11. Unplug the Miniprint 425 from the wall outlet and ref er ser vicing to qualified ser vice per sonnel under the f ollowing conditions: a. When the pow er supply cord or plug is damag ed or fra yed. b. If liquid has been spilled into the Miniprint 425.
INTR ODUCTION W elcome to the Miniprint 425 ™ TTY from Ultratec.Y ou can either connect the Miniprint 425 directly to the telephone line or place any standar d telephone handset in the acoustic cups. When you use dir ect connect, you can dial directl y from the keyboard.
Special k e ys Escape k ey quits whatever y ou are doing and sav es chang es. Contr ol ke y gives instructions to the Miniprint 425 when you hold it do wn and press a function key . Function k eys give commands to the Miniprint 425 when you hold down the key .
All you need to do to set up the Miniprint 425 is plug it in! Y ou must plug in the A C adapter for 24 hours to charg e the batteries. The r ing f lasher will not w ork properl y until the batteries are fully c harged.
Plugging in po wer and the telephone line Be sure to pull the plastic tab out of the batter y compar tment on the bottom of the Miniprint 425 before y ou plug in the A C adapter . 8 • SETUP The picture abov e shows how to set up f or direct connect use.
Char ging the batteries The A C adapter supplies electr icity to the Minipr int 425 and charg es the built-in batter ies. Leaving the A C adapter plugg ed in will not harm the Minipr int 425 or the batter ies. The fir st time you set up y our Miniprint 425, leave the A C adapter plugg ed in for 24 hours to charg e the batteries.
About Auto ID ™ The A uto ID™ featur e aler ts a hearing per son that you are calling from a TTY . It aler ts the per son by sending several audible tones ov er the telephone line ever y f ew seconds. A uto ID helps emerg ency ser vice center s such as 911 automatically detect that y ou are calling by TTY .
Setting the print case The Miniprint 425 pr ints ever ything you type in low ercase (small) letter s and ever ything the other person types in uppercase (CAPIT AL) letters. Y ou can also set the Minipr int 425 so that ever ything is printed in uppercase letter s.

This chapter e xplains how to make and answ er calls in direct connect and with the acoustic cups. It also descr ibes T urbo Code and the f ollowing advanced calling f eatures: • Interrupt. This featur e allows you to interr upt the other per son while he or she is typing.
Making a call in dir ect connect 14 • CALLING 1. T ur n on the Minipr int 425. 2. Press the dial key (hold down the key and press the key . ) 3. T ype the telephone number you ar e calling (use the key to cor rect mistakes). Press the key to dial the number .
Signal light and displa y The signal light and display sho w what is happening on the telephone line in the f ollowing wa ys: • Signal light steadily on : dial tone. • Signal light flashing slo wly or RINGING on display: telephone ringing. • Signal light flashing quickly or BUSY on display: telephone busy .

Acoustic calling and ans wering CALLING • 17 1. Put the telephone handset in the acoustic cups on the Miniprint 425. Make sure the telephone cord is on the left side. 2. T ur n on the Minipr int 425. If you ar e answ er ing a call, type a greeting. If you ar e making a call, go on to Step 3.
About T urbo Code ® T urbo Code is an enhanced ver sion of Baudot Code. It sends signals to other T urbo Code TTYs as fast as y ou can type. The Miniprint 425 takes care of connecting in T urbo Code or Baudot code, depending on which code the other TTY is using.
INTERR UPT . The other per son can choose to stop typing and let you g o ahead or ignore y our inter r uption and continue. If you see INTERR UPT on your displa y while you are typing, it means that the other per son wants to interr upt you and start typing.
1. Hold down the and ke ys and press the key ( + + ) to put the call on hold. Leave the Miniprint 425 turned on. 2. Go to another TTY connected to the same telephone line (either direct connect or acoustic), tur n it on and type 3 periods. This tells the Minipr int 425 to hang up.
T ransferring a call Office telephone systems var y widely and specifics of how to transf er a call will be different f or each system. Most telephone systems require a hook f lash to transfer a call. On the Miniprint 425, typing an ! when you are dialing sends a hook f lash.

