Load media This section provides inst ructions for loading medi a into the device. To load Tray 1 (main tray) 1. Lift the output tray. 2. Insert the media print- side down along the right of the tray. Make sure the stack of media aligns wi th the right and back ed ges of the tray, and does not exce ed the line marking in the tray.

Change setting s (Mac OS X) To change the settings 1. On the File menu, click Page Setup . 2. Change the settin gs that you want (such as paper size), and then click OK . 3. On the File menu, click Print to open the print driver. 4. Change the setting s that you want (such as media type), and th en click OK or Print .
To print automatically on both si des of a page (Windows) 1. Load the appropri ate media. For more i nformation, see Gui delines for printing on both sides of a page and Load media . 2. Make sure the duplexe r is properly installed. For more i nformation, see Install the duplexer .
TIP: To print Web pag es correctly, you might need to set your pri nt orientation to Landscape . Cancel a print job You can cancel a print jo b using one of the follo wing methods. Device control panel: Press ( Cancel button). This cle ars the job that the device is currently proce ssing.
4 Scan You can scan originals a nd send them to a variet y of destinations, such as a folder on the network o r on a specific computer. You can use the device control panel, the HP software, a nd TWAIN-compliant or WIA-co mpliant programs on a comput er.
Scan an origin al to a computer You can send a scan to a comput er connected directly to the device or a computer on the network. Yo u can also send a scan to a progra m installed on a compute r. To send a scan to a computer from the HP Solution Center 1.
Scan from a TWAIN-complia nt or a WIA-compliant program The device is TWAIN-compl aint and WIA-compli ant and wo rks with programs that supp ort TWAIN-compliant and WIA-compliant scanning devices.
For more informatio n, see the onscreen help t hat came with the scanning software. Edit a scanned documen t using optical character recognition (O CR) software You can use OCR softwar e to import scanned text into your pref erred word-processing program for editing.
5 Work with memory devices The device comes with a memo ry card reader that can read several types o f digital camera memory cards. You can print an index sheet, w hich shows thumbnail views of photos that are st ored on a memory card.

To print camera-selec ted photos using the DPOF standard 1. Insert your memory card int o the appropriate slot on the de vice. 2. When prompte d, do one of the follow ing: •P r e s s OK to print all DPOF-tagge d photos. The device p rints all DPOF-tagge d photos.
To print an index sheet 1. Insert a memory card in to the appropriate slot on the device. 2. Press the Photo button. 3. Press the right arrow ke y repeatedly to select Index Sheet . 4. Press OK . Save photos to your computer After you take photos w ith your digital camera, you can print the m immediately or save them to your com puter.
To turn on Red Eye Removal 1. Insert your memory card int o the appropriate slot on the de vice. 2. When prompted, press the Photo button repeated ly until the Red Eye Re moval is displ ayed.
6F a x You can use the device to send and receiv e faxes, including co lor faxes. You can schedule faxes to be sent a t a later time and set up speed-dials t o send faxes quickly and easily to frequent ly used numbers.

3. When you hear th e dial tone, enter the nu mber by using the keypad on the device control pane l. 4. Follow any prompts t hat might occur. TIP: If you are using a calling card to sen d a fax and yo.
To schedule a fax from the device control panel 1. Load your origina ls. For additional information, see Lo ad originals . 2. In the Fax area, press Fax repeatedly unt il How to Fax appear s. 3. Press until Send Fax Later appears, and t hen press OK .
Send a fax to multiple recip ients from the device contro l panel You can send a fax to mult iple recipients at once by g rouping individual spe ed dial entries into group spe ed dial entries. To send a fax to multiple recipients using group spe ed dial 1.
HP recommends tha t you use only color originals for color faxi ng. To send a color origina l fax from the device control pa nel 1. Load your origina ls. For additional information, see Lo ad originals . 2. In the Fax area, press Fax . The Enter Number prompt appears.
The followi ng resolution sett ings are available fo r sending faxes: Fine , Very Fine , Photo , and Standard . The def ault setting is Fine . • Fine : provid es high-quality text su itable for faxing most do cuments. This is the de fault setting. When sendi ng faxes in color, the device always u ses the Fine settin g.
3. Enter the fax numbe r by using the keyp ad, press Speed Dial or a one-touch speed dial button (some models only) to select a speed di al, or press Redi al/Pause to redial the last number dialed. 4. In the Fax area, press Fax repeatedly unt il Lighter / Da rker appears.
If you receive a legal-size f ax and the device is not currentl y set to use legal-size paper, the device reduces t he fax so that it fits on the pape r that is loaded. If you have disabled the Automatic Reduction feat ure, the device prints the f ax on two pages.
5. When you hear fax tones from a sending fax machine, do the f ollowing: a . Press START FAX Black or START FAX Color on the device control pan el. b . When prompted, select Fax Receive . NOTE: Depending on your cou ntry/region, the device might receive t he fax automatically whe n you hear fax tones from the se nding fax machine.
3. Press the right arrow butto n to selec t On , On Error Only , or Off . 4. Press OK . Reprint received fa xes from memory If you set the Backup Fax R eception mode to On , the received faxes are stored in memory, whet her the device has an error condition o r not.

