Setup Setup 1 Getting Star ted Guide This booklet guides you step by step from setup through prin ting your first document, making c opies, scanning an image, and sending a fax. Getting Started Guide 2 Step 2 : A ttach and e xtend tr ays Step 3 : L oad up to 100 sheets of plain paper 1 Attach the scanner output tr ay by snapping it into the two slots in the front of the prin ter . 2 Make sure you fully extend the paper supports.
Setup Setup 3 Step 4 : C onnec t the power c ord Step 5 : Sel ec t your language When the power is connected, the printer will ask yo u to select your language. Use the option button to find the language you wish to use for the LCD panel menus. Once you hav e found your language, press star t/yes to select it .

Setup Setup 5 Step 7 : Align the cartridges After installing the print cartridges and closing the cov er , an alignment page will be automatically printed. F rom each alignment group on the alignmen t page, find the number under the alignment pattern that c omes closest to forming a straight line.

Co py i n g Copying 19 Co p y i n g It is easy to make color and black&white copies with the C ompaq A4000. Pr eparing documents for copying Y ou can use the A4000 to copy documents tha t are printed on standa rd letter , legal, or A4-sized paper .
Getting Started Guide 20 Note: Do not feed any thing thicker than a normal sheet of paper into the scanner . For ex ample, you cannot copy credit car ds or a driver’ s license .
Scanning Scanni ng 21 Scanning The Compaq A4000 offers two wa ys to scan a document . Y ou can scan: > Using your c omputer > Using the Scan button Y ou can scan a document while your A4000 is printing a prev ious print job, but not while you ar e faxing or m aking copies.
Getting Started Guide 22 Use the sleeve for the following types of documents: > Env elopes, checks , or receipts > Photographs or fr agile documents > Curled, wrinkled, creased, thin, or torn paper > Carbon, coated, onion skin, or glossy paper Note: Do not feed any thing thicker than a normal sheet of paper into the scanner .
Scanning Scanni ng 23 6 Optionally , you can select the Preview button. This will per form a quick pre view scan of your document. Once the pr eview is complete, y ou can move and size the dashed bo x to selec t the exact area of the documen t you wish to scan.
Getting Started Guide 24 Scanning to a folder The first Scan T o menu destina tion is a folder on your PC. This is initially y our My Pictures folder , located in your My Documents dir ec tory . Y ou can ch ange your folder and default file type wi th the A4000 settings utility .
Scanning Scanni ng 25 Scanning to custom applications The remaining Scan T o menu options are for defining your own applica tions. Y ou can define up to six (6) additional app lications using the A4 000 settings utility .
Getting Started Guide 26 Getting mor e from y our scanner Large scan areas and/ or resolutions above 300 DPI require additional memory and disk space, and w ill take longer to pr ocess. T o minimize this, use the Pr eview button first . Then select only the area you need to scan, and don’t use a resolution abo ve 300 DPI unless requir ed .
Fa x i n g Faxing 27 Fa x i n g The Compaq A4000 offers two w ays to fax a document : > Using the front c ontrol panel > Using a fax form This section describes fax settings, and faxing using the front con trol panel. For information on the fax form, see “F ax F orm” on page 31.
Getting Started Guide 28 3 Pressing the pau se/re dial button after you hav e star ted entering a number will insert a P into the number . This results in a three-second pause while dialing . This is useful when you hav e to dial a number and wait for an outside line (for example, 9P7135 551212 ).
29 Y ou must have an email progr am installed on your computer , and it must suppor t MAPI ( a mail application interface). Mo st popular email pr ograms support the MAPI inte rfac e. Once the pages are scanned, y our email program will start and the scanned pages will be attached and sent as an email.
Getting Started Guide 30 R eceiving a fax The A4000 has four fax receive modes. The current r eceive mode is display ed in the top right corner of the L C D display . Y ou can change the receive mode with the Settings utility , or by pressing the setup button, followed by the menu button .
31 Fa x F o r m The fax form is a quick and easy way to: > Print a fax c over page > Easily fax to your fr equently dialed speed send numbers The fax form is a paper document tha t you can use to give instruct ions to yo ur A4000. Mark it with a pencil or pen an d feed it into the scanner .