Use auto-ans wer when you w ant the Minipr int 425 to automatically ans wer TTY calls and take messages. One way to use auto-ans wer is to turn it on when you are w orking around y our home or of fice to make sure you do not miss calls. Y ou must be using direct connect to turn on auto- ans wer .
T ur ning on auto-ans wer 24 • AUT O-ANSWER Press the auto-ans wer key (hold down the key and press the key). 4 Ctrl T ur ning off auto-ans wer T o turn of f auto-answ er , press the ke y or tur n off the Miniprint 425.
This chapter describes all of the settings you can c hang e with the options key . The y are listed in the order they appear on the display when y ou press the options key ( + ) and then the ke y . Use the to show the different settings f or each option.
Setting pulse/tone dialing The Miniprint 425 is set for tone dialing, which is correct fo r almost all telephone lines. But you can chang e to pulse dialing if your line does not accept tone dialing.This setting remains c hanged until y ou chang e it a gain or reset the Miniprint 425 or you lose pow er .
2. Press the key until you see TURBO CODE ( ON) on the display . 3. Press the to chang e the setting to OFF . 4. Press the key to save the new setting and leav e options or press the key to save and go to the ne xt option. T ur ning off Auto ID Follo w these steps to tur n of f A uto ID: 1.
Setting the Baudot code baud rate Each time y ou tur n on the Miniprint 425, the Baudot code baud rate is set to the auto setting.The auto setting uses whatever code it needs to ans wer a call. If you need to specify the code that the Miniprint 425 uses, you can set the unit so that it will only use either 45.
Ordinar y care of your Miniprint 425 requir es changing the printer paper when it r uns out and replacing the batteries when they no longer hold a full c harge.
Replacing the printer paper The printer uses high-quality ther mal paper . Use the order card that comes with the Miniprint 425 to order paper . If you do not have a car d, contact your dealer or Ultratec (the Ultratec address is on the inside fr ont cover of this manual).
About the batteries The Miniprint 425 r uns on batter ies when you unplug the A C adapter or when the pow er fails. Fully charg ed, the 6 AA rec hargeable NiCad batteries will provide 45 to 60 minutes of normal use. When the pow er light blinks, you hav e about 5 minutes of batter y power left.
Replacing the batteries Replace the batteries ever y two or three y ear s, or when they alwa ys r un down in less than 30 minutes and e x ercising them does not help. T o chang e batter ies, tur n ov er the Minipr int 425 and f ollow these steps: 32 • CARE & REP AIR T ake off the batter y cover by pushing in on the latch and lifting up.
T r oub leshooting Dir ect connect Dialing does not work. Make sure y ou have the right tone/pulse setting for y our telephone system. The display says NO DIRECT CONNECT . The Miniprint 425 is not properly connected to the telephone line. Be sure the cord is firmly plugg ed into the Miniprint 425 and the telephone wall jack.
Printer The printer does not work. Be sure the printer is on. Y ou can also tr y resetting the printer by tur ning the Miniprint 425 of f and on. The printer works, but it prints too lightly or not at all. Make sure y ou have high-gr ade ther mal printer paper and it is correctly installed.
Resetting the Miniprint 425 Resetting the Miniprint 425 retur ns all options to their orig inal settings. Follow these steps to reset the Miniprint 425: 1. Press the left key , the r ight ke y , and the ke y all at the same time. The display will giv e a version number and say RESET Y/N .
STICKY KEY S Ordinarily , when you use the or ke ys, you must hold down either key while you press another key . If you hav e trouble pr essing two keys at once, the sticky keys featur e lets you use the and keys b y pressing one key at a time. T o turn on sticky keys, press either key five times.

Con v ersation Etiquette GA When you talk with another person by TTY , you type while the other per son reads. When you want the other person to respond, type GA f or “Go ahead. ” GA OR SK T o sa y goodbye, type GA OR SK. This gives the other per son a chance to sa y any last wor ds bef ore ending the conversation.