To set the paper size for re ceived faxes from the devic e control panel 1. Press Setup . 2. Select Basic Fax Setup and then select Fax Paper Size . 3.
Set the junk fax mode By default, B lock Junk Fax mode is t urned On . If you do not subscribe to a caller ID service through your phone pro vider, or do not want to use t his feature, you can turn off this setting. To set the junk fax mode ▲ Press the Junk Fax Blocker button, select the Block Junk Fax option, and then select On or Off .
Remove numb ers from the junk fax list If you no longer want to blo ck a fax number, you can remove a number from yo ur junk fax list. To remove numbers fr om the lis t of junk fax numbers 1. Press Setup . 2. Press Basic Fax Setup , and then press Junk Fax Blo cker Setup .
NOTE: Fax to PC and Fax to Mac are avail able for receiving black-and-white fa xes only. Color faxes are printed instead of being saved to the comput er.
Modify Fax to PC or Fax to Ma c settings You can update the Fax to PC settings from your computer at any time from the Fax settings page in the Solution Cente r. You can turn off Fa x to PC and disable printing faxes from the device control panel. To modify settings from th e device control panel 1.

To set the answer mode to manual or automatic via the embedded Web server 1. Open the embedded Web server, click the Settings tab, and then click Basic Fa x Setup in the left pane. 2. Select On or Off in the Auto Answer drop-down me nu in the Other Basic Fax Settings section.
If you do not have a d istinctive ring service, use th e default ring patte rn, which is All Rings . NOTE: The HP fax cannot receive faxes w hen the main phone number is off the hook. To change the answer ring pat tern for distinctive ring via the device co ntrol panel 1.
To set the dial type via the device control panel ▲ Press Setup , press Basic Fax Setup , and then use the Tone or Pul se Dialing option. To set the dial type via the embedded Web server 1. Click the Settings tab, and then click Basic Fax Setup i n the le ft pane.

Test fax setup You can test your fax setup to check the status of the devi ce and to make sure it is set up properly for faxing. Perf orm this test after you have com pleted setting up the device for faxing.
By default, th e device is set to print a report only if the re is a problem sen ding or receiving a fax. A confirmation messa ge that indicate s whether a fax was su ccessfully sent appears briefly on the control -panel display after ea ch transaction.
To enable fax confi rmation via the embedded Web serve r 1. Click the Settings tab, and then click Adv anced Fax Setup in the left pane. 2. Make a selection in the Fax Confirmation drop-down menu.
To view the fax log from the HP photo and imagin g software 1. At the computer, open the HP photo an d imaging soft ware. For more info rmation, see Use the HP ph oto and imaging softwar e . 2. See the onscreen Help for the HP photo and im aging software for furth er instructions.
Print a Caller ID History Report Use the followi ng procedure to print a list of Caller ID fax numbers. To print a Caller ID History Report 1. Press Setup , select Printer Repor t , and then select Caller ID Histor y Report . 2. Press OK . Cancel a fax You can cancel a fax you are send ing or receivin g at any time.
7 Copy You can produce high-qua lity color and grayscale copies on a variety of paper types and sizes. NOTE: To make a copy using an HP Off icejet 6500 (E709d) or HP Offi cejet 6500 (E709r), the HP All-in-O ne must be connected to a comp uter, the computer must be turned on and you mu st be logged on.
To make a copy 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the input tray. 2. Place your original face down on the scanne r glass or load originals in t he ADF. For more informat ion, see Load original s . 3. Do one of the fo llowing: • Press START COPY Black or START PC COPY Black to start a black-and-white copy job.
Set the copy paper size You can set the paper size on the device. The paper size you select shou ld match what is loaded in your input tray. NOTE: If you are using an HP Officejet 6500 (E709d) or HP Officejet 6500 (E709r), this setting is no t available.
NOTE: If you are using an HP Officejet 6500 (E709d) or HP Officejet 6500 (E7 09r), this setting is not available. To de termine the model you have, see Finding the d evice model number . To change the copy qua lity from the device control pa nel 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the input tray.
4. Press until Full Page 91% appears, and then press OK . 5. Press START COPY Black or START PC COPY Black , or START COPY Color or START PC COPY Color . Copy a legal-size document onto letter paper You can use the Legal > Ltr 72% setting to reduce a copy of a legal-size docu ment to a size that fits onto l etter pape r.
4. Do one of the fo llowing: • Press to darken the copy. • Press to lighten the copy. 5. Press START COPY Black or START COPY Color . Enhance light area s of your copy You can use Ph oto enhancements to e nhance light colors that might otherwise appe ar white.
To collate copi es from the control pane l 1. Load originals in th e ADF. For more information, see Load ori ginals . 2. Press Copy repeatedly until Collate appears.

