R & D: Rubern Tilgner Written b y Hermann Gier and P aul White V ersion 3.1 - 6/2005 The information in this document has been carefully verified and is assumed to be corr ect. Howev er Sound Per formance Lab (SPL) reserves the right to modify the produc t described in this manual at any time.
Transient Designer 3 Co n t e n t s Dear customer , Thank you f or the confidence you have shown t owards SPL elec- tronics GmbH by purchasing the SPL T RANSIENT D ESIGNER , a highly innova tive D ynamic Processor manufactured to a high standard .
Transient Designer 4 The new T RANSIENT D ESIGNER provides a revolutionary concept for dynamic processing rendering controls such as Threshold , Ratio and Gain super fluous.
Transient Designer 5 P ack aged in a standard 19 " EIA format and occupying 1U (44,45 mm) of rack space, the T RANSIENT D ESIGNER can be installed in a standard rack, but it is recommended that the rear of the case be suppor ted , especially in touring applications.
Transient Designer 6 Before connecting the T RANSIENT D ESIGNER switch power off at all connected units. The T RANSIENT D ESIGNER is fitted with XLR-connectors for balanced operation.
Transient Designer 7 SPL's Differential Envelope T echnology® realises level- independent envelope processing , so doing away with the need for a conven- tional Threshold control. T wo envelopes are gener ated and compared - the VCA control voltage is deriv ed from their difference .
Transient Designer 8 The SUST AIN c ontrol circuitry The SUST AIN control circuitr y includes two fur ther env elope generators. The en velope follower En v 3 (Diagram 4), again follows the shape of the original curve.
Transient Designer 9 Diagram 6 illustrates the proc essed cur ves with maximum and minimum sustain compared to the original cur ve from Diagram 1. Impor tant advice when c onnec ting to digital recor ding systems: Each unit connected to the T RANSIENT D ESIGNER should be able to handle high input levels.
Transient Designer 10 The ACTIVE switch oper ates a hard-bypass relay circuit to switch the channels in and out of processing and a status LED indicates that the channel is active.
Transient Designer 11 The A T T ACK control circuitr y incorporates two en velope genera- tors. One follows the original curve while the second produces an env elope with a slow er attack period (Diagram 1, page 7).
Transient Designer 12 The T RANSIENT D ESIGNER is ideally suited for use in prof essional recording , in projec t or home studios and P . A. applications. F or the first time the T RANSIENT D ESIGNER provides the technology to manipulate the attack and sustain characteristics of a signal regardless of level, and using simple controls.
Transient Designer 13 One of the most interesting applications of the T RANSIENT D ESIGNER is processing drum and percussion sounds , both from samples to live drum sets: • The attack of a bass drum or a loop can be emphasised to increase the power and presence in the mix.
Transient Designer 14 • Used to process guitar sounds, the T RANSIENT D ESIGNER softens the instrument by lowering the attack. Alternatively , increasing the attack lets the sound jump to the front of the mix, which works par ticularly well for picking guitars.
Transient Designer 15 Internal 15 V A torroidal transformer V oltage selector Ground-lift switch T ransformer , power cord and mains connector with VDE, UL and CSA approv als. F uses (primar y voltages): 200 mA/400 mA. Special care has gone into the design of the power supply of the T RANSIENT D ESIGNER .
Transient Designer 16 Input & Output Instrumentation amplifier , electronically balanced (differential), transformerless Nominal input level ...................................... +6 dB Input impedance .......................................... = 22 kOhms Output impedance .
Transient Designer 17 SPL electronics GmbH (hereaf ter called SPL) products are warranted only in the country where purchased, through the authorized SPL distributor in that country , against defects in material or workmanship.
