To connect the HP Phot osmart to a Windows comput er with an ad hoc connection, t he computer must have a wireless network adapte r and an ad hoc prof ile. Create a netwo rk profile for a Windows Vista or Windows XP computer using th e directions below.

5 Paper basics You can load many differe nt types and sizes of paper in t he HP Photosmart, including letter or A4 pa per, photo paper, tra nsparencies, and envelopes.
Recommended papers for printing If you want the best print quality, HP recommends u sing HP papers that are specif ically designed for t he type of project you are printing. Depending on your cou ntry/region, some of these papers might not b e available.

Replace the cartridges To replac e the cartrid ges 1. Check that power is on. 2. Remove cartridge. a . Open cartridge access door. Wait for print carriage to move to center of product. b . Press tab on cartridge, then re move it from slot. 3. Insert new cartridge.

NOTE: Ink level warnings and indicato rs provide estimates for planning purposes only. When you receive a low-ink warning message, consider having a replacement cartrid ge available to avoid possible printin g delays. You do not need to replace the i nk cartridges until p rint quality beco mes unacceptable.
◦ Clean the printh ead, and then print t his diagnostic page ag ain. ◦ If cleaning the printhead does not solve t his print quality issue, replace the cartridge corresp onding to th e streaked bar. NOTE: If replacing the cartridge does not solve this print quality issue, contact HP support for service.

Cause: The product might not have been turned on. If this did not so lve the issue, try th e next soluti on. Solution 2: Set your prod uc t as the defa ult printer Solution: Check your com puter documentation to change your p roduct to be the default printer.

Check cartridges Follow thes e steps. • Step 1: Make sure yo u are using genuine HP in k cartridges • Step 2: Check the ink levels Step 1: Make sure you are usi ng genuine HP ink cartridg es Solution: Check to see if your ink cartridge s are genuine HP ink cartridges.
Step 2: Load the stack of p aper correctly Solution: Remove the stack of p aper from the paper tray, reload the paper, a nd then slide t he paper-width guide inwa rd until it stops at the edge of the paper. NOTE: Do not leave u nused photo paper in t he paper tray.
Step 2: Clean the pri nthead Solution: If the previou s step did not resolve th e issue, try cleaning the printhead. To clean the printhead from the HP Photo smart Software 1. Load letter , A4, or legal unused plain whi te paper into the paper t ray. 2.
To select a print speed or quality 1. Make sure you have paper loa ded in the paper tray. 2. On the File menu in yo ur software application, click Print . 3. Make sure the product is the selected printer. 4. Click the button that opens th e Properties dialog bo x.
Print quality troubleshooting Use this section to so lve these print quality prob lems: • Photo printouts a re hazy, blurry, or have in accurate colo r Photo printouts ar e hazy, blurry, or have i naccurate color Solution: For best photo color qual ity, do not allow printout s to stack on top of photos in the pap er tray.
If this did not so lve the issue, try th e next soluti on. Step 3: Reformat the memo ry card in your digital camera Solution: Check the comp uter screen for an error message telling you th at the images on the mem ory card are corrupted. If the file system on the card is corr upt, reformat the memory card in your digital camera.

