GETTING STARTED 3 INTRODUCTION Check that you recei ved all of the follo wing parts. 1 T ake off the battery compar tment cover . 2 Insert the two supplied batteries (AA, R6, UM-3) accor ding to the polarity markings (+ and –) on the inside of the battery compartment.

CONNECTIONS 12 The speaker layout belo w sho ws the standard ITU-R * speaker setting. Y ou can use it to enjo y CINEMA DSP and multi-channel audio sources.
13 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Be sure to connec t the left cha nnel (L), right ch annel (R), “+” (red) and “–” ( black) properly . If the connections are f aulty , no sound will be heard from th e speakers, and if the polarity of the speake r connections is incorrect, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.
14 CONNECTIONS FRONT terminals Connect one or two front spea ker systems (6, 7) to these terminals. If you use only one front speaker system, connect it to the FR ONT A or B terminal. CENTER terminals Connect a center speaker (8) to these terminals. SURROUND terminals Connect surround speakers (4, 5) to these terminals.
15 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION ■ Connecting the speaker cab le 1 Remove ap pro ximately 10 mm (0.4 in) of insulation from the end of each speaker cable and then twist the exposed wires of the cable together to pr e vent short circuits. 2 Loosen the knob.
16 CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting the banana plug (except U .K., Eur ope and Asia models) The banana plug is a singl e-pole electric al connector widely used to terminate speak er cables. y Y ou can also use the banana plug with the PRESENCE/ZONE2 speaker terminals.
17 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Y ou can use the digital jacks to input PCM, Dolby Digital and DTS bitstreams. When y ou connect components to both the CO AXIAL and OPTICAL jacks, priority is given to th e signals input at the CO AXIAL jack. All di gital input jacks are compatible with 96-k Hz sampling digital signals.
18 CONNECTIONS ■ Audio signal flow for A U DIO OUT ( REC) This unit handles digital and analog signa ls independently . Thus, audio signals in put at the analog jacks are output only at th e analog A UDIO OUT (REC) jacks. Like wise, audio signals input at the DI GIT AL INPUT ( OPTICAL or COAXIAL) jacks are output only at the DIGIT AL OUTPUT jack.
19 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Connect your TV to the VIDEO MONITOR OUT jack, the S VIDEO MONITOR OUT jack or the COMPONENT VIDEO MONITOR OUT jacks of this unit. Do not connect this u nit or other components to the A C power suppl y until al l connections between componen ts are com plete.

24 CONNECTIONS This unit is equipped with the DOCK te rminal on the rear panel that allows you to connect a Y AMAHA iPod univ ersal dock (such as YDS-10 sold se parately) where you can station your iPod a nd control playback of your iPod using the supplied remote control.
25 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION This unit has more than enough power for an y home use. Ho wev er , if you want to add mo re po wer to the speaker output or if you want to use another amplif ier , connect an external amplif ier to the PRE OUT jacks.
26 CONNECTIONS This unit is equipped with 8 additional input jacks (FR ONT L/R, CENTER, SURROUND L/R, SURR OUND B A CK L/R and SUBWOOFER) for discrete multi-c hannel input from a multi-format player , external decoder or sound processor . Connect the output jacks on your multi-format player or external decoder to the MUL TI CH INPUT jacks.
27 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Use the VIDEO A UX jacks on the front panel to connec t a game console or a vi deo camera to this unit. Be sure to turn off the v olume of this unit and other comp onents bef o re making connections.
28 CONNECTIONS Both FM and AM indoor ante nnas are supplied with this unit. In general, these ante nnas should pr ovide suf ficient signal strength. Connect ea ch antenna correctly to the designated terminals. • Be sure to set the tuner frequency step (Asia and General models only) according to the frequen cy spacing in your area (see page 98).
29 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Once all connections are co mplete, plug the power cabl e into the A C wall outlet. ■ V OL T A GE SELECT OR (Asia and General models only) The V OL T A GE SELECT O R on the rear panel of this unit m ust be set f or y our local v oltage BEFORE plugging the power cable into the A C wall outlet.
30 CONNECTIONS If you are to use 4 or 6 ohm speakers, set “SP IMP .” to “6 Ω MIN” as follo ws BEFORE using this unit. 1 Make sure this unit is turned off .
31 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION When all connec tions are complete, turn on th is unit. ■ T u rning on this unit Press MASTER ON/OFF on the fr ont panel inwar d to the ON position to turn on this unit. • Press MAIN ZONE ON/OFF on the front panel (or ST ANDBY on the remote control) to set the main zone to the standby mode.
AUTO SETUP 32 This unit employs the YP A O (Y AMAHA Parametric Room Acoustic Optimize r) technology which lets you a void troublesome listening-ba sed speak er setup and achie v es highly accurate sound adjustme nts. The supplied optimizer microphone collects and analyzes the sound your spea kers produce in your actual listening en vironment.
33 AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION Once you hav e connected the supplied optimizer microphone to the OPTIMIZER MIC jack on the fr ont panel and hav e placed it in a suitable location in your listening room, run “A UTO SETU P” in the OSD or in the front panel display .
34 AUTO SETUP 4 Press u / d to select “SETUP” and then press j / i to select the desired setting. Choices: AU TO , RELO AD, UNDO, DEF A UL T • Select “A UT O” to automatically run the entire “A UTO SETUP” procedure. • Select “RELOAD” to re load th e last “A UTO SETUP” settings and o verr ide the pre vious settings.
35 AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION • If “E-10:INTERN AL ERR OR” appears during the testing procedure, restart f rom step 4. • If you selected “RELOAD”, “UNDO” or “DE F A UL T” in step 4, no test tones are output.
36 AUTO SETUP y If you are not satisfied with the results or want to manually adjust each parame ter , run “MANUAL SETUP” (see page 83). • If you change speakers, speake r positions, or the la yout of your listening en vironment, run “A UTO SET UP” again to recalibrate your system.
37 AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION ■ If an err or screen appear s Press u / d / j / i to select “RETR Y” or “EXIT” and then press ENTER. The following display is an example where “E-9:USER CANCEL” appears in the OSD. Choices: RETR Y , EXIT • Select “RETR Y” to retry the “A UTO SETUP” procedure.
PLAYBACK 38 Extreme caution should be exer cised when y ou play bac k CDs encoded in DTS. If y ou pla y bac k a CD encoded in DTS on a DTS-in compatible CD player , you will onl y hear some unwanted noise that ma y damage your speakers. Check whether your CD pla y er supports CDs encoded in DTS.
39 PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION 5 Rotate V OLUME on the front panel (or press V OLUME +/– on the remote control) to adjust the v olume to the de sired output level. 6 Press T ONE CONTROL on the front panel repeatedly to select “TREBLE” or “B ASS” and then r otate the PROGRAM selector to adjust the corresponding frequency response level.
USING AUDIO FEATURES 40 SILENT CINEMA allows you to enjo y multi-channel music or movie sound, includ ing Dolby Digital and DTS sources, through ordinary headphones. SILENT CINEMA acti vates automatic ally whene v er you connect headphones to the PHONES jack while listening to CINEMA D SP or HiFi DSP sound field programs (see page 71).
41 USING AUDIO FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION y “NIGHT :CINEMA” and “NIGHT :MUSIC” adjustments are stored independently . • Y ou cannot use the night liste ning modes in the following cases: – when the Pure Direct mode (see page 45) is selected.
42 USING AUDIO FEATURES 3 Press SLEEP on the remote control repeatedly to set the amount of time. Each time you press SLEEP, the front panel display changes as shown belo w . The SLEEP indicator flashe s while you are switchi ng the amount of time for the sleep timer .