To set up the device with a separate fax line 1. Using the phone cord supplied in the box with th e device, connect one end to your telephone wa ll jack, then connect the other end to the port labeled 1-LINE o n the back of the device. NOTE: You might need to connect the supplied phone cord to the adapter provided for your c ountry/region.
To set up the devi ce with DSL 1. Obtain a DSL fi lter from your DSL prov ider. 2. Using the p hone cord supplied in the box w ith the device, connect one end to the open port on the DSL filter, and then connect th e other end to the port labeled 1-LI NE on the back of the device.
• If you are using a PBX phone system, dial the number for an outside line before dialing the fax number. • Make sure you use the suppl ied cord to connect from the telepho ne wall jack to the device. If you do not , you might not be able to fax successfully.
3. Change the Distinctive Ring setting to match the patt ern that the telephone company assigned t o your fax number. NOTE: By default, the device is set to answer all ring patterns.
To set up the device with a shar ed voice/fax line 1. Using the phone cord supplied in the box with th e device, connect one end to your telephone wa ll jack, then connect the other end to the port labeled 1-LINE o n the back of the device. NOTE: If you have a comp uter dial-up modem, your comp uter dial-up mode m shares the phone line wit h the device. You will not be able to use both your modem and the device simultaneo usly. For example, you can not use the device for faxing while you are using yo ur computer dial-u p modem to send an e-mail or access the Inte rnet.
4. If your m odem softwa re is set to receive faxe s to your comp uter autom atically, t urn off that setting. NOTE: If you do not turn off the aut omatic fax reception setting in your modem software, the d evice will not be able to receive faxes. 5. Turn on the Auto Answer setting.
NOTE: You will need to purchase a paral lel splitter. A parallel spli tter has one RJ-11 port on the front and two RJ-11 ports on the back. Do n ot use a 2–line phone splitte r, a serial splitter, or a parallel split ter which has two RJ-11 ports on t he front and a plu g on the back.
There are two d ifferent ways to set u p the device with your comp uter based on the number of phone port s on your computer. NOTE: Not all firewal ls require you to differentia te between incoming a nd outgoing ports, but some do. Another common probl em is that HP software is not recogn ized as a trusted device by your firewall to a ccess the network.
4. Follow the onscree n instructions to change from an Ethernet connection t o a wireless connecti on. 5. After you finish chan ging the settings, disco nnect the Ethernet cable.
Uninstall and reinstall the software If your installat ion is incomplete, or if you connected the USB cable to the computer b efore prompted by the software installation screen, you might need to uninstall and then reinstall the softw are. Do not simply delete t he device application fil es from your computer.
4. Restart your computer. NOTE: It is important tha t you disconnect the device bef ore restarting your computer. Do not connect the device to your computer un til after you have reinstalled t he software. 5. Insert the d evice Starter CD into yo ur computer's CD-ROM drive and then star t the Setup program.

