Installation 11 1. Choose an Installation Site Select a suitable p lace on the netw ork to install the W ireless Router. For best Wireless reception and performance, the Wireless Router should be positioned i n a central location with min i- mum obstruction s between the Wireless Router and the PCs.

Setup 14 Configuration Program The W ireless Router contains an HTTP server. T his enables y ou to connect to it, and configure it, using y our W eb Browser. Your Brow ser must support Jav a- Script . Internet Explorer 6 and abov e is recomm ended.
Setup 15 If you can't connect If the W ireless Router does not respond, check the following: The W ireless Router is properly installed, LAN connection is OK, and it is powered ON. Y ou can test the connection by using the "Ping" co m- mand: O pen the MS-DOS wi ndow or comm and prompt window.

Setup 17 Home Screen After finishing the Setup W izard, y ou will see the Home screen. W hen you connect in future, y ou will see this screen when y ou connect. An example s creen is shown below. Home Screen Main Menu The m ain menu, on the left, contains links to the most -com m only used sc reen.
Setup 18 LA N Screen Use the LAN link on the main menu to reach the LAN screen. An example scr een is shown below . LA N Screen Data - LA N Screen TCP/IP IP A ddress IP address for the W ireless Router, as seen from the local LAN. Use the default value un less the address is already in use or y our LAN is using a di fferent IP address range.
Setup 19 DHCP What DHCP Does A DHCP (Dy nam ic Host Configuration Protocol) Server allocates a valid IP address to a DHCP Client (PC or device) upon request. T he client request is made when the client device starts up (boots). T he DHCP Server provide s the Gateway and DNS addresses to the client, as well as al locating an IP A ddress.
Setup 20 Mode Screen Use this screen to change the mode between Router m ode and Access Point m ode. Mode Screen Select the desired opti on, and click "Save". Router In this mode, this device can provide shared In ternet Access to all y our LAN users.
Setup 21 Wireless - Options Screen The W ireless Router's settings m ust m atch the other W ireless stations. Note that the W ireless Router will automatically accept both 802.11b and 802.11 g connections, and no configuration is requi red for this feature.
Setup 22 SSID 1/2 This is also called the "Netw ork Nam e". If using an ESS (Extended Servi ce Set, with multiple a ccess points) this ID is called an ESSID (Extended Servi ce Set Identifier). To c omm unicate, all W ireless stations should use the same SS ID/ESSID.
Setup 23 Wireless - Schedule To conserve power usage, y ou can set the time when the w ireless signal wi ll be dea ctivated. For example at night whe n there is no one using the w ireless network. Wireless – Schedule Screens Wireless Schedule Enable / Dis a- ble This button Enables or Disables the W ireless Schedule function.
Setup 24 Wireless - M A C Filter This function allows y ou to allow or deny access to W ireless stations using their MAC Addresses. Wireless – MAC Filter S creen MAC A ddress Filter A llow access by … Use this feature to determine which W ireless stations can use the Access Point.
Setup 25 Wireless - M A C Filter - Trusted Wireless Stations This feature can be used to prevent unknown W irele ss stations from using the Access Point.
Setup 26 Edit Use this to change an existing entry in the "Trusted Stations" list: 1. Select the Stati on in the Trusted Station l ist. 2. Click the Edit button. The addres s will be co pied to the "A ddress" field, and the Add button wi ll change to Update .
Setup 27 Wireless - WiFi Pr otected Setup (WPS) W PS feature is follow ing the W i- Fi Alli ance W PS standard and it e ases the set up of security-enabled W i-Fi networks in the home and sm all office environment.
Setup 28 An alternativ e is to press the W PS button a t the front of the router until the W LAN light starts flashing. This indicates that W PS is activated and ready to be paired with client device. The W PS w ill be in p airing mode (flashing) for 1 m inute.
Setup 29 Wi reless - Wireless Distri bution Sy stem (WDS) W DS operation as defined b y the IEEE802.1 1 standard has been made available. Using W DS it is possible to wirelessly connect Access Points, and in doing so extend a wired i nfrastructure to locations where cabl ing is not possible or inefficient to implem ent.
Setup 30 WDS Environment Below i s an example of how a W DS operates. Wireless Distribution System 1. AP1, AP2 a nd AP3 are configured to use the same Channel and S ecurity se ttings. 2. Enter AP2 and A P3’s MAC addresses into AP1’ s W DS MAC Address list.
Setup 31 Wireless Security This screen is acces sed by c lick ing the " Configure " button on the Wireless - O p- tions screen. There are 4 options for W ireless security: Wireless Security Screen Disabled - no data encr y ption is used.
Setup 32 WEP W ireless Se curity WEP Data - WEP Screen WEP Data Encryption A ut hentication Type Normally, thi s should be left at the default v alue of "Automatic". If changed to "Open Sy stem " or "Shared Key ", ensure that y our W ireless Stations use the sam e setting.
Setup 33 WPA -PSK Wirele ss Security WPA - PSK Data - WPA - PSK Screen Security System WPA - PSK Like W EP, data is encry pted before transm ission. W PA is more secure than W EP, and shoul d be used if possible. W PA- PSK is the version of W PA, which does NOT require a Radius Server on y our LAN.
Setup 34 WPA 2-PSK Wire less Security WPA 2- PSK Data - WPA 2- PSK Screen A ut hentication WPA 2- PSK This is a further development of W PA-PSK, and offers even greater security. PSK Enter the PSK (netw ork k ey ). Data is encrypte d using a key derived from the network k ey.
Setup 35 WPA / WPA2-802.1x Wire less Sec urity WPA / W PA 2- 802.1x Data – WPA / WPA 2-802.1x Screen Server A ddress Enter the server address here. Radius Port Enter the port number used for connections to the Radius Server. Shared Key Enter the shared key.

