7 Before Using the Printer Hint s for Handling the Paper Source This printer offers two paper sources to load printi ng paper; the Rear Tray (A) and the Front T ray (B). Here are some hints for handling these paper sources according to how you are using them.

23 Routine Main tenance Routine Maintenance Replacing an Ink T ank This section explains the way to confirm the in k status and the procedure to replace ink tanks. When ink runs out or other errors occur , the ALARM lamp flashes orange to inform you of the error .
24 Routine Maintenance z With the Computer Scr een Y ou can confirm the status of each ink tank on the printer status monitor (Windows) and Cano n IJ Printer Utility (Macintosh). (A) Confirm whether any sy mbols are displayed here. Ink is low . Y ou can continue printing for a while, but we recommend you to have a new ink tank available.
25 Routine Main tenance Replacing Ink T anks When ink tanks run out of ink, replace them using the following steps. 1 Open the Front T ray . 2 Make sure that the printer is on, and then open the T op Cove r . The Print Head Holder moves to the center .
26 Routine Maintenance 4 Prepare the replacement tank. (1) Remove the new ink tank from its p ackaging. (2) Pull the orange tape (A) in the direction of the arrow to peel off the protective film. (3) Remove the film (B) completely . (4) Remove the orange protective cap from the bottom of the ink tank.
27 Routine Main tenance 5 Install the ink tank. (1) Insert the front end of the ink tank into the Print Head. Make sure the position of the tank matches the label (A). (2) Press on the mark on the ink tank until the ink tank snaps firmly into place. (3) Make sure that the ink lamp lights up red.
28 Routine Maintenance Keeping the Best Printing Result s T o avoid drying of the Print Head and cl ogging of the no zzles, note the following. When Y ou T urn Off the Printer Follow the procedure below to turn o ff the printer . (1) Press the POWER button to turn off the printer .
29 Routine Main tenance When Printing Becomes Fain t or Colors Are Incorrect When printing becomes faint or colors are incorrect even if ink r emains in the ink tanks, the print head nozzles are probably clogged. Print the nozzle c heck pattern to confirm the condition of the nozzles and then perform Print Head Cleaning.
30 Routine Maintenance Printing the Nozzle Check Pattern Print the nozzle check pattern to determine whether the ink ejects properly from the print head nozzles. 1 Make sure that the printer is on and then load a sheet of A4 or Letter-si zed plain paper in the Rear T ray .

32 Routine Maintenance Examining the Nozzle Check Pattern Examine the nozzle check pattern output by the printer , and clean the Print He ad if necessary . 1 Confirm the printed nozzle ch eck pattern. (1) If lines of this pattern are missing, the Black print head nozzle needs cleanin g.
33 Routine Main tenance Print Head Cleaning Clean the Print Head if lines are missing or if white streaks appear in the printed nozzle check pattern. Cleaning unclogs the nozzle s and restores the print head condition. Note that cleaning the Print Head causes used ink to be absorbed in t he ink absor ber .
34 Routine Maintenance (6) Confirm the displayed message and click Print Check Pattern . The nozzle check pattern is printed. Do not perform any other operations until t he nozzle check pattern finishes printing. 5 Check the print head condition with the printed nozzle check pattern, and take appropriate action.

38 Routine Maintenance Aligning the Print Head If ruled lines are printed misaligned or print result s are otherwise unsatisfactory , adjust the print head position. 1 Make sure that the printer is on a nd then l oad two sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plai n paper in the Rear T ray .

44 Routine Maintenance Cleaning Y our Printer This section describes the cleaning procedure that is needed to maintain your printer. Cleaning the Exterior of the Printer Be sure to use a soft cloth such as eyeglas ses cleaning cloth and wipe off dirt on the surface with it gently .
45 Routine Main tenance 7 Confirm the displayed message an d click OK . The paper that is loaded in the printer will feed through the pr inter and be ejected.
46 Routine Maintenance If the problem is not resolved, wipe the paper feed roller (A) located on the right sid e inside the Rear T ray with a moistened cotton swab or the li ke. Rotate the roller (A) manually as you clean it. Do not touch the roller with your fingers; rota te it with the cotton swab.
47 Routine Main tenance 4 Manually rotate the paper feed roller toward you and apply a cotton swab or the like to wipe off dust or st ain. (A) Paper feed roller 5 Reattach the Rear Cover . Hold the Rear Cover so that the Rear C over Lever comes to the left.
48 Routine Maintenance Cleaning the Inside of the Printer If the printed paper is smudged, the inside of the printer may be dirty . T o always get b est quality printing result, per iodical cleaning of the inside of the printe r is recommended.

Open the T op Cover of the printer to confirm how the ink lamps light or flash, and then take the appropriate action depending on the error condition.
57 Troubleshooting Printed Surface Is Scratched/Paper Is Smudge d Cause Action Paper Feed Roller is dirty . Clean the Paper Feed Roller. Cleaning the Paper Feed Roller will wear the roller , so perform this procedure only when necessary . For details on cleaning, see “Cleaning t he Paper Feed Roller (Roller Cleaning)” on page 44.
58 Troubleshooting Paper is curled. For Plain Paper Turn the p aper over and reload it to print on the other side. Leaving the paper loaded in the Rear Tray for a long time may cause the paper to curl. If this happens, load the paper with the other side facing up.
59 Troubleshooting Printer Does Not S tart Cause Action The printer is not powered on. / The power cord is no connected. Make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into the Power Cord Connector of the printer. Plug the power cord all the way in, since it may be difficult to plug.
60 Troubleshooting Printer Moves But Ink Is Not Ejected Cause Action Print Head nozzles are clogged. Print the nozzle check pattern to check for uneven ink output.
61 Troubleshooting Paper Does Not Feed Properly Paper Does Not Feed from the Paper Source S pecified in the Printer Driver Cause Action Printing on inappropriate type of paper . Check to see if the paper you are printing on is not too thick or curled.
62 Troubleshooting Paper Jams Cause Action Paper jammed in the Paper Output Slot, the Rear Tray , or the Front Tray . Remove the paper following the procedure below. (1) Slowly pull the paper out, either from a paper source or from the Paper Output Slot, whichever is easier.
