1 Chapter 1 Introduction This Chapter provides an overview of the Wireless-N Broadband Router's features and capabilities. Congratulations on the purchase of y our new Wireless-N Broadband Router.
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide • Fixed or Dynamic IP Address. On the Internet (WAN por t) connection, the Wireless- N Broadband Router supports both Dy namic IP Address (IP Address is allocated on con- nection) and Fixed IP Address. Advanced Internet Functions • Application Level Gateways (ALGs).
Introduction • Wireless MAC Access Control. The Wireless Access Control feature can check the MAC address (hardware address) of Wireless stations to ensure t hat only trusted Wireless Stations can access your LAN. • Simple Configuration. If the default settings are unsuitable, t hey can be changed quickly and easily.

Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide Reset Button This button has two (2) functi ons: • Reboot . When pressed and released, the Wireless-N Broadband Router will reboot (restart). • Clear All Data . This button can also be used to clear ALL data and restore ALL settings to the factory default values.
Chapter 2 Installation This Chapter covers the physical i nstallation of the Wirel ess-N Broadband Router. Requirements • Network cables. Use standard 10/100BaseT network (UTP) cables wit h RJ45 connectors. • TCP/IP protocol m ust be installed on all PCs.

Setup Configuration Program The Wireless-N Broadband Router contains an HTTP server. This enabl es you to connect to it, and configure it, using your Web Browser. Your Browser must support JavaScript . The configuration program has been tested on the following browsers: • Netscape 7.

Setup Mode Screen Use this screen to change the mode bet ween Router mode and Access Point m ode. Figure 7: Mode Screen Select the desired option, and cli ck "Save". Router In this mode, thi s device can provide shared Internet Access to all your LAN users.
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide Wireless Screen The Wireless-N Broadband Router's set tings must m atch the other Wireless st ations. Note that the Wireless-N Broadband Rout er will automatically accept both 802.11b and 802.11g connections, and no configurati on is required for this feature.
Setup Data - Wireless Screen Region Region Select the correct domain for your lo cation. It is your responsibility to ensure: • That the Wireless ADSL Router is only used in dom ains for which is licensed. • That you select the correct domain, so that only the legal chann els for that domain can be selected.
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide Channel NO. Select the Channel you wish t o use on your Wireless LAN. • If you experience interference (shown by lost connections and/ or slow data transfers) you m ay need to experim ent with different channels to see which is the b est.
Setup Wireless Security This screen is accessed by clic king the "Configure" button on the Wireless screen. There are 4 options for W ireless security: • Disabled - no data encryption is used. • WEP - data is encrypted using the WEP standard.
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide WEP Data Encryption Select the desired option, and ensure the Wireless Stat ions use the same setting. • 64 Bit - data is encrypted, using t he default key, before being transmitted. You must enter at least the default key.
Setup WPA2-PSK Wireless Security Figure 11: WPA2-PSK Data - WPA2-PSK Screen Authentication WPA2-PSK This is a further developm ent of WPA-PSK, and offers even greater security. PSK Enter the PSK (network key). Data i s encrypted using a key derived from the network key.
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide Shared Key Enter the shared key. Data is encry pted using a key derived from the network key. Other Wireless Stations m ust use the same key . The key must be from 8 to 63 characters in lengt h. Encryption The encryption met hod is TKIP.
Setup Trusted Wireless Stations This feature can be used to prevent unknown Wi reless stations from using the Access Point. This list has no effect unless the settin g All ow access by trusted stations onl y is enabled. To change the list of trusted wireless stations, use the Modify List button on the Access Control screen.
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide Edit Use this to change an ex isting entry in the "Trusted Stations" list: 1. Select the Station in th e Truste d Station list. 2. Click the Edit butto n. The address will be copied to the "Ad - dress" field, and the Add button will change to Update .

4 Chapter 4 PC Configuration This Chapter detail s the PC Configurat ion required on the local ("Int ernal") LAN. Overview For each PC, the following may need to be configured: • TCP/IP ne.
PC Configuration Checking TCP/IP Settings - Windows NT4.0 1. Select Control Panel - Net work , and, on the Protocols tab, select the TCP/IP prot ocol, as shown below. Figure 16: Windows NT4.0 - TCP/IP 2. Click the Properties button to see a screen like the one below.

