Rack Mounting The XG 850 W a tt power supply is designed to fill h alf of a standard 19 inch (483 mm) equipment rack. Units can be combined with the sam e models in the 850 W series for customer applications.

Installation 2-10 M370078-01 Step 6: Connecting Loads This section describes how to connect loads to the power supply for both single and multiple loads. DC Output Connectors 6 V–40 V Models The 6 V–40 V models are equipped with output terminals, as shown in Figure 1-3 .
Step 6: Connecting Loads M370078-01 2-11 2 Inductive Loads and Batteries Selecting Diodes The diode must have a voltage rating at least 20% greater t han the power supply's output voltage and have a cu rrent rating greater than or equal to the power supply's output rating.
Installation 2-12 M370078-01 Connecting Single Loads Figure 2-3 shows the recommended load connections for a single load which is sensing its voltage loca lly . Loc al sense lines shown are the default connections at the rear panel APG J1 connector (see Figure 4-1 on page 4–5 ).
Step 7: Connecting Remote Sensing M370078-01 2-13 2 Step 7: Connecting Remote Sensing Remote sensing permits you to shif t the regulatio n point of the power supply from the output terminals to the load or other distribution terminals. Use shielded twisted pair wiring of 20 to 26 A WG for best noise performance.
Installation 2-14 M370078-01 3. Connect one end of the shield of th e twisted pair wire to the chassis ground poi nt on the power supp ly . 4. Connect the positive sense line (+SNS) from the positive regulation point as close as possible to th e load terminals to pin J1.

T o turn the power supply on, see “Powering the Power Supply On/Of f” on page 2–8 .

See “Setting VOL TS and AMPS Modes” . The general procedur e for setting up the features in the select and set model is: 1.

If the set point is blinking, the un it is in coarse tracking mode. • When the VOL TS mode is selected, the voltage set point will blink in the output voltage display .

Standard Operation M370078-01 3-11 3 Standard Oper ation The power supp ly can be contro lled by two methods, either from the front panel or from any of the remote interfaces. Front panel control is referred to as local operation (default setting) while control via any of the remote interfaces is called remo te operation.
Local Operation 3-12 M370078-01 Constant V oltage Mode Operation If the output is enabled and the conf igured current set poi nt is much higher than the requirements for the attached load, then the voltage will rise until it reaches the voltage set poin t.

T urn the 9-position mode control to the VOL TS position or press the rotary Adjust/Enter cont rol if the 9-position mo de control is already at the VOL TS position. W ith Auxiliary Auto Star t mode turned to On, the auxiliary output will be activated after the power supply is powered up again.

Some conditions are: • From user configurable features. • Controlled in hardware and will tr igger regardless of configuration. All alarms, with the exception of the Fan alarm, will result in the output of the power supp ly being disab led.
Alarms and Errors M370078-01 3-19 3 Clearing Alarms Clearing T riggered and Manual Alarms T o clear a triggered alarm, u se one of the following methods: • T urn the power supply Off and then On. • Press and hold the rotary Adju st/Enter control for 3 seconds.
Local Operation 3-20 M370078-01 Clearing Automatic Alarms Some alarms will clear automatically when the condition that caused the alarm is no longer present. When an alarm automatically clears, the output voltage and current dis plays w ill return to normal, but the ALARM LED will remain illuminated to indicat e that an alarm has occurred.
Alarms and Errors M370078-01 3-21 3 Alarm Masking It is possible to completely disable some alarms through the use of the alarm mask. If an alarm is masked th en this masking will prevent it from registering in the SCPI conditions regi sters as well as not triggering the alarm.
Local Operation 3-22 M370078-01 Alarm Output Latching When an alarm is triggere d, the output will be disabled with the exception of the Fan alarm. When an alarm is cleared, the alarm output latch determines if the output should be re-e nabled to the state before the alarm occurred or if the output shou ld remain in the off state.

