Figure 12 identifies the components of the printer with which you n eed to be fa miliar to load roll media in T ear-Of f mode.

Onl y thermal transfer media requires ribb on. Ribbon is not required with direct th ermal media, though it may be used to protect t he printhead from abrasion.
