3 1. Introduction Thank you for purchasing our IEEE802.11b W LAN PCMCIA Card. It will be interoperable am ong IEEE 802.11b st andard com pliant products f rom other manuf acturer s and allow s y ou to build a w ireless LAN. Bes ides, y ou can use your PC to connect with an acces s point wirelessly to share the wired network resourc es.
4 2. Installation 2.1 Overv iew In this chapter we will cover how to install the IEEE802.11b W LAN PCMCIA Card. To es tablish y our wireless network connec tion, the following steps should be executed. 1. Install the software by using the installation CD 2.
5 2.2 Install the IEEE802.11b WLA N Utilit y / Driver Pleas e install the IEEE802.11b WLAN Utility / Driv er first before ins erting the IEEE802.11b WLAN PCMCIA Card. 1. Insert the IEEE802.11b W LAN installation CD into y our CD-ROM drive. T he setup program will then autom atically start.
6 3. Please caref ully read the “ Software License Agreem ent“. If y ou accept the contract, please click “ Yes “ to move to the next s creen. If not, click “ No “ to exit. 4. Please choose your wireless device adapter , and click “ Next “.
7 5. T he default destination folder is displayed in the setup dialog box. T o change the default folder you can click “ Browse “ to set the des tination f older or c lic k “ Next “ to go to the next sc reen. 6. Select the Program Folder for IEEE802.
8 7. Y ou will be ask ed if you w ant to add an IEEE802.11b W LAN Utility shor tcut to y our desk top. Click “ Yes “ to add a shortc ut to y our desktop.
9 10. The “ Network “ page will be prom pted as follows if y ou click on “ Yes ” in pr evious screen. You can add the necess ary protocols by click ing “Add” button. Please refer to the Chapter 4.2 Microsof t Networking Check list f or related settings about Network.
10 A ddi t i onal Note for Window s NT4.0 The installation proc edure under W indows NT4.0 will be a little diff erent fr om W indows 98 s hown below. It w ill be change after step10 ref er to the installation of W indows 98.
11 5. T he Network proper ties page will appear automatic ally in the screen if you click “ Yes “ in the last s tep. You should choose “ AW LAN 11 Mb IEEE802.11b Adapter “ in the Network Adapter of upper menu and add necessar y protocols , then click OK.
12 A ddi t i onal Note for Window s 2000 to i nst al l t he Packet Protocol You should add Packet Pr otocol under W indow s 2000. If the Pack et Protocol doesn’t exist in y our system, the installation procedure will be a little diff erent from W indow s 98.
13 3. If Packet Pr otocol installed suc cessf ully , y ou have to reboot your system and the IEEE802.11b Utility / Driver ins tallation under W i ndows 2000 is com plete. 4. If the Pack et Protocol installation has failed, the m essage will be prom pted as follows.
14 2.3 Install the PCM CIA card The IEEE802.11b W LAN driver and utilities ar e included on the accompany ing installation CD. Please follow the ins tallation procedures in Chapter 2.2. (Your PCMCIA card will not work pr operly if the driv er and utilities are not installed correctl y.
15 2.4 Utility Startup Configuration IEEE802.11b W LAN PCMCIA Card has its own m anagem ent software. Users can control all f unctions provided by the application nam ed IEEE802.11b W LAN Utility . The Utility icon will appear in the working bar by click ing the IEEE802.
16 2.4.1.2 Basi c Set ting for 802.11Ad Hoc Mode If you have more st ations and just want to set them as local netw ork , use IEEE802.11b Utility window to: • Select the Mode as ” 802.11 Ad Hoc”. • S elect t he corre ct SSID . ! Every m em ber of your wireless peer -to-peer network will shar e SSID.
17 2.4.1.3 Basi c Set ting for Ad Hoc Mode If you have more st ations and just want to set them as local netw ork , you can also select Ad Hoc Mode on y our W LAN Utility. The proc edure is as f ollows. • Select the Mode as ” Ad Hoc”. • Select the correct c hannel.
18 2.4.2 A dvanced Settings Only if connected to an exis ting network advanced par ameter s can be spec ified for an IEEE802.11b PCMCIA card. Consult your LAN Adm inistrator for inform ation about whether these param eters apply to y our s ituation. Click “ Adv anced Setting “ and then the following advanc ed setting about your IEEE802.
