Chapter 1 Intr oduction Bar coding is the most common A utomated Data Collection (ADC) technology pro viding timely , error-free information that can be used to increase productivity , accuracy , and efficiency in the workplace. Vir tually e very type of industr y is using bar codes to replace ke yboard data entr y .
2 Bar codes are symbols consisting of a series of bars and spaces which can be applied to packages , car tons, bottles, and other commercial products . The bars and spaces in each symbol are grouped in such a wa y to represent a specific ASCII character or function.

4 Y our W asp WLR 8900/8905 Scanners are ready f or use. The default settings of the scanners hav e been pre-programmed f or the most common bar code configurations. Use the “WLR 8900/8905 Setup & Configuration” sections only to customize the scanners settings .
5 In order to configure W asp WLR 8900/8905 Scanners, y ou must f amiliar iz e yourself with the setup procedures on the f ollowing pages . The def ault settings of the W asp WLR 8900/8905 Scanners are identified on each page and clearly mar ked using an asterisk (*).

7 Chapter 5 Beep and Dela y The 'Beep and Dela y' configuration suppor ts the general control options f or the W asp WLR 8900/8905 Scanners . These options include the volume , intercharacter dela y , and interb lock dela y . Interbloc k delay is the minim um time inter v al between two adjacent scans.

11 Chapter 5 Preamble/P ostamble Configuration The ‘Preamble/P ostamble’ configuration is used to add a prefix or suffix set of characters to the bar code v alue. Up to 8 characters ma y be added f or each option separately . Preamble and postamb le characters can function concurrently , b ut need to be configured separately .

Code 93 encodes the full 128 ASCII character set using 9 modules arr anged into 3 bars with adjacent spaces. T wo of the characters are chec k characters.
17 Chapter 5 Code 128 and UCC/EAN 128 Settings Code 128 is the most fle xible of all the common linear symbologies. It suppor ts alpha and numeric characters easily , has the highest number of characters per inch, and is variab le length. See page 5 f or information on setting the minimum and maximum lengths.
18 Chapter 5 MSI Plessey Settings *Def ault MSI Plessey is a v ariable length numeric symbology and is primar ily used in marking retail shelves . Each character consists of f our bars with inter v ening spaces for each encoded digit, one or two symbol chec k digits, and a re verse star t code .
19 Codabar is a v ar iab le length symbology capable of encoding six special alphanumeric characters, capital letters A through D , T , N, *, E, and all numer ic digits . Codabar is one of the oldest bar code symbologies and is still used in some library applications.
20 Chapter 5 UPC-A Settings UPC-A (Universal Product Code-A) is fix ed length and is the most common UPC bar code f or retail product labeling. It is seen in most grocery stores across the United States. The symbology encodes a 12-digit number . The first six digits are assigned from the Uniform Code Council (UCC).
21 This option enables the tw o and five digit supplements f or the UPC and EAN/JAN bar code symbologies.
