1 Use the scanner The following to pics describe the H P Scanjet N9120 scanner as well as how to scan or copy origin al documents. • Scanner overview • Load origina l documen ts • How to scan .
Scanner front pan el buttons Use the butt ons on the scanner fron t panel to start a scan and to config ure some scanner settings. Icon Button name Description 1 Copy By default, print the number of copies cu rrently configured in HP Document Copy. Alternatively, start the scanning software that is assigned to this button.

How to load docume nts 1. Flip up the pape r stop in the output tray that best matches the size of t he documents that you are scannin g. Select the stop posi tion that is clos est to (and beyond) the edge of your documents as th ey come out of the aut omatic document feeder (ADF).
4. Place the stack in the midd le of the input t ray. Load the st ack face up. For fastest scanning, lo ad the stack with th e left edge leading in to the ADF. NOTE: In the scanning sof tware, choose the layout setting that mat ches the orientation of the originals in t he ADF.
Place the original face down on the sca nner glass, as indi cated by the reference mark. NOTE: In the scanning softw are, choose the layout sett ing that mat ches the orientation of the ori ginal on the sca nner glass. How to scan The basic steps for scanning are: 1.

Scan from ISIS- or TWAIN-complia nt scanning softw are 1. Start the scanning soft ware, and then select t he ISIS or TWAIN data source. 2. Select the settin gs that are appropriat e for the document s that you are scannin g. 3. Carry out the appropria te actions to complete the scan.
2 Useful scanner features Experienced documen t management p rofessionals might be interested in the followi ng scan features that are available i n the HP Sm art Document Scan Software. Many of these features are also avai lable from any IS IS- o r TWAIN-comp liant document scanning software t hat allows yo u to modi fy the scan se ttings.
3. In the Profile name box, type the name you want or acce pt the default na me. TIP: You might want to set up the new profile based on a n existing one. To d o so, select the Copy settin gs from pr ofile check box, and then select an existing profile from th e list.
NOTE: HP recommends scanning long pages individual ly at a resolution o f 300 dpi or lower. Filter out color from a document (color dropout) You can filter out a dark ba ckground from the im age content, f or example black text on green paper or red instru ctions on a form.
NOTE: To set the scan background co lor in another scannin g software, navigat e to the ISIS or TWAIN Advanced Se ttings dialog box. On the More tab, sele ct a color from the ADF Background drop-down list.
Scan without reviewing The standard process for using the HP Smart Document Scan Software to com plete your scans is as follows: 1. Scan document pages. 2. Review the scanned d ocument pages in the HP Smart Document Scan Sof tware Scan Progress Wi ndow .
Install or replace a print car tridge in the imprin ter The scanner uses an HP 51 604A print cartridge. You must purchase the print cartrid ge separate ly. 1. Raise the ADF input tray un til it clicks into place. 2. Lift the green l ever slightly, and slide t he imprinter comple tely to the lef t.
4. If you are replacing an empty prin t cartridge, slide it to the right to remov e it from the cartridge stall. 5. Remove the print ca rtridge from its packaging. Pul l the tab to remove the protective tape from the nozzles. 6. Hold the new print cartridg e with the nozzles dow n and slide it into the cart ridge stall.

NOTE: Several paper sizes are indicated in th e imprinter carriage. If you set the imprinter at the posi tion for the paper si ze that you are using, t he imprinter mark is printed abo ut 5 mm (.
1. Place a single page in t he automatic docume nt feeder input tray. 2. Press the Tools ( ) button on the scanner front pane l to open the H P Scanner Tools Utility. Click the Imprin ter tab. 3. In the Cartridge Status section, click Test Imprinter .

