1. Introduction 1. 1 Overview T he SMC2 586W -G is a ver satile devic e that can be c onfigur ed to be in one o f the 3 oper a-tional modes — Ac ces s Point, Bridge Mas ter , and Bridge Slav e—for v arious wirele ss bridging applications .
• 64-bit and 12 8-bit WEP (Wired E quivalent Priv acy ). F or wir eless data encryp-tion. • IEEE 802. 1x/RADIUS. When the SMC2 586W -G is in Ac cess P oint mode, it c an be configur ed to authentic ate wir eless user s and distribut e encryption ke ys dynami-c ally by IEEE 80 2.
• Detachable ant enna. T he SMC25 86W -G antenna c an be replac ed with SMC high-gain antennas f or long operating r ange. • DHCP client. T he SMC2 586W -G can aut omatically obtain an IP addre ss fr om a DHCP server .
• UPnP . T he SMC2 586W -G re sponds to UPnP disc overy mes sages so that a Win-do ws XP user c an locat e the SMC25 86W -G in My Netw ork Place s and use a W eb brow ser t o con figure it . • T elne t . The SMC2 586W -G can be managed by T elnet.
2. Fir st - Time Ins tallation and C onfigur ation 2. 1 Selecting a P ow er Supply Method T he SMC2 586W -G can be pow er ed by either the supplied po wer adapt er or the optional SMCPWR-INJ3 Elit eConnect™ P ow er Injector . The SMC2 586W-G automatic ally selects the suit able pow er depending on your decision.

2.3 Preparing f or C onfigur ation To co nf igure an SMC2 586W -G, a managing comput er with a W eb brow ser is needed. F or firs t-time c onfigur ation of an SMC2 586W -G, an E thernet net- w ork int erf ace c ard (NIC) should ha ve been ins talled in the managing co m- puter .
Changing the T CP /IP Set tings of the Managing C omputer Use the Windo ws Ne twork C ontrol P anel Applet t o change the TCP /IP s et- tings of the managing c omputer , so that the IP addr ess o f the comput er and the IP addre ss of the SMC2 586W -G are in the same IP subne t.

T he SMC2 586W -G supports 3 operational mode s for meeting v arious wire- less c onnectivity r equirements: • Ac ces s Point ( AP). T he AP mode enables IEEE 80 2. 11 St ations (S T As ) to auto-matic ally associat e with it via the st andard IEEE 80 2.

2.5 Deploying the SMC2 586W -G Aft er the set tings hav e been con figured, deplo y the SMC2586W -G to the field application en vironment. C onnect the SMC25 86W -G to an E thernet LAN through an E thernet swit ch/hub. If e xternal high-gain dir ectional antennas ar e needed, it may be difficult t o align the antennas .

• Bridge Slav e (BS). Us e this mode to pr ovide the Bridge Slav e functionality of the SMC268 2W . The Bridge Slav e mode is designed t o work in thos e net- w ork s where SMC2 682W W ireles s Bridge Mast ers ar e alre ady installed.