Solution 1: Insta ll the HP Photos mart Softwa re Solution: Install the product softw are that came with the product. If it is installed, restart your computer. To install the p roduct software 1. Insert the product CD- ROM into your computer’s CD -ROM drive and then st art the Setup program .
• Unreadable file s. NN files could not be read • Photos not found • File not found • Invalid fil e name • Supported file t ypes for the product • File corrupted Error rea ding or writing the file Solution: Check to see if you have the right folder an d file name.
Cause: There w as not enough available mem ory on your computer to creat e a print preview file . Invalid file name Solution: Make sure that you are not u sing any invalid symbols in the file name. Cause: The file name you entered was invalid. Supported file types for the product The product soft ware only recognizes JPG and TIF im ages.
• Out of disk space • Card access error • Use only one card at a time • Card is inserted incorrectly • Card is damaged • Card is not fully inserte d Memory card error Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue. Solut ions are listed in order, with the most likely solution f irst.
Solution 1: Clos e some applications or r estart your computer Solution: Close all un necessary applicatio ns. This includes appli cations that ru n in the background, such as screensavers and viru s checkers. (If you tu rn off your virus checker, reme mber to tu rn it back on afte r you finish.
Cause: You had inserted the memory card backw ards or upside down. Card is damaged Solution: Reformat your memory card in your camera or format your memory card in a computer by selectin g the FAT format. For more informat ion, see the documentat ion that came with your di gital camera.
Ink is drying Solution: Leave the shee t in the paper tray until the messag e disappears. If it is necessary to remove the p rinted sheet before the me ssage disappears, carefully hol d the printed sheet on the undersi de or the edges, and place it on a flat surface to dry.
Printing cannot occur w ithout one of each t ype of ink cartridge inserted into the correct slot. For more information, see: “ Replace the cartridges” on page 46 Cause: The indicated ink cartridges w ere inserted into the wron g slots. General prin ter error Try the following solu tions.
If it appears that you are using the corre ct ink cartridges, proceed to the next sol ution. For more information, see: •“ Order ink supplie s” on page 48 •“ Replace the cart ridges” on page 46 Cause: The indi cated ink cartridges were not inte nded for use in this product as i t was currently configured.
Cause: The indicated ink cartridges di d not have enough ink to print properly. Ink car tridge prob lem Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue. Solut ions are listed in order, with the most likely solution f irst. If the first solution d oes not solve the problem, conti nue trying the remaining soluti ons until the issue is resolved.
4. Run your finger alon g the top of the ink cartridges t o locate any cartridges that are not snapped completely down. 5. Press down on any cartridges that a re sticking up.
CAUTION: Be careful not to bend th e tab out more than about 1.27 cm (0.5 inches). 11. Reinstall t he ink cartridge. It should now snap down into place. 12. Close the ink cartri dge access door, and check if the error message has gone away. 13. If you still rece ive the error message, turn the pro duct off, and then on a gain.
Cause: The print carriage latch was not closed properly. If this did not solve the issue , try the next solution. Solution 3: Clean the el ectrical contacts Solution: Clean the ca rtridge electrical cont acts. To clean the electrical con tacts 1. Make sure th e product is turned on.
4. Hold the ink cartridg e by its sides with the bottom poin ting up and locate the electrical contacts on the ink cartridge. The electrical contact s are four small rectangles of copper or gold-col ored metal on the bottom of the ink cartridge. 1 Ink window 2 Electrical contacts 5.
9. Close the ink cartri dge door, and check if the e rror message has gone away. 10. If you still rece ive the error message, turn the product off, and then on agai n. If you still receive this me ssage afte r cleaning the cartridge con tacts, you might have a damaged cartridge.
Solution 5: Contact HP suppor t Solution: Contac t HP support for service. Go to: www.hp.com/support . If prompted, choose yo ur country/region, an d then click Contact HP for information on callin g for te chnical support. Cause: The product had a proble m.
If this did not solve the issue , try the next solution. Solution 2: Make sur e the ink cartridges are instal led correctly Solution: Make sure all of the ink cartridges are properly installed. Refer to t he following steps to resolve this error. To make sure the i nk cartridges are prope rly installed 1.
4. Run your finger alon g the top of the ink cartridge s to locate any cartridges that are not sn apped completely down. 5. Press down on any cartrid ges that are sticking up.

HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink cart ridges. Genuine HP ink cartridges are designed a nd tested with HP prin ters to help you easi ly produce great resu lts, time after time. NOTE: HP cannot guaran tee the quality or reliability of non-HP supplies.
Previously used genuine HP cartridge Solution: Check the print quality of the current print job. If it is not satisfactory, try cleaning the printh ead to see if that impr oves the quality. To clean the printhead from the HP Photo smart Software 1. Load letter , A4, or legal unused plain whi te paper into the paper t ray.
3. Remove all of the in k cartridges and place them on a piece of paper with the ink opening poi nting up. 4. Lift the latch ha ndle on the print carriage u ntil it stops.
6. Clean the printhea d. There are three are as of the printhead that need to be cleaned: the p lastic ramps on both sides of the ink nozzle s, the edge between t he nozzles and the electri cal contacts, and the ele ctrical contacts.
b . Use a fresh, lightly dampen ed, lint-free cloth to wi pe any accumulated ink and debris from the edg e between the nozzles and the co ntacts. c . Use a fresh, lightl y dampened, lint-fre e cloth to wipe the plastic ramps on bo th sides of the n ozzles.
c . Wipe the area dry with a dry li nt-free cloth before proceeding to the next step. 8. Make sure the latch ha ndle is raised, and then reinsert the printhe ad. 9. Carefully lower the la tch handle. NOTE: Make sure you lower the latch ha ndle before reinserting the ink cartridges.
11. Close the ink cartrid ge door. Cause: There was a problem with th e printhead. If this did not so lve the issue, try th e next soluti on. Solution 2: Contact HP suppor t Solution: Contac t HP support for service.
5. Click Clean the prin thead . 6. Follow the pro mpts until you are sati sfied with the quali ty of the output, a nd then click Done . There are two stages of cleanin g. Each stage lasts about two min utes, uses one sheet of paper, and use s an increasing amount of ink.
