5 IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION Operator Responsibility Pump Operati on Refuel With Care PUMP SAFETY Most accidents can be prevented if you follow all instructions in this manual and on the pump. The most common hazards are discussed below, along with the best way to protect yourself and others.
6 PUMP SAFETY Hot Exhaust Carbon Monoxide Hazard The muffler becomes very hot during operation and rem ains hot for a while after stopping the engine. Be careful not to touch the muffler while it is hot. Let the engine cool before transporting the pump or storing it indoors.

9 CONTROLS CONTROLS Fuel Valve Lever Ignition Switch FUEL VALVE LEVER OFF ON ON O O F F F F IGNIT ION SWITCH The fuel valve opens and closes the connection between the fuel tank and the carburetor. The fuel valve lever must be in the ON position for the engine to run.

13 BEFORE OPERATION IS YOUR PUMP READY TO GO? Check the General Condition of the Pump For your safety, and to maximize the service life of your equipment, it is very important to take a few m oments before you operate the pump to check its condition.
14 BEFORE OPERATION Check the Suction and Dischar ge Hoses Check the Engine Check the general conditi on of the hoses. Be s ure the hoses are in serviceable condition before connectin g them to the pump. Remember that the suction hose must be reinforced construction to prevent hose collapse.
15 SAFE OPERATING PRECAUTIONS OPERA TION To safely realize the full potential of this pump, you need a complete understanding of its op eration and a c ertain amount of practice with its controls. Before opera ting the pump for the first time, please review the IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION on page and the chapter titled BEFORE OPERATION .
16 OPERATION PUMP PLACEMENT SUCTION HEAD DISCHARGE HEAD T T O O T T A A L L H H E E A A D D For best pump performance, place the pump near the water level, and use hoses that are no longer than necessary. That w ill enable the pump to produce the greatest output with the least self-priming time.

19 OPERATION STARTING THE ENGINE ON CHOKE LEVER CLOSED THROTTLE LEVER F F U U E E L L V V A A L L V V E E L L E E V V E E R R Move the throttle lever away from the S LOW position about 1/ 3 of the way toward the FAST position. Move the fuel valve lever to the ON position.
20 OPERATION ON STARTER GRIP IGNITION SWITCH D i r e c t i o nt op u l l Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Do not allow the starter gr ip to snap back against the engine.
21 OPERATION SETTING ENGINE SPEED OPEN CHOKE LEVER FAST SLOW THROTTLE LEVER If the choke lever was moved to the CLOSED position to start the engine, gradually move it to the OPEN pos ition as the engine w arms up. After starting the engine, move the throttle lever to the FAST position for self-priming, and check pump output.
22 OPERATION STOPPING THE ENGINE THROTTLE LEVER SLOW IGNITION SWITCH O O F F F F To stop the engine in an emergency, simply turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Under normal condi tions, use the foll owing procedure. Move the throttle lever to the SLOW position.
23 OPERATION FUEL VALVE LEVER OFF Turn the fuel valve lever to the OFF position. After use, remove the pump dr ain plug (see page ), and drain the pump chamber. Remove the filler cap, and flush the pump chamber with clean, fre sh water. Allow the water t o drain from the pump chamber, then reinstall the filler cap and drain plug.
24 SERVICING YOUR P UMP THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTENANCE Maintenance, replacement, or repair of emission control devices and systems may be performed by any engine repair establishment or individual, using parts that ar e ‘‘certified’’ to EPA st andards.

Some of the most important safety precautions follow. However, w e cannot warn you of every conceivable hazard that can ar ise in performing maintenance.

