Introduction and Description 4 Chapter 1: Introduction and Description Welcome to the world of ISDN communic ations. You have acquired one of the finest ISDN termina l ad apters (TAs) available today, model MTA1 28ST/NT from Multi-Tech Systems.
Introduction and Description 5 Your ISDN TA is compat ible with prevalent ISDN switch protocols. It communicates using ISDN BRI (2B+D) service, which provides up to 128 K bps data communication s.
Introduction and Description 6 If your ISDN product operates with a S/T outlet interf ace, you need an NT1 device to co nnect to the ISDN switch. MTA128ST adapters nee d an NT1 device to connect to the ISDN switch, but the MTA128NT adapter does not require NT1 device.

Hardware Installation 10 Chapter 2: Hardware Installation This chap ter shows you step-b y-step how to s et up your MTA1 28ST /NT terminal adapter (TA) to your co mp ut er , power, network terminator, and an auxiliary analog device. Pl ease follow these instructions carefu lly to a void damage to your TA.
Hardware Installation 11 Turn on the TA by sliding the power switch to ON and verify opera tion by observing the LEDs on the front panel. The LEDs first flash in a self-test pattern. Then the LS LED r emains on. If the TA does not appear to be working, Refer to Chapter 5 for tro ubleshooting hel p.
Configuration Utilities 12 Chapter 3: Config uration Utilities Introduction You can configure the MTA128ST/NT to match your ISDN se rvice and the remote terminal adapter (TA) wi th any of four methods listed below: • ISDN TA Configuration Utility This configuration utility is recommended for computers running Windows 98/NT/ME operating systems.
Configuration Utility 13 Vo i c e TE I___________________________________________ Voice TEI is the TEI assigned to the voice channel. Choi ces are: Auto TEI, a fixed TEI number, or Di sable.
Configuration Utility 14 V.120 Protocol —Similar to V.1 10 protocol, but provides rates u p to 64000 bps on each B channel. X.75 Protocol —Packet-switched ne twork protocol for international use. Layer 2 portion of this p rotocol is used commonly as a rate adaption protocol.
Configuration Utility 15 DCD Drop Time _____________________________________ Sets the time, in 0.1-second increments, that a carri er must be lost before the TA disconnects. The default value is 0.7 seconds; however, you can set it anywhere in the range 0–254 (0–25.
Configuration Utility 16 Configuring your TA If you use Windows 98/Me/NT, perform t he following procedure using the Confi guration Utility provided on your system CD. If you are using another operating system, you can configure the TA using the firmware-b as ed configuration utility or AT commands .

The TEI is a unique number assigned to the TA at subscription time. The TEI is used by the telephone c en tra l office (CO) to identify the various TAs conne cted to the ISDN network.

A SPID points to a specific location in the pr ovider’s central off ice mem ory where service and feature parameters are stored.

Troubleshooting 33 Debugging/Logging/Troubleshooting Commands The AT commands in this section can be used in a ttempting to troublesh oot or debug a current problem. Some commands may be enhanced or limited by the debugg ing/logging/troubles hooting S-regist ers.
Troubleshooting 34 • The MTA1 28ST/NT or powe r supply may be defec tive. If you have another Mu lti-Tech MTA1 28ST/N T, try swapping MTA128ST/NTs. If the problem goes away, th e first MTA128ST/NT or power supply may b e defective. Call Tech Support for assistance.
