2 Before Printing Before Printing T urning the Printer On and Off T urn on the printer before pr inting. T urning on the Printer Before turning on the printer , confirm the following. z The FINE Cartridges a re installed properly . z The printer is connected to your computer (or a compatible device).
3 Before Printing T urning off the Printe r 1 T o turn off the printer , press the POWER button. When the POWER lamp stops flashing, the printer is turned off. Import ant About the Power Pl ug When removing t he power plug after tu ring off the printer , be sure to confir m that the POWER la m p is n o t lit.
4 Before Printing Loading Printing Paper This section describes how to load printing paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder. Using S pecialty Media Canon recommends that you use Canon genuine media to ensure optimal print qua lity .
5 Before Printing Paper Handling z Recommended Paper and Requirements Paper with a Model Number is Canon specialty media. Y ou may not be able to purchase some Canon genuine papers depending on your co untry . *1 Paper is not sold in the US by Model Number .
6 Before Printing *3 When loading paper in stacks, the print side ma y be marked as it is fed in or sheets may be stuck to one another causing them not to be f ed proper ly . In this case, load one sheet at a time. *4 Y ou can specify the print setting easily by using the Easy-Photo Print provided with the Setup CD-ROM .
7 Before Printing Loading Paper Import ant z When performi ng duplex print ing, pay great at tention to the dust and stain on the ar ea (desk, etc.) where the printed pa per is ejected. Pri nting with dust an d stain remainin g on this area can have a bad effect on the printi ng result an d printer.
8 Before Printing 1 Flatten the four corners of the paper before loading it. 2 Prepare to load paper . (1) Open the Paper Support. (2) Adjust the position of the Paper Thickness Lever . Set it to the right when printing on envelopes or T -shirt transfers, and left when printing on any other type of paper .
9 Before Printing Loading Envelopes Use either European DL or US Comm. Env . #10-sized envelope. 1 Load the envelopes against the righ t side of the Auto Sheet Feeder . Load with the address side facing UP and the re ar flaps DOWN on the left. Up to 10 envelopes can be loaded at once.
10 Printing from Your Computer Printing from Y our Computer This section describes the proc edure for basic pr inting. When prin ting photograph s, you can also use Easy-PhotoPrint to easily specify print settings. Easy-P hotoPrint is provided on the Setup CD- ROM .
11 Printing from Your Computer 5 Print the document. (1) Click Print (or OK ). Printing begins. Do not open the Front Cover while printing. Note z T o confirm the pape r size, click th e Page Set up tab.
12 Printing from Your Computer Printing with Macintosh 1 T urn on the printer and load the paper in the printer . See “Loading Printing Paper” on page 4. 2 Create a document or open a fi le to print using an appropriate app lication software. 3 Select Paper Size .

14 Routine Maintenance Routine Maintenance When Printing Becomes Fain t or Colors Are Incorrect When printing becomes faint or colors are incorre ct, the print head nozzles on FINE Cartridges are probably clogged. Print the nozzle check pattern to confirm the co ndition of the nozzles and then perform Print Head Cleaning.
15 Routine Main tenance Printing the Nozzle Check Pattern Print the nozzle check pattern to determine whether the ink ejects properly from the print head nozzles. 1 Make sure that the printer is on, lo ad a shee t of A4 or Letter-sized plai n paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder.
16 Routine Maintenance 3 Print the nozzle check pattern. (1) Select T est Print in the pop-up menu. (2) Click Nozzle Check . (3) Confirm the displayed message and click Print Check Pattern . The nozzle check pattern is printed. Do not open the Front Cover while printing.
17 Routine Main tenance Examining the Nozzle Check Pattern Examine the nozzle check pattern output by the printer , and clean the Print He ad if necessary . 1 Confirm the printed nozzle ch eck pattern. (1) If lines of this pattern are missing, the print head nozzle needs cleaning.
18 Routine Maintenance 2 When cleaning is necessary , click Clea ning on the Pattern Check dialog box. T o proceed to cleaning of the Pr int Head, go to step 3-(3) of the Windows or Macintosh Print Head Cleaning procedure , depending on your platform.
19 Routine Main tenance Print Head Cleaning Clean the Print Head if lines are missing or if white streaks appear in the printed nozzle check pattern. Cleaning unclogs the nozzle s and restores the print head condition. Note that cleaning the Print Head causes used ink to be absorbed in t he ink absor ber .
20 Routine Maintenance 2 Open the Canon IJ Printer Utility dialog box. Refer to “Opening the Canon IJ Pr inter Utility (Macintosh)” in the User ’s Guide on-screen manual. 3 St a r t Print He ad Cleaning . (1) Make sure that Cleaning is selected in the pop-up menu.
21 Routine Main tenance Print Head Deep Cleaning If print quality does not impr ove by standard Print Head Cleaning, try Print Head Deep Cleaning, which is a more powerful process. Note that cl eaning the Print Head causes used ink to be absorbed in the ink absorber .
22 Routine Maintenance 3 S tart Print Head Deep Cl eaning. (1) Make sure that Cleaning is selected in the pop-up menu. (2) Click Deep Cleaning . (3) Confirm the displayed message and click OK . Print Head Deep Cleaning starts when the POWER lamp starts flashing green.
23 Routine Main tenance Aligning the Print Head If ruled lines are printed misaligned or print result s are otherwise unsatisfactory , adjust the print head position. 1 Make sure that the printer is on, and then load a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder .
24 Routine Maintenance 6 Look at the printout. From the patterns , select the most even, least irregular patterns for each column and enter their numb ers.