3. Press the tab on the front of t he ink cartridge to release it, and then remove it from the slot. 4. Remove the new ink cartridge from its packaging by pulling the orange pul l-tab straight back to remove the plastic wrap from the ink cartridg e.
5. Twist the orange cap t o snap it off. 6. Using the colored shaped icons for help, slide the ink cartridge into the empty slot until it clicks into pl ace and is seated firmly in the slot. CAUTION: Do not lift the latch h andle on the print carria ge to install the ink cartridges.
Clean the sensor NOTE: This procedure is only necessary when you see an error message relating to the ink cartridges. For more in formation about error messages, see Errors . Clean the sensor. If the problem is not resolv ed, printing can continue, but the ink system behavior might change.
4. Locate the sensor in side the product. The sensor is a square, bl ack plastic part slig htly la rger than a pencil erase r, just to the left of the print carriage. 5. Wipe the sensor with a dry swab or lint-free cloth. 6. Close the ink cartri dge access door, and check if the error message ha s been resolved.
The print carria ge moves to the center of the product . NOTE: Wait until the p rint carriage stops moving before proceedin g. 4. Remove all of the ink cartridges and pla ce them on a piece of pape r with the ink openings point ing up. To remove the in k cartridges a .
6. Install each ink cartridge in its slot. Press it down until the t ab snaps into place. Match the color and icon on each ink cart ridge label to the color and icon on the slot for that ink cartridge. 7. Close the ink cartri dge access door, and check if the error has been resolved.

Preventing the prob lem that causes ragged ba rs on the Print Quality Diagn ostic report: • Avoid leaving opened i nk cartridges outside of the printer for an extended pe riod of time. • Wait until a ne w cartridge is ready to be i nstalled before removing an o ld ink cartridge.
If the color of any of th e bars is not uniform, fol low these steps: 1. If the print er was recently transported a t a high altitude, t ry a printhead cleani ng. 2. If the printer wa s not recently transport ed, try printing anoth er Print Quality Diagnostic report.

Check the media size • Content on a pag e might be cut off if th e document size is larger t han the media tha t you are usin g. • Make sure the media size selected in the printer driver match the size of media loaded in the tray.

Solution 7: Clear the p aper jam Solution: Clear t he paper jam and remove any torn paper that remai ns in the product. For more information, see: Clear jams Cause: The product had a paper ja m. If this did not so lve the issue, try the ne xt solution.
The pages in my document came out in the wrong order Solution: Print the document in reverse order. When the docume nt finishes printing, the page s will be in correct order. Cause: The print setti ngs were set to print the firs t page of your document f irst.
Solution 3: Load the stac k of paper correctly Solution: Remove the stack of paper from the input tray, reload the paper, and then slide the paper w idth guide inward until it stops at the edge of t he paper. For more information, see: Load media Cause: The paper guides were no t positioned co rrectly.
Solution 2: Check the layout of the doc ument Solution: Make sure the layout of the document you are t rying to print fit s on a paper size supported by the product. To preview the print layout 1. Load the correct paper size i nto the input tray. 2. Preview your print job befo re sending i t to the product.

Always make sure the paper you are printing on is flat. For best results w hen printing images, use HP Advanced Ph oto Paper. Store specialty me dia in its original packaging inside a resealable plastic bag on a flat surface in a cool, dry place. When you a re ready to print, remove o nly the paper you plan to use imm ediately.
NOTE: For this issue, there is not a problem with your ink supp lies. Therefore, replacing the ink cartridge s or printhead is not necessa ry. • Solution 1: Check the paper type • Solution 2: Use .

