9-1 9 T roubleshooting Chaparral T echn ical Support For assistance co nfiguring and using y our Chaparral product, contact your autho rized distributor or C haparral technical support at: support@chaparralnet.co m. R esolutions to commo n problem s you may en counter are described in the foll owing sections.
G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide 9-2 Problem: Nothin g is displayed on the terminal emulator screen. The probab l e cause of this p roblem is a bad RS-232 cable con n ection or swappe d transmit/receive lines. If th e cable is properly con nected on both ends, try a nu l l modem adapter that will reverse the RS-232 transmit and receive signals.
Tr oubleshooting 9-3 The default setting is 1% backoff. This default allows you to easily work with drives that have the same no minal capacity , but different actual cap aci ties. The backof f percentage af fects all arrays created on the con troller after you set the percentage.
G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide 9-4 conflict with any other dev ices on the host SCSI channel. If you have a l ong SCSI cable, try a differen t or shorter cab l e. Problem: O nly one array is displa yed during host SCSI BIOS scan. Check to assure that LUN s upport is enabled.
Tr oubleshooting 9-5 Problem: Control ler failed the onboard me mory test. When this failure occ u rs, it means the internal C PU memory failed . Replace the controller to cor rect the problem. Problem: Sys tem hangs at Loading Bridg e during BFLU Load er Menu.
G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide 9-6 Problem: The c ontroller ’ s ST A TUS LED is on but there is no RS-23 2 display . (The controller’ s ST A TUS LED is on the controller board and is only visible if you open your e nclosure or if it is connected to a status LED on you r enclosure .
Tr oubleshooting 9-7 Wa r n i n g s W arning events let you know that s omething related to the controller or an array has a problem . Y ou shou ld correct the prob lem as soon as possible. T abl e 9-1 below defines each war n ing event and r ecommends the action you shou ld take.
G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide 9-8 Errors Error event s let you know t hat something related the enclosure, controller , or di sk drives has failed and req uires immediate attention. T able 9-2 defines each error event and recommen ds the action you shou l d take.

G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide 9-10 Using the information in T able 9-3 and T able 9-4 below , you can see that this is a medium er ror , unrecovered read error—recommend reassign ment. T able 9-3 list s some of the mo st common SCSI s ense key descript ions (i n hexadecimal).
Tr oubleshooting 9-1 1 Disk Channel Errors Disk channel errors are similar to disk detected errors , except they are detected b y the controller , instead of the disk drive. Some d is k channel erro rs are displayed as text strings , others are displayed as hexadeci mal codes.
G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide 9-12 The example below shows a disk chan nel error displaying the hexadecimal code. See T able 9-5 below for a l ist of erro r code descriptions. Most disk channel errors are informational since the co ntroller issues retries to correct any prob l em.
Tr oubleshooting 9-13 V oltage and T em perature Errors and W arnings Most voltage and temper ature errors occur due to the en cl osure. Check the en cl osure configurat ion first. ❒ 43 I /O req uest was abo rted becaus e of third-p arty chann el reset (displaye d as “Abort 3PRST”).

A-1 A Array Basics Chaparral’ s RAID controllers let you set up and manage disk arrays. A disk ar ray is a group of di sks that appears to the system as a single virtual disk. This is accomplished throug h softwar e resident in the RAI D contro ller .
G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide A-2 RAID 0 ar rays do not stor e redundant data, so they are not true R AID appl icat io ns. If one disk fa ils, the en tire array fail s and all arr ay data is los t. The fault-to lerance of a RAID 0 array , therefore, is less than that of any single disk in the array .
Array Basics A-3 RAID 4 RAID 4 is similar to RAID 3 in that the redundant in formation is achieved in the form of pari ty data. The us er data is distrib uted across all b u t one of the disks. The controlle r uses a single, dedicated par ity drive for data p rotection.
G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide A-4 V olume Sets A volume set is the ability to create a host-accessible LUN that maps to a single disk in the array , similar to JBOD. V olume sets are non- redundant and have a capacity slightly less than the physical disk they are created from.
Array Basics A-5 RAID 3 3 Block-level data striping with dedica ted pa rity drive Excellent performance for larg e , sequen tial data req uests Not well-suited for transaction- orient ed networ k appl.
G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide A-6 Mixing Disks f rom Differen t Manufacturers or with Differen t Capacities An array can co ntain different models of S CSI disks, even disks with different capacities; for example, an array can include a 4-GB disk and a 9-GB disk.
G-1 Glossary Address— An address is a data structure or logi cal convention used to i dentify a unique entity , such as a particular process or network device. Arbitrated loop physical address (AL_P A)— An AL_P A is a 1-byte value used in an arbitrated loop topology .
G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide G-2 FC Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL)— FC-AL i s one of three FC t opolo g ies in which ports use arbitration to establish a point-to-point circuit. Arbitrated loops allo w multipl e ports to be connected serially in a singl e loop.
Glos sary G-3 Initiator mode— Initiator mode is the configuration mode of a device in which an FC or SCSI initiator requests operations to be performed by an FC or SCSI target device. Logical unit number or lo gic al unit (LUN)— A LUN is a subdiv ision of a SCSI target.
G- and K- Series User ’ s Guide G-4 SCSI bus— A SCSI bus provides a means of transferr ing data between SC SI devices. A SCSI bus is ei ther an 8- or 16 -bit bus that supports up to 8 or 16 de vices, including itself.
Glos sary G-5 a terminator be p l aced on the 6 8-pin high-density S CSI connector on the last SCSI peripheral. Data errors may occur in a SCSI bus that is not terminated. T opology— A networ k topology refers to t he physical layo ut of nodes on a networ k.