25 Routine Main tenance 4 Click Print Head A lignment . 5 Confirm the displayed message an d click OK . The print head alignment pattern is printed. 6 Look at the printout. From the patterns , select the most even, least irregular patterns for each column and enter their numb ers.
26 Routine Maintenance Replacing a FINE Cartridge If there is no improvement with the quality of pr inting following such maintenance as Print Head Cleaning, a FINE Cartridge is probably empty .
27 Routine Main tenance Open the Canon IJ Printer Utility to check the ink level information. (1) Open the Canon IJ Printer Utility . Refer to “Opening the Canon IJ Printer Utility ( Macintosh)” in the User ’s Guide on-screen manual. The Canon IJ Printer Utility is displayed.
28 Routine Maintenance z The resulting print quality may not be satisfacto ry , if printing is continued under this condition. *1 FINE Cartridge with low ink If the ALARM lamp flash es orange four times z Ink has run out. Replace the ink cartridge and close the co ver .
29 Routine Main tenance z Canon recommends to use ne w genuine Canon cartridges in order to obtain optimum qualities. z Please be advised that Canon shall not be liable for any malfunction or trouble caused by continuation of printing under the ink out condition.
30 Routine Maintenance z The function for detecting the rema ining ink level will be disable d. Replace the empty ink cartridge immediately afte r the printing. T he resulting print quality is not satisfactory , if printing is continued under the ink out condition.
31 Routine Main tenance Note Setting of FINE Cartr idges If a FINE Cartridge runs out of ink, you can print with e ither Color or Black FINE Ca rtridge only for a while. Howeve r the same prin ting qualit y cannot be exp ected comparing to printing wi th both cartridge s.
32 Routine Maintenance Replacing FINE Ca rtridges When FINE Cartridges run out of ink, re place them using the followin g steps. Import ant Handling FINE Cartridges z Once the pro tective tape is re moved, do not touch the el ectrical contacts or Pri nt Head Nozzl es on a FINE C artridge.
33 Routine Main tenance 1 Make sure that the printer is on, and then open the Fro nt Cover . The FINE Cartridge Holder moves to the left. 2 Remove the empty FINE Cartridge. (1) Push down the FINE Cartridge. (2) Remove the FINE Cartridge. Caution z Do not hold th e FINE Cartridge Ho lder to stop o r move it.
34 Routine Maintenance 3 Prepare the replacement cartridge. (1) Unpack a new FINE Cartridge and remove the orange protective tape (A) gently . 4 Install the FINE Cartridge.
35 Routine Main tenance 5 Close the Front Cove r . Note z If the ALARM lamp still fla shes orange af ter the Front C over is closed , see “ALARM L amp Flashes Oran ge” on page 50. z When you start print ing after replaci ng the FINE Cartri dge, Print Head Cleaning is per formed automatica lly .
36 Routine Maintenance Keeping the Best Printing Result s T o avoid drying of the Print Head and cl ogging of the no zzles, note the following. When Y ou T urn Off the Prin ter Follow the procedure below to turn o ff the printer . (1) Press the POWER button to turn off the printer .
37 Routine Main tenance Cleaning Y our Printer Cleaning the Paper Feed Rollers (Roller Cleaning) Clean the paper feed rollers if paper is not fed properly . Cleaning the Paper Feed Roller of the Auto Sheet Feeder consumes it, so perform this only when necessary .
38 Routine Maintenance 6 When the message appears, load three or more sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder . Set the Paper Thickness Lever to the left. For det ails on the Paper Thickness L ever , refer to “Front View” in “Main Components” of the User’s Guide on-screen manual.

45 Troubleshooting Printed Paper Curls or Has Ink Blot s Print Head nozzles are clogged. Print the nozzle check pattern to check for uneven ink output. z If the nozzle check pattern does not print out properly Clean the Print Head and then print the nozzle check pattern to check that ink is ejecting properly .
46 Troubleshooting Printed Surface Is Scratched/Paper Is Smudge d Cause Action Paper Feed Roller is dirty . Y ou may need to clean the Pape r Feed Rollers of the Auto Sheet Feeder. Cleaning the Paper Feed Roller of the Auto Sheet Feeder consumes it, so perform this procedure only when necessary .
47 Troubleshooting Printing Does Not St art Inappropriate Paper Thickness Lever setting. Adjust the position of the Paper Thickness Lever according to the type of paper you are printing on.
48 Troubleshooting Paper Does Not Feed Properly Cause Action Printing on inappropriate type of paper . Check to see if the paper you are printing on is not too thick or curled. See “Media T ypes Y o u Cannot Use” on page 6. Paper Feed Roller is dirty .
49 Troubleshooting Paper Jams Cause Action Paper jammed in the Paper Output Slot and the Auto Sheet Feeder. Remove the paper following the procedure below. (1) Slowly pull the paper out, either from the Auto Sheet Feeder or from the Paper Output Slot, whichever is ea sier .
50 Troubleshooting ALARM Lamp Flashes Orange ALARM Lamp Flashes Orange When a printer error occurs, the A LARM lamp flashes orange as shown below . The number of flashes indicates the type of error that has oc curred. Count the flashes and take the appropriate action to correct the error .
51 Troubleshooting POWER Lamp Flashes Green and ALARM La mp Flashes Orange Alternately Disconnect the printer cable from the printer, turn the printer of f, and then unplug the printer from the power supply . Plug the print er back in and turn the printer back on after leaving it for a while.
52 Troubleshooting Error No.: 300 Is Displayed Error No.: 1700/1710 Is Displayed Cause Action The printer is not ready . Make sure that the printer is turned on, and that it is connected secu rely to the computer . If the POWER lamp is off, turn the printer on.
