7-1 Chapter 7 Basic Cable Testing Chapter 7 provides the follow ing inform ation: • A description of LAN cable construction. • Definitions and explanations of attenuation, noise, characteristic impedance, crosstalk, near- end crosstalk (NEXT), NVP, ACR, and RL .
DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 7-2 Cables are designed to perform best in specific applications. For example, power cables are designed to m i nim ize power losses at frequencies of 50 or 60 Hz . LAN cables are designed to m i nim ize signal distortion at hig her frequencies.

DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 7-4 Coaxial Cable Coaxial cable consists of a conductor surrounded first by an insulating material, then by a braided conductiv e sheath, as shown in Figure 7- 3. In LAN applications, the sheath is electrically g rounded and serves as a shield that protects the inner conductor from electrical noise.
Basic Cable Testing Attenuation 7 7-5 Attenuation Attenuation is a decrease in the strength of a sig nal over the length of a cable, as shown in Figure 7- 4.
DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 7-6 Noise Electrical noise is unwanted electrical signals that alter the shape of the sig nals transmitted on a L AN cable. Fig ure 7-5 show s an example of how noise affects the shape of an electrical signal k nown as a sine wav e.
Basic Cable Testing Characteristic Impedance 7 7-7 LAN cables act as antennas that can pick up noise from fluorescent lig hts, electric motors, electric heaters, photocopiers, refrig erators, elevators, and other electronic devices.
DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 7-8 Minimi z i ng Impedance Disconti nui ti es Characteristic impedance is usually altered slightly by cable connections and terminations. Sharp bands or k inks in LAN cable can also alter the cable’s characteristic impedance.
Basic Cable Testing Crosstalk and Near-End Cr osstalk (NEXT) 7 7-9 Crosstalk and Near-End Crosstalk (NEXT) Crosstalk is undesirable sig nal transm ission from one cable pair to another nearby pair. Like electrical noise from outside sources, crosstalk can cause comm unication problems in networks.
DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 7-10 The plot’s horizontal scale represents the distance along the cable under test. I n the above exam ple, the cursor is placed at a sm all crosstalk source caused by a connector 77 ft (23.5m) from the test tool. The vertical scale represents the m agnitude of the crosstalk detected.
Basic Cable Testing Crosstalk and Near-End Cr osstalk (NEXT) 7 7-11 The scale of the vertical scale increases log arithmically . The scale units are arbitrary. A lev el of 50 represents a crosstalk mag nitude that is close to causing a cable failure. The level of 100 is approxim ately 20 tim es greater than the lev el of 50.
DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 7-12 Split Pairs and NEXT A split pair occurs when one w ire from a cable pair is twisted tog ether with a wire from a different cable pair. S plit pairs mo st frequently result from m iswires at punchdown blocks and cable connectors.
Basic Cable Testing Crosstalk and Near-End Cr osstalk (NEXT) 7 7-13 Minimizing Crosstalk Crosstalk problem s are minimiz ed by twisting together the two w ires in each cable pair.
DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 7-14 Nominal Velocity of Propagation (NVP) NVP is the speed of a signal throug h a cable relative to the speed of lig ht. I n a vacuum , electrical signals trav el at the speed of light. In a cable, sig nals travel slower than the speed of light.
Basic Cable Testing Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) 7 7-15 NVP Calibration The NVP values specified for standard cables are included in the cable specifications stored in the test tool. These values are accurate enough for m ost length m easurem ents.
DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 7-16 Reflections from Opens An open, or break, in the cable represents an abrupt increase in the cable’s impedance. The im pedance of an open is nearly infinite. In an open cable, a signal’s energ y is not dissipated by a terminating im pedance, so the signal bounces back towards the source.
Basic Cable Testing Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) 7 7-17 Reflections from Shorts A short represents an abrupt decrease in the im pedance between the two conductors in a cable. A short is caused when the insulation surrounding a cable’s wires is dam aged, allowing the wires to touch each other.
DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 7-18 Cable Termination Because signal reflections can distort the shape of com munication signals, the unused ends of cable segm ents m ust be terminated to prev ent reflections. The terminating device is a resistor with a value equal to the cable’s characteristic impedance.
Basic Cable Testing ACR 7 7-19 A negativ e reflection percentage indicates that the polarity of the reflection is the opposite of the original sig nal. Negativ e reflections are caused by abrupt decreases in the cable’s impedance, such as those caused by m ismatches in cable ty pes or shorts on the cable.
DSP-100/2000 Users M anual 7-20 Figure 7- 11 shows a plot of NEXT and attenuation limits, along with the resulting ACR plot. Notice that the ACR is lower where NEXT and attenuation values are near each other. 70.0 NEXT GOOD ATTEN. GOOD 0 100 Frequency in MHz Limit in dB 60.
Basic Cable Testing Troubleshooting Basics 7 7-21 Troubleshooti ng Basi cs Troubleshooting LAN cable installations is m ost often required during cable installation or modification. When cable is handled carefully and installed correctly, it usually operates trouble-free for y ears.