Solution 2: Check the pap er type Solution: HP recommend s that you use HP papers or any other paper type that is appropriate for t he product. Always make sure the paper you are printing on is flat. For best results w hen printing images, use HP Advanced Ph oto Paper.
Solution 5: Contact HP s upport Solution: Contact HP support for service. Go to: www.hp. com/support . If prompted, choose your country/reg ion, and then click Contact HP for information on calling for techni cal support. Cause: There was a problem with the print head.
Solution 3: Print the image in a sm aller size Solution: Reduce the size of the image and t hen print it. If you are printin g a photo or graphic, and t he print size is set too h igh, it will be blurry or fuzzy when printed. If a digital ph oto or rasterized graphic has been resized , it can be blurry or fuzzy when printed.
Solution 1: Ma ke sure the pap er is loaded correctly Solution: Make sure th at the paper is l oaded corre ctly in the inp ut tray. For more information, see: Load medi a Cause: The paper w as not loaded correctly. If this di d not solve the issue, try the n ext solution.
Solution 2 : Wait w hile the in k dries Solution: Wait at lea st thirty minutes for the ink i nside the product to dry, then try the print job again. Cause: The excess ink in the product needed to dr y out. Paper is not picked up from the input tray Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue.
Solution 4: Clea n the rollers Solution: Clean the roller s. Make sure you have the f ollowing materials avai lable: • A lint-free cloth, or any soft material that will not come apart or leave fibers. • Distilled, f iltered, or bottled w ater (tap water mig ht contain contam inants that ca n damage the ink cartridges).
Cause: Many black print quality problems cl ear up with the automa tic services performed after each pri nt job is finished. Solution 2: Use TrueTy pe or OpenType fonts Solution: Use Tr ueType or OpenType fonts to en sure that the product is abl e to print smooth f onts.
The product prin ts slowly Try the following sol utions if the product is printi ng very slowly. • Solution 1: Use a lower print quality set ting • Solution 2 : Check the ink levels • Solution 3: Conta ct HP support Solution 1: Use a lower print quality setting Solution: Check the print quality setting.

Copy defects are apparent • Vertical white or fade d stripes The media might not meet Hewlett- Packard media specificat ions (for example, th e media is too moist or too roug h). See Select print media for more information. • Too light or dark Try adjusting the con trast and copy-quality set tings.

Take steps to impr ove the scan quality ◦ Use the gla ss to scan rather than the ADF. ◦ Use high-quali ty originals. ◦ Place the media correctl y. If the media is placed inco rrectly on the scanner glass, it might skew, which cau ses unclear images.
Try these first if you are having problems with your fax feat ures: • Check the telep hone cord. Try using another tel ephone cord to see if the problem continues. • Remove other equ ipment from the HP device. C onnect the HP device directl y to the wall jack to see if the pro blem persists.
• Make sure you use the phone cord that came with the device. If you do not use the supplied ph one cord to connect from t he telephone wall jack to the device, you might not b e able to send or r eceive faxes. After yo u plug in the ph one cord that came with the device, run the fax test again.
The "Phone Cord Conn ected to Correct Port on Fax" test failed Solution: Plug the phone cord into the corre ct port. 1. Using the ph one cord supplied i n the box with the d evice, connect one end to your telephone wa ll jack, then connect the other end to the port labeled 1-LI NE on the back of the device.

The "Fax Line Condi tion" test failed Solution: • Make sure you connect the device to an anal og phone line or you wi ll not be able to send or receive f axes. To check if your ph one line is digital , connect a regular analog phone to the line and listen for a dial tone.
You might need t o connect the supplied phone cord to t he adapter provided for your countr y/region. Solution: Other eq uipment that uses the sam e phone line as the device might be in use. Make sure exten sion phones (phones on the same phone line, but not connected to the device) or o ther equipment are not in use or o ff the hook.

• If the device shares the same pho ne line with a DSL service, the D SL modem might not be pro perly grounded. If the D SL modem is not properly grou nded, it can create noise on t he phone line. Phon e lines with poor sound quality (noise) can cause faxing proble ms.
• If you are sending a fax manually from your phone that i s connected directly to the device, you must use the keypad o n the telephone to send the fax. You ca nnot use the keypad on the device control pan el. NOTE: If using a serial-type phone system , connect your phone to the port labeled 2- EXT.
◦ Disconnect the answ ering machine and then try receivin g a fax. If faxing is successful without the answering machine, the answering machin e might be causing the problem . ◦ Reconnect the a nswering machine and re cord your outgoing me ssage again.
Fax tones are reco rded on my answering m achine Solution: • When you have an answering machine on the same phone line you use for fax calls, try connecting th e answering machine directly to th e device as described in Case I: Shared voice/fax li ne with answeri ng machine .

Clear jams Occasionally, media becomes jammed during a job. Try the following remed ies before you attemp t to clear the jam. • Make sure that you a re printing with media that meets specifications . For more information, see Select p rint media . • Make sure that you are printing with med ia that is not wrinkled, f olded, or damaged.
b . Locate any jam med media inside the device, gra sp it with both hand s and then pull it towards you. c . If the jam is n ot there, push the lat ch on the top of t he duplexer and lower its cover. If the jam is insid e, carefully remove it. Close the cover.
