4 1. Battery Installation Insert 6 1.5V "AA" size alkaline batteri es into the battery compartment located on the rear of the Main Body. Be sure the ba tteries are oriented as indicated in the battery compa rtment. NOTE: Batteries must be alkaline ty pe.
5 Remove the cle ar plastic cover f rom the printer. Start feedin g the paper into the slit inside the Pap er Roll Comp artment by pressing the PAPER FEED key.
6 There are two models a vailable : ! FUTREX-5000/XL Estimates the percen t body fat of Adults only (ages 18-80) ! FUTREX-5000A/ZL Estimates the percen t body fat of: 1) Adults 2) Adolescen t Children.
7 TO ESTIMATE PERCENT BODY FAT: (Is date correct? See page 17 .) 1) Turn Power Switch ON. The displa y will show a software ve rsion numbe r (e.g. 7.25) and will then start a 15 se cond countdo wn. The display will show Sd . 2) Insert Light W and into Optical Stan dard.
8 9) Enter Body Frame by pressin g the SMA LL, MEDIUM or LA RGE Key. There are many methods for me asuring Frame Size. Futrex does no t recommend any specific me thod but does of fer two technique s o.
9 10) Enter Heigh t in inches or cm (whole nu mbers only: e.g. 68 in. is acceptable ). Refer to page 23 to switch between English and Metric uni ts. Press ENTER . 11) Enter F.I.T. Value The follo wing procedu re provides a q uantitative method to determine a sub ject's Physical Activity Ratin g.
10 2 Moderate aerobic activity (e.g. recreational volleyball, moderate spe ed walking). 1 Light aero bic activity (e.g. normal walking, golf ing). 11C) Enter Time Value .
11 13) Press ENTER . T h e d i splay will flash a decim al point fo llowing the numb er "1". Then the number "2" will be displ ayed. 14) Remove the Li ght W an d and repla ce it on the same poin t on the biceps. 15) Press ENTER . The displa y will fla sh a decimal point foll owing the number "2".
12 Off Message An Off Messag e will appea r and the FUTREX-5000/XL Automatic Power Down f eature will turn the uni t off if the use r has not pressed any key for 6 minute s.
13 2) Using a 12 " ruler or the scale provi ded on the Arm Ban d, measure the len gth between the armpit and the inside of the elbow. 3) To mark the Measurem ent Point, measure ha lfway between the armpit and the elb ow at the "belly" of the bi ceps muscle.
14 The FUTREX-5000/XL has been carefully calibrated to provide body fat estimations . The calibration is trace able to the gene rally accepted hydrostatic proced ure. However, some users may desire to have the FUTREX-5000/XL estimation s traceable to their own la boratory.
15 9) To exit this mode: Press CLEAR . In addition to estim ating percen t body fat, a relative body fat estimation on other sites of the body (e.g. quadriceps, abd ominal reg ion) can be obtai ned using the FUTREX-5000/XL. 1 Turn Power Switch ON. The displa y will show a software ve rsion numbe r (e.
16 ! Press ENTER . The displa y will then sho w a decimal poin t following the n umber "1". The number "2" will then be d i s p l a yed. ! Remove the Li ght W an d and repla ce it on the same site on the bo dy. Press ENTER . The disp lay w ill sho w a decimal p oint follo wing the number "2".
17 To Estimate A nother Site or Repeat an Estima tion - Place the Light W a nd firmly on the particula r body site and follow steps outli ned in 6 and 7. OFF Message - An OFF Message will appe ar and the FUTREX-5000 /XL Automatic Power Down feature will turn the unit OFF if the user has not pressed an y key for 6 minutes.
18 1) Purpose of the Arm Band: ! Locates the meas urement site on the bi ceps. ! Blocks out all external light that might interf ere with the measurem ents when self testing percent body fat. 2) Using a 12 " ruler or the scale provi ded on the Arm Ban d, measure the len gth between the armpit and the inside of the elbow.
19 4) Make a ring ou t of the Arm Band and place your dominant arm throug h the center of the ri ng. 5) Tighten the Arm Band. 6) To locate the prop er measuremen t site, the Arm Band pointer sho uld be perp endicul ar to the inside crea se of the elbo w joint (standa rd anatomical position/op en palm).
20 The FUTREX-5000/XL require s that the date be manual ly changed each day. Use the following procedure to cha nge the date: 1) Press SELECT PROGRAMS t hen pre ss DA TE . The printer will show the curre nt setting, e.g. June 1, 1996. 2) Printer then prom pts user to change mon th.
21 The FUTREX-5000/XL provide s two analysis programs for Adult Use r's only: ! Fitness Analysis ! Update Ana lysis The Fitness Analysis is based up on the Metropoli tan Life Insu rance Tables com bined with the Natio nal Institutes of He alth publi shed data on the interre lationshi p between body weight/fat and lon gevity/health risks.

24 10) Enter Original Percent Body Fat obtained from the FUTREX-500 0/XL prior to starting any body fat gai n/loss progra m (be sure to press the deci mal point). Press ENTER . 11) Enter Current Perce nt Body F at. This is the percen tage value re cently obtained by the FUTREX-5000/XL.
The FUTREX-5000/XL can directly communicate with an external printer without need for any ext erna l computer usin g Futrex's unique full colo r fitness form s. The following is req uired if y ou desi re to use this featur e: ! Preprinted Color Forms - This 4 page form provid es extensive data for your clients.
26 The Function Mod e provides the us er with 3 program option s: ! Selection o f Metric or Engli sh units. ! Selection o f a Calori e Limit Mode. ! Use of Do tson-Davis Equ ations. To Enter into the Fu nction Mode : 1 Turn Power Switch ON. 1) Press the RISKS Key during the 15 second countdow n.
27 b) To Change Between Units Press either 0 or 1 and the d isplay will show the change. c) Press ENTER if this is correct. d) Press ENTER a secon d time. If y ou fa il to press ENTER a secon d time, the FUTREX-5000/XL will continue to use the origi nal setting stored in the FUTREX-5000/XL.
28 After enterin g the Function Mode : 1 Press 3 . The displa y will show either "F3 0" or "F3 1". If "F3 0" is displayed, the Dotson-Davi s Equation will be used. If "F3 1" is displayed, the Dotson-Davi s Equation will be omitted from the Body Fat Estimation Program.