19 ! Caution: W EP needs to be the sam e for all IEEE802.11b s tations. Follow the steps below to set your W EP: (1) Select the data pr ivacy algorithm you w ant (64 or 128 bit W EP ty pe) (2) T y pe Passphras e (3) Click “ Generate “ to generate automatic ally the c orresponding W EP key.
20 2.5 How to use y our card 2.5.1 Wireless LA N Neighborhood If y ou want to know connec ting status in Infr astructure Mode or Ad Hoc Mode, choose W ir eless LAN Neighborhood in IEEE802.11b Utility window . 1. Infrastruct ure Mo de: • The Access Point SSID and Access Point MAC will appear in the screen if y ou choose the Infrastruc ture Mode.
21 2.5.1.1 Li nk I nf ormat i on The link inform ation, including the Channel, T ransm ission Rate, Tr ansm ission State, and W ir eless IP Addres s are revealed here. 2.5.1.2 About From this dialog box, you can get the details such as the MAC Address and the Version Inf ormation of each sof tware.
22 2.5.2 Remove y our PCMCIA Card If you do not need the wi reless connectivity of y our IEEE802.11b PCMCIA Card, y ou can follow the proc edures m entioned below to remove the PC Card f rom its slot. ! Caution: • W hen rem oving the IEEE802.11b PCMCIA Card you will lose y our c onnection to the network.
23 2.5.3 Uninstall th e IEEE802.11b WLA N Utility / Driver 1. Firs t y ou should remove the IEEE802.11b W LAN PC card. To s afely remove your PC card, we suggest you should follow the procedur e below. Click the Star t Menu, choos e Settings –> Control Panel, and clic k the PC Card (PCMCIA) icon.
24 2. T o exit the IEEE802.11b W LAN Utility, y ou should c lick the r ight bottom on the Utility icon in the work ing bar and select “ Exit “. 3. To unins tall the IEEE802.11b W LAN Utility and Driver, y ou can move to Start –> Program s –> IEEE802.
25 5. Now please click “Finish” to com plete the un-installation. A ddi t i onal Note for Window s 2000 The f ollowing items s hould be noted: 1. Please don’t r emove your PC card unless the IEEE802.11b W LAN un-installation is com pleted. 2. Make s ure to exit the IEEE802.

A pplication To enable the s haring of the Internet ac cess, you should set your IEEE802.11b W LAN m ode as “ Infras tructure “ and c onnect to the acces s point (please ref er to the Chapter 2.4.1 “ Setting “) . W hen the proc edure is com pleted, an access point will appear on the W ireless LAN Neighborhood of IEEE802.
27 • If “ Read-Only “ is selected, the other us ers in the wireless network can only copy files f rom y our f older. Copy ing files into y our folder is not allowed. • If “ Full “ is selected, the other us ers in the wireless network have full ac cess into y our f older.
28 3.2 Printer Sharing in Window s 98 In order for a printer to be s hared across the network, it has to be set as the network printer. Follow the instr uctions below to set a printer as a network printer : 1. Click the “ Start “ button, point to the “ Settings “ , and then click “ Printers “ .
29 3.3 Using the shared folder 1. Double-click the “ Network Neighborhood “ icon, and then double-clic k the com puter where the shared f older is located. 2. Double-click the folder y ou want to connect to. 3. You may w ant to assign a drive letter for shar ed folder that you connect to.
30 4. Troubleshooting If y ou encounter som e pr oblem s while installing the IEEE802.11b W LAN PC card or y ou want to confir m whether your card is ins talled properly, refer to the procedure below after you have installed the card.
31 To v erify if the driver has been set in your computer properly, you can follow the procedures bel ow . • Right-click “ My Com puter “ and then selec t “ Properties “ y ou will enter your system proper ties. Select the Device Manager and click the Network Adapter .
32 4.2 Microsoft Net w orking Checklist In order for the IEEE802.11b W LAN to run proper ly , som e network item s m ust be presented in the Micr osoft “ Network Neighborhood “ setup. T o check and activate the network s etup, please right-click the “ Network Neighborhood “ and then select “Properties” with y our m ouse.
33 Netw ork Service for Microsoft Net w orki ng: • Click “ Add “ and selec t “ Service “. • Select “ Microsof t “ as the m anufac turer and choose “ File and printer sharing f or Microsof t Networks “ for network service. • Click “ OK “ to set the network s ervice.