37 Ch apt er 4 PC Conf ig ur a tion This Chapter details the PC Configuration required on th e local ("I nte r- nal") LAN. Overview For each PC, the followi ng may need to be configured: .
PC Configuration 38 Checking TCP/IP Se ttings - Window s NT4.0 1. Select Control Pan el - Network , and, on the Protocols tab, select the TCP/IP protocol, as shown below . Window s NT4.0 - T CP/IP 2. Click the Properties button to see a sc reen like the one below.

PC Configuration 47 Internet A c cess To configure your PCs to use the W ireless Router for Internet acces s: Ensure that the DSL modem , Cable modem , or other permanent connection is functional. Use the following procedure to configure y our Browser to access the Internet via the LA N, rather than by a Dial-up connection.
PC Configuration 48 Click the Setup button. Select Create Location , and change the l ocation name from "New Locality " to "W ireless Router". Click Edit Location . S elect TCP/IP fo r the Network field. (Leav e the Phone Number blank.
PC Configuration 49 Linux Clients To access the Internet via t he W ireless Router, it is only necessary to set the W ireless Router as the "Gatew ay ". Ensure you are l ogged in as "root" before attempting any changes. Fixed IP A ddress By def ault, most Unix installations use a fixed IP Address.
PC Configuration 50 Wireless Station Configuration This section applies to all W ireless stations wishing to use the W ireless Router's Access Point, regardless of the operating sy s tem which is used on the client.
PC Configuration 51 Wireless Networks (Window s XP) If the "Broadcast SSID" setting on the Wireless Router has been disabled, its SSID will NOT be listed. See the following section "If th e SSID is not listed" for details of dealing with t his situation.
PC Configuration 52 To connect: Check the check box Allow me to connect to the selected wirel ess network, even though it i s not secure . The Connect button will then be available. Click the Connect button, and wait a few seconds for the connection to be established.

PC Configuration 56 Wireless Network Properties- WPA- PSK Configure this screen as follows: Set Network Authentication to WPA - PSK . For Data Encryption , select TKIP . For the Network key and Confirm network key , enter the netw ork k ey (PSK) used on the W ireless Router.
PC Configuration 57 Preferred Networks Click OK to establish a connection to the W ireless Router. If the SSID is not listed If the "Broadcast SSID" setting on the W ireless Router has been disabled, its SSID will NOT be listed on the screen below.
PC Configuration 58 Unlisted Wireless Network 2. Click the Add button. You wil l see a scr een like the exam ple b elow. A dd Wireless Network 3. Configure this screen as follows: Enter the correct SSID, as used on the W ireless Router. Remem ber the SSID is case-sensitive, so be sure to match the case, not just the spelling.
PC Configuration 59 If using data encry ption (W EP or W PA- PSK), enter the key used on the W ireless Router. See the precedi ng sections for details of W EP and W PA- PSK. Unc heck the options The key is provided for me automatically and This is a co m puter - to -computer (ad hoc) network .

