1 Everyday Basics After you install the MobiLink TM software and set up your Merlin TM XU870 ExpressCar d for firsttime use, it’ s time to get down to the everyday basics. The following steps provide a r oadmap of typical usage activities. Use it as a guide and customize it according to your needs.
2 3 Insert your Merlin XU870. Y ou’ll see the message “No Device Detected” on the MobiLink control panel befor e you insert your Merlin XU870 into the ExpressCar d slot.
3 4 Send or receive SMS. Once you are attached to a cellular network, you can send and receive SMS. Check the envelope icon on the MobiLink control panel. It will appear blue when SMS is available and gray when it is not. Click the envelope icon on the MobiLink control panel to send and receive SMS.
4 5 Surf the web or check your email. When you surf the web or send or receive email, you ar e sending and receiving data fr om the cellular network. Before you can do this, you have to connect to the network. Select a profile and click the Connect button on the MobiLink control panel to connect to the network.
5 6 Disconnect from the network. • Click Disconnect to end your Internet session. • Click the Menu button and select Exit . • Remove your Merlin XU870 from the ExpressCar d slot. W ant to find out how much time you spent online? See page 18 for instructions.

MobiLink Basics T o start MobiLink, doubleclick the MobiLink icon on your desktop (see page 1). This opens the MobiLink control panel. 3 5 6 1 SMS Click to send and receive SMS. 2 Address Book Click to add SMS contacts or groups. 3 Views Select the Mobile view to connect to the cellular network.
8 Always on T op Use the Always on T op setting to keep your MobiLink contr ol panel displayed on your screen when you switch pr ograms or windows. • Click the Menu button (page 7) and select Configuration . • Select the General tab. • Select Always on top .
9 Sound Effects Y ou can customize more than just visual ef fects with MobiLink. Use the Sound Effects On setting to hear a sound when you click on items on the MobiLink control panel. This setting is turned on by default. • Click the Menu button (page 7) and select Configuration .
10 Launch at Startup Use the Launch at Startup setting to automatically start MobiLink when you start your laptop. Y ou must have Windows Administrator rights to enable this setting. Check your Windows system documentation for additional information on Administrator rights.
11 Language MobiLink is automatically set to the language you use for Microsoft Windows (W indows Default). Y ou can select a differ ent language, if your operating system supports the language. • Click the Menu button (page 7) and select Configuration .
12 T ransparency Use the T ransparency setting to allow desktop items to appear even when the MobiLink control panel is on top. Adjust it anywher e from 0 to 90 percent (0% being solid and 90% being the most transpar ent). • Click the Menu button (page 7) and select T ransparency .
13 Get Connected Connect to the cellular network when you want to surf the web or send or receive email. Connection Profile A connection profile is used to authorize your r equest and create a secure connection to the available cellular network. Y ou’ll need to get the Access Point Name (APN), Username and Password from your mobile operator .
14 • Enter the Profile Name and the APN* . • Click the Next button. • If requir ed, enter the Username* and Password* . • Click the Finish button. * The APN, Username and Password are specific to your mobile operator . Contact your mobile operator for more information.
15 Connection Mode Y ou can connect to the cellular network manually or automatically each time you start your computer . Y our Merlin XU870 is set up by default to connect manually . If you change this default to connect automatically , the profile you used the last time you connected manually will be used for the automatic connection.
16 Lock Code Use the Lock Code setting to secure your cellular network connections. When enabled, you will be prompted to enter the PIN code for your SIM card each time you connect. • Click the Menu button (page 7) and select Configuration from the menu.
17 Change PIN Code For security reasons, you should change your pr eset PIN code. The length of your PIN code will vary , depending on your mobile operator . • Click the Menu button (page 7) and select Configuration from the menu. • Select the Mobile tab.
18 Connection Log T o monitor the duration of your connection and data transferr ed, you can view connection statistics throughout the month. Y ou can r eset the Data and Time counters at any time. Please note that the usage information shown in MobiLink may be differ ent from that shown on your bill.
19 SMS Basics Y our Merlin XU870 is equipped to send and receive SMS. This featur e may or may not be available, depending on your mobile operator . Click the SMS button on the MobiLink control panel to open the SMS window . 1 Inbox Messages you receive on your Merlin XU870.
20 Read messages An envelope icon will display in the top right corner of the MobiLink control panel when you r eceive a new message. • Select the requir ed folder . • Select the message you want to read in the top panel (Summary). The messages displays in the bottom panel (Message).
21 Send messages The length of outgoing messages is limited to 160 characters. If your message is longer than this, it will be sent in multiple messages. • Click the New SMS/Email Message button. • In the To box, type the phone number of the recipient.