Obtain an IP address from a DHCP Server This is the default Windows setting.

PC Configuration • Select Create Loca tion , and change the location name from "New Locality" to "Wireless- N Broadband Router". • Click Edit Lo cation . Select TCP/IP for the Network field. (Leave the Phone Number blank.) • Click Save , then OK .
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide Other Unix Systems To access the Internet via the Wireless-N Broadband Router: • Ensure the "Gateway" field for your network card is set to the IP Address of t he Wireless- N Broadband Router. • Ensure your DNS (Name Server) settings are correct.
PC Configuration Wireless Station Configuration This section applies t o all Wireless stations wishi ng to use the Wireless-N Broadband Router's Access Point, regardless of the o perating system which is used on the client.

PC Configuration To connect: • Check the checkbox Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network, even though it is not secure . • The Connect button will then be av ailable. Click the Connect butt on, and wait a few seconds for the connection to be establi shed.

PC Configuration • For the Network key and Confirm network key , enter the default key value used on the Wireless-N Broadband Router. (Windows will de termine if 64bit or 128bit encryption is used.) • The Key index mus t match the default key index on the Wireless-N B roadband Router.
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide If using WPA-PSK Data Encryption If WPA-PSK data encryption has been enabled on the Wireless-N B roadband Router, it does not matter which network is selected on th e screen below. Just click the Advanced button.

5 Chapter 5 Operation and Status This Chapter details the operation of the Wirele ss-N Broadband Router and the status screens. For Details of operat ion in Access Point mode, see Chap- ter 8 - Access Point Mode. Operation - Router Mode Once both the Wireless-N Broadband Router a nd the PCs are configured, operation is automatic.
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide Data - Status Screen Internet Connection Method Displays the current connect ion method, as set i n the Setup Wizard . Connection Status This indicates the current status of the Internet C onnection • Active - Connection exist s • Idle - No current connection, but no error has been detected.
Operation and Status Firmware Version The version of the current firmware installed. Current Time It displays the current time of the system. Buttons Connection Details Click this button to open a sub-window and view a deta iled description of the current connecti on.

6 Chapter 6 Advanced Features This Chapter explains when and how t o use the Wireless-N Broadband Router's "Advanced" Features. Overview The following advanced features are provided: .
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide • If the DMZ feature is enabled, you must enter IP address of the PC to be used as the "DMZ PC". The "DMZ PC" is effectively outside the Firew all, mak- ing it more vulnerable to attacks. For this reason, y ou should only enable the DMZ feature when required.
Advanced Features Data - URL Filter Screen Current Filter Strings Current Filter Strings The list contains the curren t list of items to block. • To add to the list, use the "Add" opti on below. • To delete an entry, select it and click Delete button.
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide Dynamic DNS (Domain Name Server) This free service is very usef ul when combined with the Virtual Server feature. It allows Internet users to connect to your Vi rtual Serv ers using a URL, rather than an IP Address.
Advanced Features DDNS Data Host Name Enter the domain name allocated to you by the DDNS Service. If you have more than one nam e, enter the name y ou wish to use. User Name Enter your Username for the DDNS Service. (TZO.com uses your E- mail address.