27 SERVICING YOUR PUMP REFUELING MAXIMUM FUEL LEVEL With the engine stopped , remove the fuel tank c ap and check the f uel level. Refill the tank if the fuel level is low. Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive. You can be burned or seriously injured when handling fuel.
28 SERVICING YOUR PUMP FUEL RECOMMENDATIONS Refuel in a well-ventilated area before starting the engine. If the engine has been runnin g, allow it to cool. Refuel ca refull y to avoid spilling fuel. Do not fill the fuel tank above the fuel strainer shoulder.
29 SERVICING YOUR PUMP ENGINE OIL LEVEL CHECK OIL FILLER NECK OIL FILLER CAP/DIPST ICK UPPER LIMIT Check the engine oil level with the engine stopped and in a level position. Remove the oil filler cap/ dipstick and wipe it clean. Inse rt and remove the dips tick witho ut screwing it int o the filler neck .
30 SERVICING YOUR PUMP ENGINE OIL CHANGE OIL LEVEL DRAIN PLUG OIL FILLER CAP/DIPST ICK Drain the used oil while the engine is warm. Warm oil drains quickly and completely. Place a suitable container below the engine to catch the used oil, then remove the oil filler cap/ dipstick and the drain plug.
31 SERVICING YOUR PUMP ENGINE OIL RECOMMENDATIONS AMBIENT TEMPERATUR E Oil is a major factor affecting performance and service li fe. Use 4-stroke automotive detergent oil. Use 4-stroke motor oil t hat meets or exceeds the requirements f or API service category SJ or later (or equivalent).
32 SERVICING YOUR PUMP AIR FILTER INSPECTION AIR CLEANER COVER AIR FILTER WING NUT COVER WASHER GRID Unscrew the wing nut and r emove the air cleaner cover . Check the air filter to be sure it is clean and in good condition. If the air filter is dirty, cl ean it as described on page .
33 SERVICING YOUR PUMP AIR FILTER CLEANING AIR FILTER A dirty air filter will restrict air flow to the carburetor, reducing engine performance. If you operate the pump in very dusty areas, clean the air filter more freque ntly than specif ied in the Maintenance Schedule (see page ).
34 SERVICING YOUR PUMP SEDIMENT CUP CLEANING SEDIMENT CUP O-RING Move the fuel valve lever to the OFF position, then remove the fuel sediment cup and O-ring. Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive. You can be burned or seriously injured when handling fuel.
−− − − 35 SERVICING YOUR PUMP SPARK PLUG SERVICE SPARK PLUG WRENCH SPARK PLUG CAP 0.028 0.031 in (0.70 0.80 mm) In or der to se rvice t he spark plu g, you wi ll need a spa rk plug w rench (commercially available). Incorrect spar k plugs can cause engine damage.
− 36 SERVICING YOUR PUMP After the spark plug seats, tighten with a 13/16-inch spark plug wrench to com press the washer. If reinstalling the used spa rk plug, tighten 1/ 8 1/ 4 turn af ter the spark plug seats. If installing a new spark plug, tighten 1/ 2 turn after the spark plug seats.
＋ − 37 SERVICING YOUR PUMP IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT THROTTLE ST OP SCREW Start the engine outdoors, and allow it to warm up to operating temperature. Dry operation will damage the pump seal. Be sure the pump chamber is filled with water before starting the engine.
38 SERVICING YOUR PUMP SPARK ARRESTER SERVICE (optional equipment) 8 mm NUTS MUFFLER MUFFLER PROTECTOR SPARK ARRESTER SCRE EN 5 mm SELF-TAPPING SCREWS SPARK ARRESTER 4 mm SCREW Your engine is not factory-equipped with a spark arrester. In some areas, it is illegal to o perate a n engine without a spark a rrester.
39 STORAGE STORAGE PREPARATION Cleaning Proper storage preparation i s essential for keeping your pump trouble- free and looking good. The f ollowing steps will help to keep rust and corrosion from impairing your pump’s function and appearance, and will make the engine easier to start when you use the pump again.
40 STORAGE Fuel PUMP DRAIN PLUG Stop the engine, and allow it to cool. Remove the pump drain plug, a n df l u s ht h ep u m pw i t hc l e a n , fresh water.
41 STORAGE Adding a Fuel Stabilizer to Extend Fuel Storage Life FUEL VALVE LEVER OFF When adding a fuel s tabilizer, fill the f uel tank with fresh gaso line. If only partially filled, ai r in the tank will promote f uel deterioration during storage. If you keep a container of gasoline for ref ueling, be sure that it contains only fresh gasoline.
42 STORAGE Draining the Fuel Tank and Carburet or DRAIN BOLT SEDIMENT CUP Place an approved gasoline container below the carburetor, and use a funnel to avoid spilling fuel. Remove the carburetor dr ain bolt and sediment cup, then move the fuel valve lever to the ON position.
− 43 STORAGE Engine Oil STORAGE PRECAUTIONS Align notch o n pulley with hole at t op of cover. Change the engine oil (see page ). Remove the spark plug (see page ). Pour a tablespoon (5 10 cc) of clean engine oil into the cylinder. Pull the starter gri p several times to distribute the oil i n the cylinder.
44 STORAGE REMOVAL FROM STORAGE Place the pump on a level surface. Tilting can cause fuel or oil leakage. With the engine and exhaust system cool, cover the pump to keep out dust. A hot engine and exhaust system can ignite or m elt some materials. Do not use s heet plastic as a dust c over.
45 TRANSP ORTING If the pump has been running, allow the engine to cool for at least 15 minutes before loading the pump on the transport vehicle. A hot engine and exhaust syste m can burn you and can ignite some materials. Keep the pump level when transporting to reduce the possibility of fuel leakage.

49 TECHNICAL & CONSUMER INFORMATION Carburetor Modificati on for High Altitude Operation At high altitude, the standard carburetor air-fuel mixture will be too rich. Performance will decrease, and fuel consumption will increase. A very rich mixture will also f oul the spark plug and cause hard starting.
