Setup .
NOTE: Fax to PC and Fax to Mac are avail able for receiv ing black-and-whi te faxe s only. Color faxes are prin te d instead of being sa ved to the comput er.
Modify Fax to PC or Fa x to Ma c se ttings You can update the Fax to PC sett ings from your comput er at any time from the Fax settings page in the Solution Cente r. You can turn off Fa x to PC and disable prin ting faxes from the device control panel.

To set the answer mode to manual or automatic via the embedded Web s erv er 1. Open the embedd ed Web server, click the Settings tab, and then click Ba sic Fax Setup in the left pane. 2. Select On or Off in the Auto Answer drop-down menu in t he Other Basic Fax Settings section.
If you do not ha ve a d isti nctive ring service, use the de fault ring patte rn, which is All Rings . NOTE: The HP fax cannot receive f axes whe n the main phone number is off t he hook. To change t he a nswer ring pa ttern for disti ncti ve r ing v ia t he dev ic e contr ol p anel 1.
To set the dial type via the device control panel Ÿ Press Setup , press Basic Fax Setup , and then use the Tone or Pulse Di aling option. To set the dial type vi a the embedd ed Web server 1. Click the Settings tab, and t hen click Basic Fax Setup in the left pane.

Test fax setup You can test your fax setup to check the status of the devi ce and to make sure it is set up properly for faxing. Perform this t est a fte r you have completed set ting up t he device for faxing.
By default, the device is set to print a report on ly if there is a proble m sending or receiving a fax. A confirmation message that indicates whether a fax was su ccessfully sent appears briefly on the control-panel di splay after each transaction.
To enable fax confi rmation via the embedded We b se rve r 1. Click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced F ax Setup in the left pane. 2. Make a selection in the Fax Confirmation drop-down menu.

Print a Caller ID History Report Use the following proced ure to print a list of Call er ID f ax numbers. To print a Caller ID History Report 1. Press Setup , select Printer Report , and then select Calle r ID Hi story Report . 2. Press OK . Cancel a fax You can cancel a fax you are sending or re ceiv ing at any time.
7 Copy You can produce high-quality color and grayscale copies on a variety of paper types and sizes. NOTE: To make a copy using an HP Office jet 6500 (E709d) or HP Officejet 6500 (E709r), the HP All-in-One must be connect ed t o a computer, t he computer must be turned on and you mu st be logged on.
To make a copy 1. Make sure you have pa per l oaded in the input tray. 2. Place your original face do wn on the scanner gla ss or load originals in the ADF. For more inform ation, see Load origin als . 3. Do one of the fo ll owin g: • Press START COPY Black or START PC COPY Black to start a black-and-white copy job.
Set the copy paper size You can set the paper size on the device. The paper size you select sh ould mat ch what is loaded in your i nput tray. NOTE: If you are using an HP Of ficejet 6500 (E70 9d) or HP Office jet 6500 (E709 r), this setting is not available.
NOTE: If you are using an HP Officejet 650 0 (E709d) or HP Off icejet 6500 (E709r), this setting is not ava ilable. To determin e the model you have, see Finding the d evice model number . To change the copy qua lity from the device control pa nel 1. Make sure you have pa per l oaded in the input tray.
4. Press until Full Page 91% appears, and t hen press OK . 5. Press START COPY Black or START PC COPY Black , or START COPY Color or START PC COPY Color . Copy a legal-size document onto letter paper You can use the Legal > Ltr 72% setti ng to reduce a copy of a legal-si ze document to a size that fi ts onto letter paper.
4. Do one of the fo ll owin g: • Press to darke n the copy. • Press to lighten the copy. 5. Press START COPY Black or START COPY Color . Enhance light areas of your copy You can use Photo enhancement s to e nhance light colors that mig ht otherwise appear white.
To collate copi es fr om the control panel 1. Load originals in the ADF. For more inform ati on , see Loa d original s . 2. Press Copy repeatedly until Collate appears.