For Details of operation in Bridge (M odem) mode, see Chapter 8 - Modem M ode. Operation - Router Mode Once both the Wireless Router and the PCs are configured, operation is automatic.
Operation and Status 61 Data - Status Screen Internet Connection M ethod Display s the curr ent connection method, as set in the Setup Wizard . Connection Status This indicates the current status of the Internet Connection A ctiv e - Connection exists Idle - No current connection, but no error has been detected.
Operation and Status 62 System Device Name The current nam e of the Router. This nam e is also the "hostname" for users with an " @Home" type connection. Firmware Version The version of the current firm ware installed. Current Time It display s the current tim e of the system.
Operation and Status 63 Connectio n Status - PPPoE If using PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet), a screen like the follow ing example will be di splay ed when the "Connection Deta ils" button is cli ck ed. Advanced Features 69 If the DMZ feature is enabled, y ou m ust enter IP address of the PC to be used as the "DMZ PC". The "DM Z PC" is effectively outside the Firewall, ma k- ing it more vulnerable to attacks. For this reason, you should only enable the DMZ featu re when required.
Advanced Features 70 Data - URL Filter Screen Current Filter Strings Current Filter Strings The list contains the current list of items to block. To add to the list, use the "A dd" option be low. To delete an entry , select it and click Delete button.
Advanced Features 71 Dy namic DNS (Domain Name Serv er) This free service is very useful whe n combined with the Virtual Server feature. It allows Internet u sers to connect to you r Virtual Servers using a URL, rather th an an IP Address. This also solves the problem of having a dy nam ic IP address.
Advanced Features 72 DDNS Data Host Name Enter the domain name allocated to y ou by the DDNS S ervice. If you have more than one name, enter the name you w ish to use. User Name Enter y our Usernam e for the DDNS Service. (TZ O.com uses y our E-mail address.
Advanced Features 73 Options This screen allows advanced users to enter or change a number of settings. For normal operation, there is no need to use this screen or change any settings.
Advanced Features 74 Schedule This Schedule can be used for the Firewall Rules and the URL filter. Schedule Screen Data - Schedule Screen Schedule Day Each day of the week can be scheduled independentl y. Session 1 Session 2 Two (2) separate sessions or periods can be defined.
Advanced Features 75 Use this NTP Server If you prefer to use a particular NTP server as the prim ary NTP server, check the checkbox "Use this NTP Server" and enter the Server's IP address in the fields provi ded. If this setting is not enabled , the default NTP Servers are used.
Advanced Features 76 Port Trigger If you use Internet application s which use non-standard connections or port nu m- bers, y ou may find that the y do not function correctly because they are block ed by the W ireless Router's firewall. In thi s case, you can define the application as a "Port Trigger ".
Advanced Features 77 Outgoing Ports T ype - Select the p rotocol (TCP or UDP) used when y ou send data to the remote system or service. Start - Enter the beginning of the range o f port num bers used by the application server, for data you send to it.
Advanced Features 78 Single Port Forw arding This feature allows y ou to m ake Servers on your LAN accessible to I nternet users. Norma lly , Internet users would not be able t o access a s erver on y our LAN because: Your Server does not hav e a valid e xternal IP Address.
Advanced Features 79 Data - Single Port Forw ardi ng Screen Single Port Forwarding A pp lication Enter the desired appl ication ty pe. External Port Traf fic from the Internet using this port number will be sent to the Server. This is normally th e sam e as the Internal Port Number.
Advanced Features 80 Port Range Forwarding This feature allows y ou to m ake Servers on your LAN accessible to I nternet users. Norma lly , Internet users would not be able t o access a s erver on you.
Advanced Features 81 QoS The QoS (Quality of Service) feature allows y ou specify prioriti es for diff erent traffic. Lower priority traff ic will be slowed dow n to allow greater throughput o r less delay for high priority traf fic. An exam ple QoS screen is shown below .

Advanced Administration 84 PC Database The PC Database is used whenev er y ou need to select a PC (e.g. for the " DMZ" PC). It eliminates the need to enter IP ad dresses. Also, y ou do not need to use fixed IP addresses on y our LAN.
Advanced Administration 85 PC Database (Admin) This screen is displayed if the "Advanced " button on the PC Database is c licked. It pr ovides more control than the standard PC Database screen. PC Database (A dmin) Data - PC Database (A dmin) Screen Known PCs This lists all current entries.
Advanced Administration 86 IP A ddress Select the appropriate option: A utomatic - T he PC is set to be a DHCP client (W indows: "O btain an IP address automatically "). T he W ireless Router will allocate an IP address to thi s PC when requested to do so.
Advanced Administration 87 Config File This feature allows y ou to download the current settings from the W ireless Router, and save them to a file on y our PC. You can restore a previ ously-dow nloaded configuration file to the W ireless Router, by uploading it to the W ireless Router.
Advanced Administration 88 Log s The Logs record various type s of activity on the W ireless Router. This data is useful for troubleshooting, but enabli ng all log s will gene rate a large amount of data and adversely aff ect perform ance.
Advanced Administration 89 Data - Log s Screen Logs Current Time The current tim e on the W ireless Router is display ed. Log Data Current log data is di splay ed in this pane l. Buttons There are three (3) buttons Refresh - Update the log da ta. Clear Log - Clear the log, and restart it.

Advanced Administration 92 Diagnostics This screen allows y ou to perf orm a "Ping" or a "DNS lookup". These activities can be useful in solving network problems.
