Chapter 9: Managing Logical Drives and Hot Spares ● 74 Understanding Lo gical Drives A logical drive is a group of p h ysical disk drives that ap pears to your operating system as a single dr iv e that can be used for stor ing data. A logical drive can c omprise one or more disk drives and can use part or all of each disk driv e’ s capacit y .

If the logical drive inc ludes redunda ncy , however , the size of each segment can be no larger than the si ze of the smallest disk drive.

Chapter 9: Managing Logical Drives and Hot Spares ● 80 Changing the Read Cache Se tting Wh en rea d cac hing is enabled, the contro ller monitors the read ac cess to a logical drive and, i f it sees a patt ern, pre- loads the cache with data that seems most likely t o be read next, incr easing performance.
Chapter 9: Managing Logical Drives and Hot Spares ● 81 Changing the Initialize Priority The Initializ e P rior ity setting determines the priorit y for the initialization of the logical drive. The d efault setting is High , w hich means that the logical drive is initialized a s quickly as possible.