To set up the device with a separate fax line 1. Using the phone cord sup plied in the box with the device, conn ect one end to your telephone wall jack, then connect the other en d to the port labeled 1-LINE o n the back of the devi ce. To set up the devi ce w ith DSL 1. Obtain a DSL fi lter from your DSL provide r. 2. Using the phon e cord suppl ied in the box with t he d evice, connect one end to th e open port on the DSL filt er, and then conn ect the other end to the port labe led 1-LINE on the back of the device.
• If you are using a PBX phone system, dial the number for an outside line before dialing the fax number. • Make sure you use the supplied cord to co nnect f rom the telephone wa ll jack to the device. If you do not, you might not be ab le to fax successfully.
3. Change the Distin ctive Ring setting to match the patter n that the te lephone company assigned t o your fax number. NOTE: By default, the device is set to answe r all ring patterns.

NOTE: If you have a computer dial-up mode m, your computer dial-u p modem shares the phone line wit h the devi ce. You will not be able to u se bot h your modem an d the device simultan eo usly. For example, you can not use the device for faxing while you are using your computer dial-up modem to send an e-mail or access the Internet.
4. If your modem software i s set to re ceive faxes to your compute r automatical ly, turn off that setting. NOTE: If you do not turn off the a ut oma tic f ax reception setting in your modem software, the device will not be able to receive faxes. 5. Turn on the Auto Answer setting.
NOTE: You will need to purchase a paral lel splitter. A parallel sp litter has one RJ-11 port on the front and two RJ-11 ports on th e back. Do not use a 2–line pho ne splitter, a serial splitter, o r a pa rallel splitter which has two RJ-11 ports on the front an d a plug on the back.

4. Follow the onscreen instructions to change fro m an Ethernet co nnection to a wire less connec tion. 5. After you finish changing the sett in gs, disconnect the Ethernet ca bl e.
Uninstall and reinstall the software If your installat ion is incomplete, or if you connected the USB cable to the computer bef ore prompted by the software install ati on screen, you might need to uninstall and then reinstall the soft w are. Do not simply dele te t he device application files from your computer.
4. Restart your computer. NOTE: It is impor tant that y ou disco nnec t the device before restarting your computer. Do not connect the device to your computer until after you have reinstalled the software. 5. Insert the device Starter CD into your comp uter's CD-ROM drive and then start the Setup program.

3. Press the tab on the front of t he ink cartridg e to release it, and t hen remove it from the slot. 4. Remove the ne w ink cartri dge from its packaging by pulling the orange pull-tab straight back to remove the plastic wrap from the ink cartridge.
5. Twist the orange cap t o sna p it off. 6. Using the colored sh ap ed icons for help, slid e t he ink cartridge into th e e mpty slot until it clicks into place and is seated firmly in the slot. CAUTION: Do not lift the latch h and le on the print carriage t o install the ink cartridges.
Clean the sensor NOTE: This procedure is only necessary wh en you see an error message relating to the ink cartridges. For more in fo rmation about error messages, see Errors . Clean the sensor. If the problem is not resolv ed, printing can continue, but the ink system behavior might change.
4. Locate the sensor inside the product. The sensor is a square, black plastic part sl ig htly larger than a p enci l eraser, just to the left of th e print carriag e. 5. Wipe the sensor with a dry swab or lint-free cloth. 6. Close the ink cartri dge access door, and check if the error me ssage ha s been resolved.
The print carriage moves to the cent er of the product. NOTE: Wait until th e p rint carriage stop s moving before proc eed in g. 4. Remove all of th e ink cartridges and pla ce the m on a pi ece of paper with the ink openings poi ntin g up . To remove the in k cartridges a .
6. Install each ink cartridg e in its slot. Pre ss it down until the tab snaps into place. Match the color and ic on on each ink cartridge label to the color and icon on the slot for that ink cartridge. 7. Close the ink ca rtri dge access doo r, and check if the error has bee n resolved.

If the color of any o f th e ba rs is not uniform, fol low t hese steps: 1. If the print er was recently transp ort ed at a high altitud e, t ry a printhead cle aning. 2. If the printer was not recently transported, try printing ano ther Print Quality Diagnostic report.

4. Lift the automatic doc ument feeder mechanism. There is a glass strip under th e automatic document f eeder. 5. Clean the glass strip with a soft cloth or sp onge slightly moistened with a nonabrasive glass cleaner. CAUTION: Do not use abrasives, acetone , benzene, or carbon tetra chloride on the glass, since they can da mage it.

