1-1 1 Intr oduction In this Chapter Document Overview This section r eviews the contents of the Adaptec SCSI RAID Softwar e User ’ s Guide and includes an introduction to the major features of your controller , as well as s ome of the terminol ogy us ed.
1-2 Adaptec SCSI RAID 2120S/2200S Software User’ s Guide Chapter 3, Adaptec Storage Manager-Br owser Edition , provides an in- depth look at Adaptec Storage Ma nage r , an easy-to-use storage configuration application that supports both local and remote management.
1-3 Introduction Adaptec RAID controllers support the following types of array: RAID-0 A RAID-0 is cr eated by striping data ac ross two or more d isk drives.
1-4 Adaptec SCSI RAID 2120S/2200S Software User’ s Guide The cost of this redundancy is in efficient use of capacity , because all data is written to both drives, only half of the total capacity is available.
1-5 Introduction RAID-10 A RAID-10 is an example of a dual-level array and is created by using two or more equal-sized RAID-1s to cr eate a RAID-0. The top level RAID-0 shares the load among the second level RAID-1s, impr oving both r ead and write performance.
1-6 Adaptec SCSI RAID 2120S/2200S Software User’ s Guide RAID-50 A RAID-50 is a dual-l evel array created by usin g two or more equal-sized RAID-5s to create a RAID-0. The top level RAID-0 shares the load among the second-level RAID-5s, impro ving both read and write perf ormance.
1-7 Introduction RAID V olu me A RAID volume is created by joining two or more single-level arrays of the same RAID type. Unli ke dual-level arrays, the arr ays in a RAID volume do not have to be of equal capacity .
1-8 Adaptec SCSI RAID 2120S/2200S Software User’ s Guide Ta b l e 1 - 1 list s the RAID type migr at ions supported by Adaptec Storage Manager . T able 1-1 Suppor te d Arra y Migrations See Chapter 3, Adaptec Storage Manager-Br owser Edition , for instructions on modifying arrays.
1-9 Introduction A utomatic Rebuild On Replacement Adaptec RAID controllers support a feature known as Automatic rebuild on replacement. This may be useful in the event of a drive failure if no hot spar e is available and the failing drive is in an SES or SAF-TE enabled drive enclo sur e.
1-10 Adaptec SCSI RAID 2120S/2200S Software User’ s Guide Adaptec RAID controllers su pported by Adaptec Storage Manager-Br owser Edition are listed in Ta b l e 1 - 2 .
2-1 2 Using Adaptec RAID Configuration In this Chapter The Adaptec RAID Configuration Utility (A RC) is an embedded BIOS utility that includes an Array Configuration Utility (A CU) that allows the creation, configur ation, and management of arrays.
2-2 Adaptec SCSI RAID 2120S/2200S Software User’ s Guide The Adaptec SCSI RAID Controlle r menu appears, pres enting the following options: ■ Array Configuration Util ity ■ SCSI Select Utility .

2-7 Using Adaptec RAID Configuration Assigning Array Pr operties Note that you cannot change array properties fr om the ACU once the array is cr eated. T o change array pr operties once the array is created, use Adaptec Storage Manager . T o assign properties to the new array: 1 In the Array Propert ies menu, select an array type and pr ess Enter .
2-8 Adaptec SCSI RAID 2120S/2200S Software User’ s Guide 4 Select the desired stripe size. Th e allowable stripe sizes are 16, 32, and 64 KB (the default). For RAID 50 arrays, 64 KB is the o n l y s t r i p e s i z e su pp or te d b y A C U . T h e d e f a u l t s tr ip e si ze gi v e s the best overall performance in most network envir onments.
2-9 Using Adaptec RAID Configuration Initializing Disk Drives If an installed disk does not appear in the disk selection list f or creating a ne w array or if it appears grayed out, you may have to initialize it befor e you can use it as part of an arr ay .
2-10 Adaptec SCSI RAID 2120S/2200S Software User’ s Guide Using the SCSI Select Utility The SCSI Select Utility enables you to change devi ce and controller settings without opening the sy stem chassis or handling the card. If you want to view or change the curr ent settings, see Starting and Exiting SCSI Select on page 2-10 .
