4 INITIAL PUMP SETUP Import ance of Proper Assembly Proper assembly is essential to operator safety and the reliability of the machine. Any error or oversight made by the person asse mb ling and servicing a machine can result in faulty operation, damage to the machine, or injury to the operator.
5 BEFORE EACH OPERA TION Your safety is your responsibility. A li ttle time spent in preparation will significantly reduce your risk of injury. Read and understa nd this manual. Know what the contro ls do and how to operate them. Familiarize yourself with the pump and its operation before you begin using it.
6 Pump Priming Remove the priming filler cap and completely fill the pump chamber with water before starting the engine. Replace the priming filler cap. NOTICE Operating the pump dry will destroy the pump se al. • Ensure the pump chamber is full of liquid and the su ction hose strainer is submerged in the liquid to be pumped.
7 Check the Engine Oil Level Check the engine oil level with the engine stopped and in a level position. 1. Remove the filler cap/dipstick and wipe it clean. 2. Insert and remove the dipsti ck wit hout screwing it into the fill er neck. Check the oil level shown on the dipstick.
8 OPERA TION For your safety, avoid starting or operating the engine in an en closed area, such as a garage. Your pumps exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide gas, which can collect rapidly in an en closed area and cause illness o r death.
9 S t arting the Engine Remove the priming filler cap and completely fill the pump chamber with water before starting the engine and then replace the filler cap ( page 6 ). 1. T urn the fuel valve to the ON position. 2. Move the choke lever to the CLOSED position.
10 SER VICING YOUR PUMP Proper maintenance is essential for safe, economi cal, and trouble-free operation. It al so helps reduce air pollution. To help you properly care for your pump, the following pages in clude a maintenance schedule, routine in spection procedures, and si mple maintenance procedures using basic hand to ols.
11 Oil Change Change the oil a f ter the first 20 hours of use. Thereafter , change the oil every 100 hours of use. Change the o il more often when used in dusty areas. Drain the used oil while the engine is warm. Warm oil drains quickly and completely.
12 Cleaning A dirty air filter will restrict air fl ow to the carburetor, reducing engine performance. If you operate the pump in very dusty areas, clean the air filter more often than specified in the MAINTENANC E SCHEDULE ( page 10 ). Paper filter: 1.
13 S p ark Arrester (optional p art) The spark arrester must be servi ced every 100 hours to keep i t functioning as designed. Your pump engine i s not factory-equipped with a spark arrester. In some areas, it is illegal to operat e an engine without a spark arre ster.
14 ST ORAGE Proper storage preparation is essent ial for keeping your pump trouble free and looking good. T o help keep rust and corrosion from impairing your pumps function and appearance, and to mak.
15 TROUBLESHOOTING Engine Will Not S t art Loss of Power Low Pump Output Pump Will Not Pump TECHNICAL INFORMA TION Serial Number Locations There are two serial numbers, one for the engine and one for the frame. Record the engine and fram e serial numbers in the space below .
16 High Altitude Operation At high altitudes, the standard carb uretor air-fuel mixtur e will be too rich. Performance will decrease, an d fuel consumption will increase.
17 Air Index An Air Index Information hang tag/la b el is applied to engines certified to an emission durability time period in accordance with th e requirements of the California Air Resources Board. The bar graph is intended to provi de you, our cu sto mer, the ability to compare the emissions performance of available engines.
18 FUEL SYSTEM MAINTENANCE When maintained properly , your Honda pump should provide years of trouble-free opera tion. This includes the fuel system. Howeve r , gasoline can quickly deteriorate, causing st arting or running problem s and , in some cases, damage to t he fuel system.