44 USING AUDIO FEATURES 1 Set the component selector switch to AMP and then press ENHANCER on the remote control repeatedl y to select the desired Compressed Music Enhancer mode. The following display is sho wn in the OSD and the ENHANCER indicator lights up in the front panel display .
45 USING AUDIO FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION Y ou can mix down multi-cha nnel sources to 2 channels and enjoy playback in 2-channel stereo. Set the component selector switc h to AMP and then press STEREO on the remote contr ol repeatedly to select “2ch Stereo”.
USING VIDEO FEATURES 46 Y ou can display the form at, sampling fre quency , chann el, bit rate and flag data of the current input signal. 1 Set the component selector switch to AMP and then press SET MENU on the remote contr ol. The top “SET MENU” displa y appears in t he OSD.
47 USING VIDEO FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION Y ou can display the operating in formation of this unit on a video monitor . If you display the “SET MENU” and sound field pro gram parameter settings on a video monitor , it is much easier to see the available options and parameters than it is to read the inform ation in the front panel display .
ENJOYING SURROUND SOUND 48 If you connected surround back speakers, use this feature to enjoy 6.1/7.1-channel pl ayback for multi-ch annel sources using the Dolby Pro Logic IIx, Dolb y Digital EX or DTS-ES decoders. 1 Set the component selector switch to AMP and then press EXTD SUR.
49 ENJOYING SURROUND SOUND BAS I C OPERA TION Signals input from 2-channel sources can also be played back on multi-channels. 1 Set the compon ent selector switch to AMP and then press ST AN D ARD on the remote control repeatedl y to switch between the “SUR.
50 ENJOYING SURROUND SOUND V irtual CINEMA DSP allows you to enjoy the CINEMA DSP programs without surround speak ers. It creates virtual speakers to reproduc e the natural sound fi eld.
RECORDING 51 BAS I C OPERA TION Recording adjustments and other operati ons are performed fr om the recordi ng components. Refer to the operating instructions for those components. The DTS signal is a digital bitstrea m. Attempting to digi tally record the DTS bitstream will result in noise being rec orded.
FM/AM TUNING 52 There are 2 tuning methods: automatic a nd manual. Automatic tuning is ef fecti ve when st ation signals are strong and there is no interference.
53 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION If the signal recei ved from the station you w ant to select is weak, tune into it manually . Manually tuning into an FM st ation automa tically switches the tuner to monaural reception to increase the signal quality .
54 FM/AM TUNING Y ou ca n use the auto matic pres et tuning feature to store FM stations with strong signals up to 40 (A1 to E8: 8 preset station numbers in ea ch of the 5 preset station groups) of those stations in order . Y ou can then recall any preset statio n easily by sele cting the preset station number .
55 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION ■ A utomatic preset tu ning options Y ou can specify the preset number from which this unit stores FM stations and/or be gins tuning to ward lo wer frequencies. First carry out steps 1 through 3 in “ Automatic preset tuning ” on page 54.

In addition to making the sound liv e, these reflec tions enable us to tell where the player is situated as we ll as the size and shape of the room in which we are sitting.

76 SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS REV.TIME Re verberation time. Adjusts the amount of time taken for the dense, subsequent re verberation sound to decay by 60 dB at 1 kHz. This chan ges the apparent size of the acoustic environment over an e xtremely wide range.
