3 Introduction Thank you for purcha sing the Network Scanner ScanSnap N1800. This easy-to-operate networ k scanner is used to scan document s for further use. 4 ■ Opening Help When the [Help] button is available on the windo w or dialog box that is displa yed during the operation, you can open Help by clicking it. Help provides information about ite ms on the windows and actions to take for the messag es.
5 T o avoid injuries, do not pla ce the scanner in an area where small children may be able to reach. Before moving the scanner , be sure to disconnect the cables th at are connected to the scanner , and disconnect the powe r cable from the AC outlet.

8 Chapter 1 Before Using the Scanner 1.1 From Arrival through Operation The following shows the flow from scanner arrival through ope ration. This manual provides informa tion about Steps 1 to 5 shown below. For information about Steps 6 to 9, refer to the manuals downloaded in Step 5.

10 Chapter 2 Setting up the Scanner 2.1 Removing the Protective Packaging The scanner comes with a protective foam sheet and protective card atta ched. Follow the proced ure described below to r emove the prot ective packagin g before using the scanner.
11 Chapter 3 Configuring Scanner Basic Settings When the power button is pressed for the first time after purchase, the window fo r scanner basic settings appear s automatically. The basic settin gs for using the scanner can be configur ed with this process.
12 6. Set the scanner name. On the [Scanner Name] windo w, specify the scanner name and group or doma in for joining the network, and press the [Next] button. 7. Set the region/timezone. On the [Region / Timezone] window, s elect the region/timezone and whether to apply daylight saving time, and press the [Next] button.
13 10. Change the admin password. On the [Admin Password] wind ow, specify the administrator password, and pr ess the [Next] button. The default value for the [Cur rent Password] is "password". 11. Set the scanner's IP address. On the [IP Address] windo w, set the scanner's IP address, and press the [Next] button.
14 14. Confirm the configured se ttings. On the settings confirma tion window of the installation wizard, conf irm the configured basic settings, an d press the [OK] button. D The wizard finishes and the login window appears. This concludes the scanner basic settings procedure.
15 Chapter 4 Checking the Network Connection This section describes how to check the status of the network connection. The network connection ca n be checked by perfor ming a ping test. 1. Log in to the scanner wit h the user name and password of the administrator.
16 Chapter 5 Downloading the Manual For this scanner, the Operator 's Guide (PDF), which contains information about scan ner settings, administration, and operations, is provide d in addition with this manual. Read it when using the sca nner. Use Adobe Reader (*) to view the Oper ator's Guide.
17 Appendix A T roubleshooting Network Connection T roubleshooting ■ Checking Basic Network Operation with a Ping T est The network connection may be ch ecked by performing a ping test. For more details on how to perform a ping test, refer to "Chapter 4 Ch ecking the Network Connection" (page 15).
18 ■ Failure to Connec t to a Server Using Its IP Address If a server cannot be conn ected to by using its IP address, or if a scanner does not respond to a ping test by specifying its IP ad dress, try the following: ■ Action Check that the LAN cable is connected to both the scanner and server correctly.
19 ■ Failure to Connect to a Server Using Its Host Name or FQDN If the scanner cannot connect to a ser ver by specifying its host name or FQDN, or if a server does not respond to a ping test by spec.
20 ■ Action Set the scanner URL as a trusted site for Internet Explorer. 1. In Internet Explorer, select the [To ols] menu J [Internet Options]. 2. On the [Security] tab, sele ct [Trusted sites] and press the [Sites] button. 3. Enter the URL of the scanner in the [Add this website to the zone] field, and press the [Add] button.