Advanced Features Port Trigger If you use Internet applicat ions which use non- standard connections or port numbers, you m ay find that they do not function co rrectly because they are bloc ked by the Wireless-N Broadband Router's firewall . In this case, you can define the appli cation as a "Port Trigger".
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide Outgoing Ports • Type - Select the protocol (TCP or UDP) used when you send data to the remote system or service. • Start - Enter the beginning of the range of port num bers used by the application server, for dat a you send to it.
Advanced Features Single Port Forwarding This feature allows you to make Servers on your LAN accessible to Internet users. Norm ally, Internet users would not be able to access a server on your LAN because: • Your Server does not have a valid external IP Address.
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide Internal Port Enter the port num bers which the Server software is configured t o use. Protocol Select the protocol (TCP or UDP) used by the Server. IP Address Enter the desired IP address. Enabled Use this to Enable or Disable support for this Server, as required.
Advanced Features Port Range Forwarding This feature allows you to make Servers on your LAN accessible to Internet users. Norm ally, Internet users would not be able to access a server on your LAN bec.
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide QoS The QoS (Quality of Service) feature allo ws you specify priorities for different traffic. Lower priority traffic will be slowed down to allow greater throughput or less delay for high priority traffic. An example QoS screen is shown below.
Advanced Features Category • Applicatio ns: • Add a New Application (Once selected, please complete the following setups.) • Ip /Net: Enter the IP address. • Rate: En ter the desired rate value. • Prio rity: Select the desired option (High, Normal, Low) • Direct: Select Upstream or Downstream as required.
7 Chapter 7 Advanced Administration This Chapter explains the settings avail able via the "Administration" section of the menu. Overview Normally, it is not necessary to use these scr eens, or change any settings.
Advanced Administration PC Database The PC Database is used whenever you need to select a PC (e.g. for the "DMZ" PC). • It eliminates the need to enter IP addresses.
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide PC Database (Admin) This screen is displaye d if the "Advanced " button on the PC Dat abase is clicked. Advanced Administration IP Address Select the appropriate opt ion: • Automatic - The PC is set to be a DHCP client (Windows: "Ob- tain an IP address automatically"). The Wireless-N Broad band Router will allocate an IP address to th is PC when requested to do so.
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide Config File This feature allows you to downl oad the current settings from the Wireless-N Broadband Router, and save them t o a file on your PC. You can restore a previously-downloaded confi guration file to t he Wireless-N Broadband Router, by uploading i t to the Wireless-N Broadband Rout er.
Advanced Administration Logs The Logs record various types of activit y on the Wireless-N Broadband Router. Thi s data is useful for troubleshooting, but enabling all logs will generate a large amount of data and adversely affect performance.
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide Buttons There are three (3) buttons • Refresh - Update the log data. • Clear Log - Clear the log, and restart it. This makes new messages easier to read. • Send Log - E-mail the log immediately. This is only func- tional if the E-mail screen has been configured.
Advanced Administration E-Mail This screen allows you to E-mail Logs and Alerts. A sample screen is show n below. Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide Upgrade Firmware The firmware (software) in t he Wireless-N Broadband Router can be upgraded using your Web Browser. You must first downl oad the upgrade file, then select Upgrade Fi rmware on the Administra- tion menu.
8 Chapter 8 Access Point Mode This Chapter explains configuration and operation when in "Access Point". Overview There are two modes available on the Access Point screen. • Router - In this mode, this device can provide shared Int ernet Access to all your LAN users.

Access Point Mode Broadcast Name This indicates whether or not t he SSID is Broadcast. This setti ng is on the Wireless screen. MAC Address The MAC (physical) address of the Wireless Access Point. System Device Name The current name of the Rout er. Th is name is also the "hostname" for users with an "@Home" ty pe connection.
A Appendix A Troubleshooting This Appendix covers the most likely probl ems and their solutions. Overview This chapter covers some comm on problems that m ay be encountered whil e using the Wire- less-N Broadband Router and som e possible soluti ons to them.
Appendix A - Troubleshooting working correctly. Problem 2: Some applications do not run properly when using the Wireless-N Broadband Router. Solution 2: The Wireless-N Broadband Router processes the data passing t hrough it, so it is not transparent.

B Appendix B About Wireless LANs This Appendix provides some background informati on about using Wireless LANs (WLANs). Modes Wireless LANs can work in either of two (2) m odes: • Ad-hoc • Infrastructure Ad-hoc Mode Ad-hoc mode does not require an Access Poin t or a wired (Ethernet) LAN.
Wireless-N Broadband Router User Guide Channels The Wireless Channel sets the radio frequency used for com muni cation. • Access Points use a fixed Channel. You can se lect the Channel used. This allo ws you to choose a Channel which provides the least i nterference and best performance.
Appendix B - About Wireless LANs WPA2-PSK This is a later versi on of WPA (WPA-PSK). The major change is the use of AES (Advanced Encryption System ) for protecting data. AES i s very secure, considered to be unbreakable. The PSK (Pre-shared Key) must be entered on each Wireless station.