Using Over V oltage Protection (O VP) M370078-01 3-25 3 Using Over V oltage Pr otection (O VP) The OVP circui t protects the load in the event of an analog p rogramming error , an incorrect voltage control ad justment, or a power supply failure.
Local Operation 3-26 M370078-01 Defining the OVP Set P oint T o define the OVP set point: 1. T urn the power supply On. Ensure the voltage is lower than the desired set point. 2. Set the output to the desired voltage. OVP can be set without setting desired output voltage first.
Using Under V oltage Protection (UVP) M370078-01 3-27 3 Using Under V oltage Pr otection (UVP) The UVP prevents voltage settings be low a set value. The UVP lets you create a voltage window of op eration when used in co nj unction with the OVP setting.

Using Over T e mperature Protection Lock (O TP) M370078-01 3-29 3 Using Over T emperatur e Protection Lock (O TP) The OTP lock protects the power su pply in the event of an over temperature alarm. This alarm could be caused by ven tilation restri ction or overheating due to fan failure.
Local Operation 3-30 M370078-01 Using the External Shutdown Function Use the external shutdown function to enable or disable the output of the power supply via a logic level signal . When the external shutdown is triggered, the power supply will display SD POL on the output voltag e and current displays and the ALARM LED will illuminate.

Hardware Malfunction Alarms M370078-01 3-33 3 P ower On Status Signal Power On S tatus signal indicate s a fault condition in t he power supply . Power On Status signal is a TTL output signal at Pin J2.13 with reference to COM_ISOLA TED (Pin J2.2 or Pin J2.
Local Operation 3-34 M370078-01 Current Configur ation Memory Settings The power supply will save the unit se ttings at the time of power down. These settings will be loaded when the power is restored to the unit or the power supply is powered up again.
User Setting Memory Locations M370078-01 3-35 3 User Setting Memory Locations There are three user setting memory locations available for storing frequently used configurations.

Local Lock out M370078-01 3-37 3 Local Lockout Local lockout is a feature that allows the front panel to be locked so that accidental button presses are ignored. This feature is often used to lockout the front panel when yo u are controll ing the power supp ly from a remote location.

Resetting the P ower Supply M370078-01 3-39 3 Resetting the P ower Supply The reset is used to clear the parame ters to the factor y default values. Soft Reset The soft reset is used to set the para meters (see T able 3-9) to the default values, but it does not reset the calibration constants T o perform a soft reset: 1.
Local Operation 3-40 M370078-01 Hard Reset The hard reset performs the same func tions as a soft reset, but will also clear all calibration constants. Do no t perform a hard reset unless you are planning to re-cal ibrate all settings of your p ower supply .
Using Multiple P ower Supplies M370078-01 3-41 3 Using Multiple P ower Supplies Y ou can operate power supplies of the same model with the outputs in series to obtain increased load voltage or with th e outputs in parallel to obtain increased current , also called current sharing.

Using Multiple P ower Supplies M370078-01 3-43 3 Configuring Multiple Supplie s for Series Operation A maximum of two power supplies of the same rating can be connected in series to increase the output voltage.
Local Operation 3-44 M370078-01 Connecting to the Load in Remote Sensing Mode Connect the negative (–) output term inal of one power supply to the positive (+) output terminal of the next power supply . The more positive supply’ s positive sense line should connect to the positive terminal of the load (or distribution point).
Using Multiple P ower Supplies M370078-01 3-45 3 Configuring Multiple Supplies for Curr ent Sharing Operation (APG Method) Up to four power supplies can be co nnected in parallel to increase the output current. One of the units wi ll operate as the master unit and the remaining units will operate as slave un its controlled by the master unit .
Local Operation 3-46 M370078-01 Setting Over V oltage Protection (O VP) The master unit’ s OVP should be programmed to the desired OVP level. The OVP of the slave units should be programmed to a higher va lue than the master OVP . When the master unit shuts down, it will program the outputs of the slave units to zero vo lts.

Introduction M370078-01 4-3 4 Remote Programming Options Analog Monitor Signals There are four monitor lines for an alog programming the pin name and the related APG mode, which are listed in T able 4-1 . All of these lines are provided to give analog feedback.