If you use the ADF several t imes per week, monthly cl eaning is recommended. Set up a cleaning rout ine that is appr opriate for the scanner. 1. Press the Power switch to the off position, and th en disconnect the USB cab le and power cable from th e scanner.
3. Clean the clea r scanning strip on the scanner bed. Wipe the clear area with a clean, damp, lint-f ree clot h. 4. Close the sca nner lid. 5. Lift the latch on top of the ADF to open the top and side ADF access do ors.
6. Locate the white strip on t he side ADF access door and t he clear scan window i nside the ADF. Wipe b oth of these are as clean with a clean , damp, lint-f ree cloth. 7. Wipe the ADF rollers wi th a clean, damp, lint-free clot h. 8. Wait several minutes fo r the rollers to dry, and th en close the ADF access doors.
To clean the scanner gla ss, follow these step s: 1. Press the Power switch to the of f position, and t hen disconnect the U SB cable and power cable from the scanner. 2. Open the scanner lid. 3. Clean the glass by u sing a soft, lint-free cloth that has been sprayed with a mil d glass cleaner.
3. Clean the fil ter in one of the fo llowing ways: • Use compressed air to b low the debris off of the filter. • Use a vacuum to remove the debris f rom the filter. • Rinse the filter with water. NOTE: If the filter is damaged, repl ace it with a n ew filter.
4. Close all ADF access d oors, and then reconnect th e USB cable and power cable to the scanner. 5. Press the Power swi tch to the on position, and the n update the scanner mainte nance history: a . Press the Tools ( ) button on the scann er front panel to open t he HP Scanner Tools Utility.

LED indications Scanner action or condition The Power LED is lit with a steady green light. The scanner is on and rea dy to scan. The Attention LED blinks green at a medium speed. The Power LED is lit with a steady green light. The scanner is scanning an original.
If the problem pe rsists after verifyi ng the above items, try the following: 1. Press the Power switch to the off position, and then disconnect the po wer cable from the scanner. 2. Wait 30 seconds. 3. Reconnect the powe r cable to the scanner, and t hen press the Power switch to the on position.
Uninstall an d then reinsta ll the H P Scanjet utilities If checking the sca nner cable connectio ns did not solve the problem, the p roblem might have occurred because of a n incomplete inst allation. Try uninstalling and then rein stalling the HP scanning utilities.
Scanner l amp stay s on The scanner lamp should t ime out and turn off automat ically after a period of inactivit y (about 15 minu tes). If the scan ner lamp re mains on after a long period of inactivity, turn off the scanne r, wait 30 seconds, and then turn the sc anner back on.
Scanned pages a re missing at the scan destina tion When scanning with the ADF , pages that stick t ogether are scanned as on e item. The hidden pages are not scanne d. Enable Misfeed (Multi pick) Detection to sto p the scan or copy process if mul tiple pages are fed into the sc anner at on e time.
When scanning from t he scanner glass, the it em might not be placed correctly on the scanner glass. Make sure that the ite m you are trying to scan is placed face do wn on the glass and the lid is closed.
Scanning at a higher resolution than ne cessary creates a larger file with no add itional benefit. • Color scans create larg er files than do black an d white scans. • If you are scanni ng a large numb er of pages at on e time, consider sca nning fewer pages at a time to create mo re, smaller files.
Buttons do not wo rk After each step, press a button to see if it is working correctly. I f the problem persists, proceed with the next step. 1. The buttons might b e disabled in the H P scanning softwa re. Ensure that t he Disa ble front panel buttons setting in the HP Scanne r Tools Utility i s cleared.
Wrong profile is used whe n the Scan button is press ed If you are using the HP Smart Docum ent Scan Software, use the HP Scanner Tools Ut ility to determine which HP Smar t Document Scan Sof tware profile is assigne d to the Scan button. If nece ssary, reset the prof ile assigned to the b utton.
Clear a jam from the automatic document feeder 1. Remove any loose pages f rom the automat ic document feeder (ADF) inpu t tray. 2. Lift the latch on top of t he ADF to open the t op and side ADF acce ss doors. 3. Remove any jammed pag es from the ADF input tray.
4. Remove any jammed p ages from inside the ADF. 5. Remove any jammed pag es from the ADF outpu t tray. 6. If the jammed p age still can not be removed, follow these st eps: a . Open the scanne r lid. b . Push the green tab toward the scanner lid to open the inner ADF access d oor.
7. Close the inner AD F access door, and then cl ose the scanner l id. 8. At the scan destinati on, examine the scan out put to determine whi ch page was the last to be completely scanned.
Automatic document feed er does not feed pap er • The automatic document feeder (ADF) access doors migh t not be securely latched. Open the ADF access do ors, and then close the doors by pressing firm ly. • A problem with the ADF hardware migh t exist.
5 Accessibility Accessibility features The N9120 scanner includes the following acce ssibility features: LED Reader The LED Reader is softwa re that outputs the status of the indicator LEDs on the scanner front panel to the computer monitor as the LEDs change.
