1 Protecting t he computer Standar d securit y features pr ovided by the Windows® operating s ystem and the non-Wi ndows Setup Util ity can protect you r personal settings and data from a variety of ri sks.
2 Using passwords A pass word is a gro up of c haracter s that you ch oose to sec ure your comp uter infor matio n. Seve ral types of pa sswords can be set , depen ding o n how you want to co ntrol acc ess to y our in formation . Pa sswords can be set in Win dows or in the non-Wi ndows Se tup Utilit y preinsta lled on the co mput er.
Settin g passwords in Wi ndows Password Functio n Administrator password Protects administrator-level access t o computer contents. NOTE: This password cannot be used t o acces s Setup Utility contents. User password Protects access to a Windows user account.
Managing an administrator pa ssword To set, chan ge, or d elete t his pas sword: 1. Open Setup Util ity by turning on or restartin g the comput er, and then pressin g f10 while t he setu p message is disp layed in th e lowe r-left c orner of the screen .

Entering a power-on password At the E nter P assword pro mpt, type your passwor d (usin g the same keys y ou use d to s et the passwo rd), a nd then pr ess en ter . Aft er 3 unsuc cessful attempts to enter the pas sword , you mus t restart the comput er and tr y agai n.
3 Using antivirus software When y ou use the comput er for e-mail, n etwork, or Intern et acce ss, you ex pose it to comput er vir uses. Comp uter viruses can dis able the opera ting system , programs , or utilities , or cause the m to function abnorm ally.