Check the media settings • Make sure you select the correct print quality settings in the printe r driver for the media loaded in t he trays. • Make sure the page settings in the printer driver mat ch the page size of m edia loaded in the tr ay.
Check the media size • Content on a page might be cut of f if the d ocument size is larg er than the m edia tha t you are usin g. • Make sure the media size selected in the pr inter driver match the size of media loaded in the tray.

The pages in my document came out in the wron g order Solution: Print the docum ent in reverse order. When the do cume nt finishes printing, the pages will be in correct ord er. Cause: The print settin gs were set to pri nt the first page of your docume nt first.
Solution 3 : Load the st ack of pa per correctly Solution: Remove t he stack of paper from the in put tray, reload the paper, and then slide the pa per wid th guide inward until it st ops a t the edge of the pape r. For more information, see: Load media Cause: The paper guides were no t positioned correctl y.
Solution 2: Check the layout of the document Solution: Make sure the layou t of the document you a re trying to prin t fits on a paper size supported by the product. To preview the print layout 1. Load the correct pape r size i nto the input tray. 2. Preview y our print job befor e sending it to t he product.

Store specialty me dia in its ori gin al packaging inside a resealable plastic b ag on a flat surface in a cool, dry place. When yo u are ready to print, rem ove only the paper you plan to use imm ediately.
NOTE: For this issue, there is not a proble m with your ink supplies. Therefore, replacing the ink cartri dge s or printhead is not necessary. • Solution 1: Check the paper type • Solution 2: Use .

Solution 2: Check the paper type Solution: HP recommends that you use HP pape rs or any other paper type that is appropriate for the product. Always make sure the paper yo u are printing on is flat. Fo r best results when printing images, use HP Advanced Photo Paper.
Solution 5: Contac t HP s upp ort Solution: Contact HP support for service. Go to: www.hp. com/support . If prompt ed, choose your country/reg ion, and then cl ick Contact HP for information on calling for te chnical support. Cause: There was a prob lem with the print head.
Solution 3: Print the image in a smaller size Solution: Reduce the si ze of the image and then print it. If you are print ing a photo or graphic, and the print size is set too high, it will be blurry or fuzzy when printed. If a digital photo or raster ized graphic has been resized, it can be blurry or fuzzy when printed .
Solutio n 1: Make sure th e pa per is loaded cor rec tly Solution: Make sure tha t th e paper is loaded c or rectly in the input tray. For more information, see: Load m edi a Cause: The paper was not loaded correct ly. If this di d not sol ve the issue , try the next solution.
Solution 2 : Wait while t he ink dries Solution: Wait at least thirty minutes for the in k inside t he product to dry, then try the print job again. Cause: The excess ink in the pro duct needed to dry out. Paper is not picked up from the input tray Try the following solutions to resolve the issue.
Solution 4: Cl ea n the r ollers Solution: Clean the rollers. Make sure you have the f o llowing materi als available: • A lint-free cloth, or an y soft material that will no t come apart or leave fibers. • Distilled, f iltered, or bot tled water (tap wat er might con tain contam inants t hat can damage the ink cartridges).
Cause: Many black print quality problems clear up with the automatic services performed after each print job is finished. Solution 2: Use TrueType or OpenT ype fo nts Solution: Use TrueT ype o r OpenType fonts to ensure t hat the product is able to print smooth f onts.

Take steps to im pr ove the s can quality ƕ Use the gl ass to scan rather than the ADF. ƕ Use high-quality originals. ƕ Place the media correctl y . I f the media is placed incorrectly on the scan ner glass, it might skew, which causes unclear im ages.
Try these first if you are having problems wit h your fax features: • Check the tel ep hone cord. Try using anothe r telephone cord to se e if the problem continues. • Remove othe r equip ment fro m the HP device. Conn ect t he HP device directly to t he wall jack to see if the pro ble m pe rsi sts.
• Make sure you use the phone cord that came with the device. If you d o no t use the supplie d ph one cord to connect from t he t elephone wall jack to the device, you might not be able to send or receiv e faxes. After you plug i n the phone cord that came with t he device, run the fax test again.
The "Phone Cord Connected to Correct Port on Fax" test failed Solution: Plug the pho ne cord into the corre ct port. 1.
