GETTING STARTED 5 INTRODUCTION English The remote control tra nsmits a directiona l infrared ray . Be sure to aim the remote control directly at the remote control sensor on the main unit during operation. • Do not spill water or other liquid s on the remote control.

CONNECTIONS 14 The speaker layout belo w shows the standard ITU-R * speaker setting. Y ou can use it to enjo y CINEMA DSP, multi-channel audio sources and THX. * ITU-R is the radio communication sector of the ITU (International T elecommunication Union).

19 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English Some of the speakers commercially available these days hav e speaker wire connections that allo w bi-wiring or bi- amplification to enhance the performance of the speaker system. This unit allo ws you to make bi-wire and bi-AMP connections to one speaker sy stem.
20 CONNECTIONS Do not connect this unit or other components to the main power until all connections between components are complete. ■ Cable indication s ■ Analog jacks Y ou can input analog signals from audio components by connecting audio pin cables to the analog jacks on this unit.
21 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English ■ A udio jacks This unit has four types of audio jacks (analog audio, digita l audio coaxial, digital aud i o optical and HDM I). Connection depends on the a vailability of audi o jacks on your other components. A UDIO jacks For con ventional analo g audio signals.
22 CONNECTIONS ■ Video jac ks This unit has four types of video jacks (composite, compone nt, S-video and HDMI). Connection depends on the av ailability of input jacks on your monitor .
23 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English This unit has the HDMI IN 1 and HDMI IN 2 jacks for digita l audio and video signal i nput as well as the HDMI OUT jack for digital audio and video signal out put. Connect the HDMI IN 1 or HDMI IN 2 jack of this unit to the HDMI OUT jack of other HDMI components (such as a D VD player).
24 CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting a D VD play er Check the availability of jacks on your D VD player and sele ct one type of connection for audio/video input/output. Howe ver , in case you make an HDMI connection, you can mak e both a udio and video connections using a single HDM I cable.

28 CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting an e xternal amplifier If you want to increase the po wer output to the speakers, or want to use another amplif ier , connect an external amplifier to the PRE OUT j acks as follows.
29 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION English Both AM and FM indoor antennas are include d with this unit. In general, these an tenn as should provide suff icient signal strength. Connect each antenna corr ectly to the designated terminals. ■ Connecting the AM loop antenna 1 Set up the AM loop antenna .
30 CONNECTIONS Connecting the A C power cable Plug the supplied A C power cable into the A C inlet after all other connections are complete, then plug the A C po wer cable to an A C wall outlet. Use the supplied A C cable. Do not use other A C power cables as doing so may result in f ire hazard or electrical shock.

AUTO SETUP 32 This receiv er employs Y AMAHA Parametric Room Acoustic Optimize r (YP A O) technology which lets you av oid troublesome listening-based speaker setup and achiev es highly accu rate sound adjustments. The supplied optimizer microphone collects and analyzes the sound your speakers produce in y our actual listening en vironment.
33 AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION English For best results, make sure th e room is as quiet as possible during the A UTO SETUP procedure (YP A O). If there is too much ambient noise, the results ma y not be satisfactory . y • Y ou can run A UTO SETUP using the system menu that app ears in the OSD or in the front panel display .
34 AUTO SETUP 4 Press k / n repeatedly to select WIRING, DIST ANCE, SIZE, EQ or LEVEL. 5 When WIRING, DIST ANCE, SIZE or LEVEL is selected, press l / h to select: CHECK T o automatically check and adjust the selected item. SKIP T o skip the selected it em and perform no adjustme nts.
35 AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION English • If you change speakers, speaker positions, or the layout of your listening en vironment, run A UTO SETUP again to re-calibrate your system. • In the DIST ANCE results, the distance displayed may be longer than the actual di stanc e depending on the characteristics of your subwo ofer .
PLAYBACK 36 Extreme caution should be exercised when you play back CDs encoded in D TS. If you play back a CD encoded in DTS on a D TS-incompatible CD player , you will only he a r some unwanted noise that may damage your speakers. Check whether your CD player suppor ts CDs encoded in DTS.
37 PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION English 6 Rotate V OLUME on the front panel (or press V OLUME +/– on the remote control) to adjust the v olume to the de sir ed output level. 7 Rotate the PR OGRAM se lector on the front panel (or press one of the sound field prog ram button s on the remote contro l) to select the desired sound field program.
38 PLAYBACK ■ Adjusting the tonal quality Use this feat ure to adjust the balance of bass and treble for the front L/R and cent er speaker channels. 1 Press T ONE CONTROL on the fr ont pane l repeatedly to select TREBLE or B ASS. 2 Rotate the PROGRAM sel ector to adjust the high-frequ ency respon se (TREBLE) or the low-frequency response (B ASS).

