Ap pe ndix B: Digital A udio Pr imer nderstanding the fundamentals of sound is the first step in learning about digital audio . I n this primer , we ’ll introduce the basics o f sound so you can w ork more effectiv ely w ith Adobe A udition and the r est of your digital audio or video toolkit.
Digital Audio Pr imer W ave f o rm s Am p litude reflects the change in p ressure fr om the peak of the wav eform to the tr ough. Cy c le describes the amount of time it takes a wa veform t o return to the same amplitude level. Fr equency describes the number of cycles per sec ond, where one H ertz (Hz) equals one cycle per sec ond.
A DOBE AUDITION 1.5 U ser Guide I n-phase waves r einforce each other . Sometimes the peaks of one wa veform match up with the troughs of another . The peaks and troughs will cancel each other out, resulting in no wa veform at all. Suc h wav eforms are said t o be 180 degrees out of phase.
Digital Audio Pr imer Tw o simple waves combine to create a complex wave. A nalog audio A microp hone works by c onv erting the pressure wa ves of sound into changes in voltage on a wire.
A DOBE AUDITION 1.5 U ser Guide Tw o sample rates A. Low sample r ate that distorts the or iginal sound wave. B . Hi gh sample rate that perfectly reproduces the orig inal sound wave. To repr oduce a give n frequency , the sampling rate m ust be at least twice that frequency .
Digital Audio Pr imer A mplitude resol ution is just as important as freque ncy resolution. H igher bit depth means gr eat er dynamic range, a lowe r noise floor , and higher fidelity . When a wa veform is sampled, each sample is assigned the amplitude value c losest to the original analog wav e.
A DOBE AUDITION 1.5 U ser Guide An audio file on your har d drive, such as a W A V file, c onsists of a small header indicating sample rate and bit depth, and then a long series of numbers, one for each sample.

Ap pe ndix C: Glossar y A ACM (Audio C ompression M anager) A Micr oso ft tec hnolog y that enables W indows applications to c ompress and decompr ess files in a variet y of formats, such as DSP Gr oup Tr ueSpeech and GSM 6.10. Some A CM formats install with W indo ws, while othe rs install w ith software applications.
Glossary Attack The first part of the sound that y ou hear . Some sounds (lik e pianos and drums) hav e a very fast attack; the loudest portion of the sound occurs ve r y quickly . A sound with a slow attack rat e (such as a soft string section) slowly incr eases in volume.
A DOBE AUDITION 1.5 U ser Guide Bit Pa rt of the numbering system used in digital data. B its are combined in gr oups to form digital words, which r epresent the changing amplitude val ues of an analog signal. B it r esolution describes the number of bits used in each word, det ermining the number of possible amplitude values.
Glossary Clip A visual representation of individual audio, video, or MIDI files in Adobe A udition ’ s M ultitrack V iew . Clipping In digital audio, distortion that occurs when the amplitude of a sig nal ex ceeds the maximum lev el for the current bit resolution (for example, 256 in 8-b it audio).
A DOBE AUDITION 1.5 U ser Guide DC offset Some sound car ds recor d with a slig ht DC offset, in which direct current is introduced int o the signal, causing the c enter of the waveform t o be offset from the zer o point (the cent er line in the wav eform display).
Glossary Dry Us ed to describe an audio signal w ithout an y signal processing s uch as reve rb; the op posite of W et. DSP See “Digital Signal Proc essing (DSP)” on page 279. DVD (Digital V ideo Disc) A storage medium similar to a c ompact disc (CD), but with mu ch higher bandwidth and storage capabilities.
A DOBE AUDITION 1.5 U ser Guide Flushing The pr ocess Adobe A udition performs when it copies the audio data fr om a wav eform file to Adobe A udition ’ s temp folder so that the original file can be closed. This allows the file t o be renamed, deleted, or opened ex clusiv ely by another application.
Glossary L Lev el Meters Ad obe A udition ’ s Level M eters ar e found by default along the bott om of the application window , and they ar e used to mo nitor the v olume of incoming and outgoing signals. The r ed clip indicator t o the rig ht of the meters will light up and remain lit when levels ex ceed the maxim um of 0 dB.
A DOBE AUDITION 1.5 U ser Guide Miniplug A common name for 1/8-inc h plugs and jacks, sometimes known as minijacks . On the most common sound car ds, miniplug jacks pr ovide analog audio inputs and outputs. Mix dow n The process of combining the output of se veral tracks in M ultitrack V iew to create a new st ereo wa veform.
Glossary Normalize To adjust the highest peak of a wav eform to a certain percentage r elative t o the digital maximum, 0 dBFS, thereby raising or lo wering all other peaks acc ordingly . Ty pically , audio is no rmalized to 100% to ac hieve maximum v olume, but A dobe A udition lets you no rmalize to an y percentage.
A DOBE AUDITION 1.5 U ser Guide Pink noise No ise with a spectral frequency of 1/f, producing the most natural-sounding generated noise. By equalizing pink noise, y ou can simulate rainfall, waterfalls, wind, a r ushing river , and other natural sounds.
Glossary R RCA cable Sometimes called a phono cable, R CA cables ha ve R CA plugs or jacks at either end and are normally used to c onnect stereo syst em components, such as r eceiv ers, CD play ers, and cassette decks.
A DOBE AUDITION 1.5 U ser Guide S S/N ratio Sig nal-to-noise ratio describes the differenc e between the highest signal level before distortion and the a verage level of the noise floor . I n most analog systems, such as microp hone preamps, the S/N ratio is around 92 dB .
Glossary T T empo The rhythmic speed of music, normally measured in bpm. (See “Beats per minute (bpm)” on page 276.) T imecode An audio or digital sig nal that synchr onizes time between multiple d ev ices. The most common forms ar e SMPTE and MIDI timecode.
A DOBE AUDITION 1.5 U ser Guide W ave fo rm display The area of Edit V iew in which y ou view and edit audio data. By default this audio material appears as a wa veform, but you can view it in spectral form by ch oosing V iew > Spectr al V iew .
