1 Scanner overview This User Guide co vers what you need to kn ow about using your scan ner. • Scanner hardware • Scanner software Scanner hardware 1 Front panel 2 Power save button 3 Document fee.

To switch from Power Save mode to In stant Lamp On mode, sel ect the Enable Instan t Lamp On check box on the Settings tab of the HP Scanner Tools Uti lity.
HP Scanner Tools Utility Use the HP Sca nner Tools Utili ty to configure the list of scan profiles on t he scanner front panel, to create scan profiles that use third -party scanning sof tware, and to fi nd information ab out scanner settin gs, status, and maintenance.
2 Use the scanner The following to pics describe the HP Scanjet scanner as well as how to scan or copy original documen ts. • Load origi nals • Scan and copy Load originals For helpful in formation on loading your documents properly, refer to the following topics.

Load document s 1. Pull up the documen t feeder extensi on and adjust the output tray. 2. Adjust the paper guide s to the width of t he documents. Take care n ot to overtight en the guides, whi ch can re strict paper fe eding.
3. Fan the stack of document pages to ensure that the pa ges do not stick together. Fan the edge t hat will be pointing int o the feede r in one direct ion, and then fan that same edge in the opposite direction . 4. Align the edges of th e documents by tappin g the bottom of t he stack against the table top.
Load cards into the docu ment feeder To load ca rds into the document fe eder, foll ow these ste ps: 1. Place the stack o f cards face down w ith the long di mension paralle l to the paper guides. 2. Adjust the paper g uides to center the origina l. Make sure the pape r guides touch the edges of t he original .
• If you want to change th e copy settings, select Start copy software and then press either th e Scan Simplex ( ) or Scan Duplex ( ) butt on. The HP Co py software st arts on the connected compu ter where you can mo dify copy settings. • You can create scan prof iles that us e t hird-party scanning software.

3 Useful scanner features Experienced docume nt management professio nals might be interest ed in the following scan features. These features are avail able from any do cument TWAIN or ISIS application that allows you to modi fy the scan settings i n its user interface .
For more info rmation, see the HP Smart Document Scan Softwa re Help. Create sc an profile s that use t hird-party scanning software If you have scanning software that you w ant to use with your scann er, you can create profiles that use you r software.
To enable long-page scans in an H P Smart Document Scan Soft ware profile, follow these steps: 1. Open the HP Smart Docum ent Scan Software. 2. Select a scan profile, an d then click Edit .
Filter out color from a document (color dropout) Available color dr opout options depend upon your scanner. • HP Scanjet 7000: You can filt er out a color channe l (red, green, or blue) o r up to three individual co lors. For specific colors, the sensitivit y settin g controls how closely a scanned color must approxim ate the specified color.
3. On the Scan tab of the Profile Settings dialog box, click Advanced Settings . 4. On the More tab of t he Proper ties dialog box: • Clear the Enable check box (located und er the Misfeed (Multipick) D etection heading) to disable this fe ature. • Select the Enable check box to enable this f eature.

3. Clean the glass by u sing a soft, lint-free cl oth that has been spraye d with a mild glass cleaner. CAUTION: Use only glass cleane r to clean the scanner glass. Avoid cle aners that contai n abrasives, ac etone, benzene, and carbon t etrachloride, all of which can damage the scanner glass.
3. Place the unfolde d cloth into the do cument feeder. 4. Press the Tools ( ) button to open th e Scanner Tools Utility. Click th e Maintenance tab. 5. Click the Clean button to fe ed the cloth throug h the scanner. CAUTION: Wait two minutes for the components to dry before proceedi ng to the next step.
To clean the rollers, fo llow these ste ps: 1. Press the Power switch to the of f position, and t hen disconnect the U SB cable and power supply from the scanner. 2. Open the scanner hatch. 3. Open the roller cover on t he inside of the scann er hatch and lift the ro ller up.
5. Reinsert the roller into the housi ng. 6. Open the door on the inside of the sca nner, open the rolle r covers, and then remove the rollers. 7. Remove any visib le lint or dust from the rollers and their housin g using eit her compressed air or a clean lint-free cloth mo istened with iso propyl alcohol.
9. Clean the non-rem ovable rollers using eithe r compressed air or a clea n lint-free cloth moistened wi th isopropyl alcohol. 10. Close the scanner hatch, and then reconnect the U SB cable and power supply to t he scanner. 11. Press the Power switch to the on position, and then upd ate the scanner maintenan ce history: a .
3. Close the scanner hatch, and then reconnect the USB cabl e and power supply t o the scanner. 4. Update the scan ner maintenance hi story: a . Press the Tools ( ) butt on on the scanner f ront panel t o open on the H P Scanner Tools Utility. b .I n t h e Recor d Replacement section of the Main tenance tab, click R ecord Replacem ent .

Error Code Description Paper Error The document feeder cannot pick up the paper or the paper is jammed. Follow these steps to resolve the err or: 1. Remove the paper from the document feeder. 2. Sort through the stack to make sure the sheets ar e not stuck together.
Scanner installation troubleshooting • Check the cables • Uninstall and th en reinstall t he HP Scanjet ut ilities Check the cables Cable type Action Power cable The power cable is connected between the scanner and a power outlet.
Scanner initialization or hardware problems • Check the USB connection • Check that the scann er has power • Reset the scanner • Scanner has stopped working corre ctly Check the USB connectio n Check the physical conne ction to the scanner. • Use the cable that was include d with the scann er.
If the problem persists a fter verifying the above items, fo llow these steps: 1. Press the Power switch to the off positio n, and then disconnect th e power cable from the scanner. 2. Wait 3 0 second s. 3. Reconnect the power cab le to the scanner, the n press the Power switch to the on position.
5. Use the Add/Remove tool (in Windows Vista, the Programs and Features tool) from the Control Pan el to uninstall the follo wing applicatio ns: • HP Scanjet 7000 Docum ent ISIS/TWAIN or HP Scanjet 5000 Documen t ISIS/ TWAIN • HP Scanjet 7000 Uti lities or HP Sc anjet 5000 Ut ilities 6.
NOTE: The scanner lamp does no t turn off when pa per is in the document feeder, when in Instant Lamp On mode, and whe n Energy Savings is turned off. Scanner doe s not scan r ight away Make sure the scanner hat ch is closed, and that the power swit ch on the back of the scanner is in the on position.

The bottom of the scan ned image is cut off By default, the scanning soft ware can scan media that is up to 356 mm (14 in) long. For longer pages, the end of the docum ent is not included in the scanned i mage. Verify that you have specified an appropriat e page si ze in the scanning software.
Clear jams from the s canner paper path To clear a paper j am: 1. Open the scanner hatch. 2. Remove the or iginals or any obstructi ons from the paper path. 3. Remove any d ebris (paper , st aples, clips, etc.) that you see in the paper pat h. 4. Close the scanner h atch until it snaps into place.