41 PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION English ■ Using PURE DIRECT PURE DIRECT bypasses the decoders and DSP processors of this unit as well as shuts down the video circuitry , allowing you to enjoy the highest possible sound fidelity from analog and PCM sources.
42 PLAYBACK ■ Using th e sleep ti mer Use this feature to automa tically set this unit in th e standby mode after a certain amount of time. The sleep timer is useful when you are goi ng to sleep while this unit is playing or recording a s ource. The sleep timer also automatically turns of f any e xternal components connected to the A C OUTLETS.

RECORDING 45 BAS I C OPERA TION English Recording adjustments a nd other operations are performed from the recording components. Refer to the operation instructions for those components. 1 T urn on the po wer of this unit and all connected components.
FM/AM TUNING 46 Automatic tuning is ef fectiv e when station signals are strong and there is no interference. 1 Rotate the INPU T selector on the fro nt panel (or set AMP/SOURCE/TV to SOURCE and then press TUNER on th e remote control) to select TUNER as the input source.
47 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION English Manual tuning is effective when stations signa ls are weak . Manually tuning into an FM station will automatic ally change the reception mode to monaural reception to increase the signal quality. 1 Repeat st eps 1 and 2 in “A utomatic tuning” to select TUNER and the reception band.
48 FM/AM TUNING 3 Press and hold MEMOR Y (MAN’L/A UTO FM) on the front panel for more than 3 seconds. The preset group and number as well as the MEMOR Y and A UTO indicators flash. After approximately 5 seconds, au tomatic presetting starts from the currently selected frequency and p roceeds to ward the higher freq uencies.
49 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION English Y ou can also store up to 40 FM or AM stations (8 stations in each of the 5 groups, A1 to E8) man ually . Y ou must first set AMP/SOURCE/TV to SOURCE and then press TUNER on the remote control to select TU NER as the input source.
50 FM/AM TUNING 5 Press MEMOR Y (MAN’L/AUT O FM) on the front panel while the M EMOR Y indicator is flashing. The station band and frequenc y appear in the front panel display with the preset group and nu mber you hav e selected. 6 Repeat step s 1 to 5 to store other stations.
51 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION English 3 Press PRESET/TUNING l / h (or PRESET k / n on the remot e contro l) to select a preset station number (1 through 8). The preset group and number appear in the front panel display along with th e station band, frequency and the TUNED indicator lights up.
52 FM/AM TUNING Radio Data System is a data transmission sy stem used by FM stations in many cou ntries. The Radio Data System function is carried out am ong the network stations.
53 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION English If you select the desired program type, this unit automatically searc hes all preset Ra dio Data System stations that are broadcasting a program of the required type. 1 Set AMP/SOURCE/TV to SOURCE and then press TUNER on the remote control to select TUNER as the input source.

T o control these other components, you must set up the remote cont rol with the appropriate remote control code s.
86 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES Once you set the appropriate remote control codes, you can use this remote to cont rol your other components. Note that some butt ons ma y not correctly operate the selected component. Use the input selector buttons to select the component you want to operate.