23 Addr ess Book Basics Tired of typing the same email address or phone number every time you send an SMS? W ant to send an SMS regularly to a gr oup of friends? Use the Address Book to set up contact information. Y ou can also send an SMS to a contact in your Address Book without opening the SMS window .
24 Add a new contact A display name is requir ed for each contact. Be sure to include the correct phone number for your contact. • Select either Windows Address Book or SIM from the Addr ess Book list. • Click the New Entry button. • T ype the contact name in the Display Name box.
25 Add a new group Groups ar e useful when you want to send an SMS to several contacts at once. Create a gr oup name and then add individual contacts from your Address Book to the gr oup. T o send an SMS to the gr oup, just enter the name of the group in the T o box.

27 T r oubleshooting Why can’t I install MobiLink? Y ou might not have administrative privileges. Contact your system administrator , if applicable, or log on to your computer as an administrator and create a user account with administrator privileges.
28 Windows did not install the drivers for your XU870 correctly . • Rightclick on the My Computer icon on your desktop and select Manage from the shortcut menu. • Select D D e e v v i i c c e e M M a a n n a a g g e e r r . • Click the plus sign (+) next to M M o o d d e e m m s s .
29 If you see a yellow exclamation mark (!) or red x beside any device, try the following: • Restart your computer . OR • Choose StartSettingsContr ol PanelAdd or Remove Programs . Note: Make sure your XU870 is in the Expr essCard slot. • Select MobiLink and click Remove .
30 Why do I see the message “SIM not found” when I run MobiLink? Y our SIM card uses contact points to connect with your XU870. T ake care not to touch or damage the contact points. Use the orientation notch as a guide to properly insert the SIM. Why does the LED flash red? This happens when your SIM card is locked.

33 Glossary Attached When your Merlin XU870 has found a cellular network and has register ed to it, the LED will flash (see page 47). In this state you can send and receive SMS. However , to pass data (i.e., surf the web or check your email), you must be connected.
34 EDGE Enhanced Data GSM Environment OR Enhanced Data for Global Evolution. EDGE is an enhanced version of GPRS that enables the delivery of multimedia and other broadband applications to mobile devices. It is designed to deliver data downloads at rates up to 237 kbps and is considered an evolutionary step to 3G/UMTS.
35 Kbps Kilobits (1024 bits) per second rate of data flow . LAN Local Area Network. A data network confined to limited area with moderate to high data rates. Mbps Megabits (1,048,576 bits) per second rate of data flow . MB Megabyte. A unit of data equal to approximately 1 million bytes.
36 Proxy A fir ewall mechanism that replaces the IP address of a host on the internal (protected) network with its own IP address for all traf fic passing through it. SMS Short Messaging Service. Short text messages of no more than 160 characters sent and r eceived by broadband devices.
37 Safety Information Important Notice Due to the transmission and reception pr operties of cellular communications, data can occasionally be lost or delayed. This can be due to the variation in radio signal strength that r esults from changes in the characteristics of the radio transmission path.
38 Where explosive atmospher es may be present. •D o not operate your XU870 in any area wher e a potentially explosive atmosphere may exist. Sparks in such areas could cause an explosion or fir e resulting in bodily injury or even death. Be aware and comply with all signs and instructions.
39 On an aircraft, either on the gr ound or airborne. • In addition to F AA r equirements, many airline r egulations state that you must suspend wireless operations befor e boarding an airplane.
